The state potato crop prospects suffered a big drop from last month's forecast, and the estimates and forecasts for oats, corn, barley and apples show moder ate declines, while the hay crop esti mate exceeds the September forecast, and flax held about even. A big bean worth close to a million dollars crop has been produced, but has been greatly damaged since harvest by heavy* rains. The total production of alfalfa seed is only about 68 percent of the 1922 production. These are the important features of the October Crop Report issued today by the Mon tana Co-operative Crop Reporting Sendee. SPRING WHEAT A production of 40,695,000 bushels of spring wheat is estimated from an average yield per acre of 15 bushels. Last year there was 39,881,000 bushels and an average yield of 14.7 bushels. The average crop for the 5-year per iod 1918-22 has been 26,034,000 bush els, and the ten-year average yield 14.3 bushels per j Quality is j placed at 90 per cent, compared to 95 j per cent last year, and to 90, the rust I in the eastern sections, and threshing j Ktem. »CT» wry Æaf p.inüng there îf&aWïïT Further 11 west! X TÄTKÄ w last 1 to further lower quality. Of the spring ; wheat, 135,000 acres are of Durum 1 varieties, with an average estimated : yield of 11 bushels per acre, and a | production of 1,485,000 bushels. i ALL WHEYT The preliminary estimated produc- 1 tion of winter wheat was 6,239,000 j bushels, and this added to the spring w heat, gives a total estimated wheat j production of 46,934,000 bushels for j 1923. The preliminary revised esti- ; mate for 1922 is 46,250,000 bushels, and the 5-year average (1910-22) pro-j duction" has been 31,501,000 bushels. J acre. OATS The preliminary estimate for oats j for this year is 20,808,000 bushels, i compared to 19,200,000 bushels for j last year, and to 18,346,000 bushels, the average« for the 10-year period, The average yield per acre is placed at 34 bushels, compard to 32 bushels for last year, and to the 10-year aver age made a very good crop this year, though injured by hoppers, and by dry hot weather in eastern counties. BARLEY With an average yield of 25 bushels per acre, a production of 2,050,000 bushels is estimated. The average yield last year was the same as this, and the production 1,925,000 bushels, while the average for the 10-year per iod has been 24.1 bushels and 1,717, 000 bushels, respectively. FLAX A production of 1,305,000 bushels is forecasted from a condition of 85 on October 1. The condition a year ago was 70, and the 10-year average 59, 889,000 bushels, The 1922 crop w as and the 1917-21 average crop has been 1 096,000 bushels. Flax has turned out well in most of the eastern dis tricts, with some excellent yields re ported. Hoppers did considerable damage to the crop in September, chiefly in the north-central district. CORN With a rating of 90, the corn fore cost is 8,820,000 bushels, compared to 5.475,000 bushels last year, and to 2, 827,000 bushels, the average for the 5-year period 1918-22. The condition last month was 92, the same as a year ago, while the 10-year average on the first of October has been 76. The de cline in condition was due to a little of the corn being frosted before ma turity, and to over rapid maturing of some* fields in the eastern counties during September., On the whole, com matured well, and the crop stands out as a bright light in the season's farming operations. POTATOES A condition figure of 78, a drop of eight points from the September rat ing, forecasts a production of 4,618, 000 bushels. The estimate for last year's crop was 5,796,000 bushels, and for the 10-year average 4,449,000 bushels. The condition last year on October 1 was 87, and for the 10-year period 75. Potatoes matured uneven ly', and conditions have not been fav orable through the season for devel oping a heavy yield. Early returns from digging show unsatisfactory crops in several commercial sections. BEANS The tentative estimate of the bean acreage this year is 23,000 acres, and the average yield on dry and irirgated giving an estimated production of land combined placed at 15 bushels, about 346,000 bushels. Practically all are of the Great Northern variety. A series of »Vie&vy retins which started in the latter part of September, just when the beans were practically all harvested, but few threshed, has caused very heavy losses to the crop, and advance reports indicate that the smaller part of the crop will be mar ketable. GÉNÉRAL CROP NOTES Rains have been general over the state, and especially heavy in all the southeast quarter of the state. ^ Har vesting of crops, threshing, and mar keting have been delayed, and great ijHinfr fr * i* * 4» ♦ * * ■> * >t » <' i' ' î < » I < * ❖>!« * Montana Inn t 1 i O O When in Plentywood over night be sure to register at the Montana Inn along Tanner & Best's Store.
