During the after noon Queen Lavinia informed Brother Dempsey, the Lord High Chamber lain, that she had to go to Jersey to attend to some mortgages. Market yustorday Irregular, Nar row nnd Weak Washington Ad vices Caused Ifeallzing. New York, Feb. 11.- Further advances in wheat and cotton were gratifying developments in the situation today, and a large number of railway tralllc returns, covering various periods, were encouraging showings as a rule. The statement made bi' the Union Pacific Company was particularly noteworthy, showing increases both In the net and gross returns. The weekly bank statement was pub lished today and showed a further large increase in loans and a decrease in surplus reserves. Cash holdings de crease f 1, 120,000, a rcllectlon of the cov ering into the treasury or the Union Pacific payments, and in consequence or an increase in deposits of $4,856,000 surplus reserves decreased ?2,3-i4,000. The banks now bold $32,437,0ri0 above the lawful requiretucriP!. Today's stock market was irregular. A buoyant opening was succcje"dqd action and the markfct subsequently by a general re- strength and possible at any of the market varied rapidly befcweei weakness. It va not time to assign definite reasons for the course of prices. The early strength was largely due UJUhe renewed heavy purchases of stocks b foreign banking houses, which attained an unusually large total, but simultaneously with this buying and subsequently out weighing it was rthe extensive selling by local houses, particularly those with direct Washington connections and hence credited with exclusive Informa tion upon the diplomatic situation. The press dispatches contained nothing of an alarming nature bearing on the situ ation but the character of the selling noted led traders lx infer that addi tional surprises in relation thereto might be expected. The double holiday ahead has the natural tendency to restrict trading and in the afternoon there was a mark ed decrease in activity. Trade was large in the grangers, with Burlington in the lead, Louisville and Nashville was also active. These stocks followed the general course indicated. The mar ket closed easy. Dun's weekly review of trade will say today: "Business is pushing toward spring activity rather eai;ly. Events which have controlled are good buying of iron by the largest makers, the rise in cotton with strength in goods, the great railway consolidation, and the Cuban insurrection. The latter, with its possi- ointies, operates as a brake on specula tion, nnd foolishness of local traders gave foreigners a much-desired oppor tunity to buy stocks on balance about 45,000 shares. Thus, with consolidation of Central and Lake Shore and others expected, and with the largest earn ings ever known in January to life prices, sl.-aky speculators sold, and prices were Irregular, nevertheless ad vancing on the average 1.10 for rails and 32 cents per share for trusts. Jan uary earnings $3S,017,417 already report ed, are 10.G per cent better than last year. The great consolidations in prog. ress or in prospect mean far-reaching changes in railway management to which Investors are not blind. The de cision as to Kansas Pacific also has importance. The output of pig iron on February 1 was 229,82,1 tons weeklv, the largest In the history of the business, but the reported buying of 130.000 tons Bessemer iron by the Carnegie Com pany and 100,000 by another of the largest steel concerns nevertheless means decision by the ablest manufac turers that the unprecedented output of pig iron will soon prove too small for the growing demand for finished prod ucts. Kail contracts already cover, it is said, more than last year's produc tion, tile railways buying earlier than usual. The expected wire association causes some increase in purchases." ddd Cutting Still Deeper Into Shoes Prices Our "Midwinter Closing-out Sale" has b2cn the most successful jSaJe we ever held" but the stock on hand waFso eno'rmousfy large that ve still have a great many more Shoes en hand" than tvc should have. The unfa vorable features of the week are the slowness of spring trade In dry goods to develop at New York and other Eastern centers, except Boston. There was weakness, irregularity and slowness all day after a little time at the opening, and the result of the day's business was a drop of nearly a full point all around. There is too much that may happen between now and the opening on Monday to allow if any reasonable estimate of the tone of the market next -week. The situation at the present time Is all in favor of further weakness and reactions. It was noticeable that the houses with Washington connections were the heaviest sellers, and it is probable that there was much manufactured "news" sent out from her6 on the Cuban situa tion to make temporary profits on the short side. Such manipulation is un fortunate. There is likely to be enough real news before man days. The earnings statements yesterday were the best features of the situation. There were a large batch of them and they were almost uniformly good. Cana dian Pacific earnings for the first week of February increased $53,000. Texas Pacific for the same period $20,000. Nor folk and Western decreased $866. Ches apeake and Ohio increased $5,800. Union Pacific for the month of December showed a net increase of $270,000. The Nickel Plate reports for the quarter ending December 31 a surplus of $190,000 against $129,000 last year. Manhattan earned in the December 31 quarter $509,000. The strength de veloped in yesterday's market was re newed today, the .May sellins up to 9S&c, closing at 974. Outside markets were all higher, Liverpool showing an improvement of ?a to Id., and Paris 15 to 25 centimes. The stimulating feature for the day was the probability of the shipment mentioned yesterday of a large portion of the cash wheat held by the Leiter interests. If the short interest in May is as large as estimated shipments of any consid erable amount of wheat now in store would give quite a bulge in prices of options. The strength in wheat and prospect of light receipts encouraged liberal buy ing of corn nearly 2,000,000 bushels hav ing been taken by local traders this morning. A further advance in wheat is of course in favor of better prices for corn. Capita! Loan Guarantee Go 602 F Street H. W. 5Cevr York Cotton Market.
