Let their ideas and their styles of writing soak into your mind and your soul, and let them lie there and hurt you, torture you, with their beauty. For every two or three hundred poems that you read, try to write one, always being sure to choose a subject which you can treat with feeling and the deepest sincerity, Without sincerity, passion and sweep impossible, and without those things you cannot write poetry, tho >ou may produce excellent doggerel, After an infinite amount of effort of this sort, you may hope to write some thing worth while. The greatest mar yels have often ere this developed from the humblest beginnings. But you must always remember, Mr. Bird, that life, for a poet, is not by any means a bed of roses. But when you begin to de ve I°P into an authentic poet, you will find your supporters growing fewer. Th e average person cannot under stand a poet, an ^ what he cannot un Verstand he condemns.
