NEW YORK April 11 The street has
watched -with unabated Interest the
course or the hlh priced railway stocks
BurllnBton Northwestern St Paul Rock
Island Delaware and Hudson and those
of secondary Importance like Union Pa
cific and Northern Pacific Some of these
stocks hae jumped up sensationally At
times adances of xnanv points hae been
scored off hand There hae been attend
ing rumors calore fables uncountable
eery manner of consolidation combina
tion nnd mjstcry being oerrorked
Slanlpulatlon has had free swine
Here and there occasionally possible
facts hae been recited or suggested but
In few cases has there been anj thing like
an approach to the truth to posslbilltj
much less probability Wall Street In
this particular at least stands apparent
1 hjpnotlzed listening to foolish tales
gambling upon the expectation of mira
cles making In estments upon a sheer
basis of ridiculousness
Of course this sort of thing must end
as alnnjs It does end with disappoint
ment penalties and distresses for those
who are rash and for those who too much
confide But It Is bold skepticism that
dures Just now to intrude upon fashion
able enthusiasm for the man who doesnt
expect Burlington St Paul and Rock Isl
und to so soaring to 250 and higher is a
man wl o In Wall Street now needs maify
and many n defence Just a little figur
ing Just a little scrutiny of official re
ports might change this popular furor
but who would igure who cares for cer
tified statistics or official reports while
we have the manipulation melody of deals
deals deals
This is bad for it is dangerous threat
ening sequels that can be widely disturb
ing It is a common sense doctrine and
none other can hae common sene in it
that securities are worth what their jield
makes them w orth deals work -no
miracles The present market has reach
ed that tolnt where it Is wise for bujers
to be ery carefullj discriminating Some
securities should jet be considered good
purchases on the small reactions Others
are already too high
The money market outlook Is a trifle
better than it was a few dajs ago The
bank statement was a fine one The talk
of exports of gold Is abating and some
of the big bankers now say that exports
are imnrobable
It Is impossible to say if another sharp
break like that of lat Monday will occur
tomorrow or early in tne weeK Dut me

In the Iron and Bteel trade most inter
est centre The new United States fattel
Corporation commands so much atten
tion that Investors and speculators alike
arc exceptionally watchful or what de
velops in metal market conditions and
observation finds two notable things
one that better prices are commanded
for practically every article of manufac
ture and the other that advanced mar
ket prices follow disclosures of reduced
supplies Available stocks of Iron ind
Bteel and other metal commodities are
much diminished as compared with even
recent inventories This results from the
extraordinary situation of last jear
when of a sudden almost every consumer
Ehut down on orders expecting In a little
while to be able to command accommo
dation at substantial reduction Fur
naces mills foundries slackened pace
product was enormously diminished aid
coincldentally consumption was abnor
mally checked Industry balked to force
on iron trade reaction and when the re
action cme a bigger reaction was de
mandedwith the result seldom escaped
In speculative history that they who
were arbitrary overdid their aggressive
ness overstaid their market and now
the sequel s disclosed an iron and steel
market practically denuded From the
trade standpoint the status is healthful
Tills phase of conditions technical and
tradlsh to whatever extent has to do
with the situation and the prospects of
the new United States Steel Corporation
with which Wall Stret now has acutely
live relations the enterprise that breaks
even record hitherto known In the con
sequence of Its capitalization but not so
much a record breaker In that particular
as In the overwhelming importance of its
icope and anticipated accomplishment
The securities of the new corporation
are to be listed on every bourse In Eu
lope carl next month they will have
quotation on the London Stock Exchange
and later Berlin Amsterdam and Glas
gow will trade In them dally Sjch an
International market must contribute to
market value though not market quota
tions but actual returns to Investors are
what will be most closely scrutinized and
with direct bearing uoon this essential Is
the determined plar of the corporation to
Issue a detailed specific explicit state
ment of assets and earning capacity This
statement will certlf phenomenal condi
tions phenomenal manufacturing results
succinctly stated the exhibit will show
Interest earned upon every liability 7 per
cent provided for preferred stock capital
and 10 per cent as a minimum applicable
to the corporations common stock
There has been no delay in the gradual
working out of plans for the consolida

to have been a temporary lull In the
march of market Quotations for
Amalgamated Copper which will be used

as the nucleus around which will be gath
ered the smaller concerns One of the
mobt Important developments recently
has been the abandonment of F A Helnze
by Senntor W A Clark in the suits of
the former against the Amalgamated Cop

that Senator Clark has cabled Instruc
tions from Europe to his attornejs at
Uutte Jlon to begin proceedings at once
In the courts to withdraw his name and
those of his son and the Clark Bank from
all of llr Helnze s mining suit bonds
aggregating about l2o00nu in sureties Al
rrailj the United Metnls Selling Company
which is owned by Amalgamated Copper
Interests has begun to act as sales agent
for Senator Clark s Montana mines nnd
it Is generally understood In the tride
that the United Verde will be Included In

ridiculous it Is merely a revival of an

It Is not unreasonable to expect however
that extensive plans regarding tenancy

Commenting upon the narrow policy of
many of the American bankers in loaning
to the limit of their reserves when stocks
are booming and suddenly contracting
their accommodations on the first sign
of trouble C Schumacher Co In their
weekly Exchange Review say The
Government evidently does not consider
it good policy to give anj assistance to
the present crazy boom In our stock
market This pollcj is undoubtedlj cor
rect and should be followed by everj
ban In the country Iz in time of
boom make advances asd hus
band their funds and their resources to
be used liberally in the hour of need to
prevent a general catastrophe such as
might occur when the boom collapses
we have had many such in this country
before which were aggravated beyond
measure in every instance by the foolish
actions of banks who exhausted their
funds to help a boom to a point bejond
the limit of and then called In
every loan at the first sign of danger
The exact opposite should be their
policy

say the matter Is in the hands of the

The recent deaths of the notorious
Charles Toulke and James McCarthy
train wreckers and safe blowers after
an accident at the Midland Junc

belief of railroad officials that an
organized gang of desperate men
is in tne vicinity intent on wrecking a
train or robbing an express car The
attempt Saturday morning failed because
of lacK of knowledge by the thieves of
the arrangement of the train
Three unidentified men boarded tho ex
