In 111 health for over a car and death
came after an active life of eighty three
years The funeral will take place at the
New York Avenue Presbyterian Church
at 2 oclock Monday afternoon under the
auspices of the Grand Lodgcof the Dis
trict of Columbia The Rev Dr Wallace
Hadcliffe will officiate assisted by the
Rev William R Turner The funeral
exercises of the Knights Templar tjIH

Washington Commandcry No 1 of which
Mr Singleton was n member Pcntalpha
Lodge No 23 T A A M Mount Horeb
Chapter R A No 7 and Washington
Commander No I K T will act as an
escort for the body to Oak Hill cemetery

In the Interment
In addition to being one of the oldest
Masons in the District of Columbia Wil
liam It Singleton was conceded to possess
greater knowledge than any other man In
the grand lodge concerning all branches
and the history of Masonry For nearly
thirty years be acted as secretary of the
Grand Lodge of the District and was ac
tively Interested all bis life In the pro
gress and work of the order
He was born In Norfolk Va October
21 ISIS and received his education at
Mfddlebury Vt where he attended col
lege During his collego days he was In
timate with tho Rev Byron Sunderland
and their friendship continued during the
Ion j period both lived in this city After
leaving college Mr Singleton felt an In
clination for civil engineering and went
to St Louis where he followed his pro
fession and was engaged In making the

the Missouri Pacific Railroad Later he
became State Surveyor of Illinois He
always attributed the severe attacks of
rheumatism fiom which he suffered in
his declining jears to the effect of his
arduous labors in the lowlands of Illinois
bordering upon the Mississippi
In 1S4G he returned to the East and en
gaged again in his profession at the Nor
folk Navy Yard In 1S55 he was married
to Miss Emma Read William H Single
ton of this city Is one of the children
of this union His second marriage was
to Miss Mary B Frisby of Baltimore jnd
one child of this union Is still living Mrs
J B NBerry at whose home Mr Singleton
lived for many years and where he died
In the early fifties he supervised the en
gineering work of the construction of the
navy yard at Pensacola Fla Later he
removed to Baltimore and In the year
1S63 came to Washington and was cm
ployed In the engineering branch of the
War Department in which capacity he
had charge of the building of forts about
this city during the last jears of the civil
war
At the cessation of Iiobtllllies he was
transferred to tho Interior Department
and made an examiner of patents which
position he resigned in 1S73 when he en
tered business as n patent solicitor
Shortly before this time he was elected
Grand Secretary of the Grand Ixidge of
the District and retained an active inter
est In all affairs of the lodge as It grew
In strength and numbers during the
jears he acted In that capacity One
great servico that he rendered was the
completion of a work on Masonry which
had b en left unfinished by the death of
the late Albert Mackay
