SCABCITY OF IPECAC.

Children, or most of them, will be pleases
to hear that there Is a scarcity of Ipacat.
This emetic is one of the sovereign reme
dies for children. The Jllo variety is well
known to the drug trade of ths United
States, while the importation of the Car
thagena vartety Is prohibited by the cus
toms authorities of Brazil. But the in
creasing scarcity of the Rio variety has
directed attention to the Carthagena or
New Granada root which, in appearance,
does not materially differ from the Brazil
ian root, excepting that the rings which
characterize ipecac are less conspicuous.
It is in its physiological effects that the
Carthagena ipecac is supposed to differ.
from the Brazilian variety, the former con- 1

Ipecacuanha is a low, creeping, peren
nial plant, growing wild In Brazil, having
a faint, peculiar odor and a bitter, tuba
crid. nauseous taste, the root of which is
small and wrinkled, being marked by regu- i

lection of rubber In Brazil has assumed
such proportions, those who formerly oc
cupied themselves with gathering aud pre
paring roots, for market have abandoned
the latter occupation for the former, which
Is more profitable and less laborious. The
result has ben to curtail greatly the sup
ply of Ipecacuanha; in fact, practically
none is gathered- The possibility of an
early scarcity of the drug was foreseen
by United States dealers, who have almost
a monopoly of the market- Prices have
been advancing steadily for ten years. In j
