t i I , t - f r ;- '-. : ' l .go, -A 5 W:" ; I 4 i ' ! : - !! i 4.. i : .r f V f; 1 - ' ' i ' : ! i. I . !; A California Story. . In the northern part of this State (Cal- Ifornia) is a stream called iuoa ivier. Across it. some enterprising individual built a bruise : and on the bank somebody else built three or iour nouses. iut m habitauts called the place Yuba 'Dam. Three bars were instantly erected, and the "town" increased rapidly. About noon one cool day a traveler and sojourner in the land passed th"i3 flourishing locality, and seeing a long-legged specimen of hu manity in a red shirt smoking before one of the bars, thus addressed him : "Hello!" "Ilello I" replied the shirt, with vigor, removing his pipe from his mouth. . "What place is this?" demanded the traveler, whose name was Thompson. The answer of the shirt was unexpected : ' : "Yuba Dam!" There was about fifty yards between them, and the wind was blowing. Mr. Thompson thought he had been mistaken. "What did you say?" he asked. "Yuba Dam," replied the stranger, cheerfully. "What place is this?" roared Mr. Thompson. "Yu ba Dam !" said the' shirt, in a elightly elevated tone of voice. . "Lookee here!', veiled the irate Thomp son, "I asked you politely what place this was; why ip thunder don't you answer?" . The stranger became excited, lie rose and replied, with the voice of an SO pound er: f'Yu-ba-dam! Do you hear that ?" In a minute Thompson, burning with the wrath of the righteous, jumped off his horse, and advanced on the stranger with an expression not "to be mistaken. The shirt aro3e and assumed a posture of offense and defense. i Arrived within a yard of him, Thomp son said : "I ask you for the la3t time, what place is this?" Putting his hands to his mouth, his op" ponent roared : , "Yu-ba-dam !" . TheTicxt minute they were at it. Firt, Thompson was down : thcivtha shirt; and then it was a dog fall that is, both were down. They rolled about, kicking up a tremendous dust. They squirmed around so energetically, that you'd have thought they had a dozen lesrs instead of four. It looked like a prize fight between two pu gilistic centipedes. "Finally, they both rolled off the bank and into the river. The water cooled them. They went down to gether, but came up hcparate, and put out for the shore. Uoth reaehed.it about the a in e time, and Thompson scrambled up the bank, mounted his warlike steed, and made tracks, leaving his foe gouging the mud out of one of his eyes. Having left the business portion of the town that is to say, the corner where the three bars were kept he struck a house in the suburbs, before which a little girl of about four years of age was playing. "What place is this, Sissy?" he asked. .The little girl, frightened at the drow ned rat Cgure which the stranger cut, streaked it for the house. Having reached the door she stopped turned and squealed "Oo-be-dam I" t"Good Heavens I" said Thompson, dig ging his heels between his horde's ribs "Gcol Heavens! let -me get out of this horrid place, where not only the men but the very babes and sucklings swear at in offensive travelers." The dance, which at the present day is so much used as a diversion, was in its origin a sort of mystery and cere mony. The Jews to whom God himself gave laws and ceremonies introduced it in their festivals, and the pagans, after them, . consecrated it to their divinities. After the passage of the Red Sea, Moses, and Miriam, lus sister, to return thanks to the Almighty for the preservation of the peo ple, and the defeat of the Egyptians drowned iu the Red Sc, arranged two great dances, with music. Uue was for the men, and the o'her for the women. They dauced, singing the substance of the fifteenth chapter of Erodus, aud per formed graceful ballets. C. A newspaper was started not lonr zgo, the first number of which contained a letter from a correspondent signed, "A Constant Reader 1" Bay- Garibaldi has seventeen physicians attending him. . TUDOR. 1 CARD. WlTMKU's BllIDGK, Lancaster Tp. July 30, 1800. Messus. Etass and Watson: Gentlemen The small sizo No. 1 Salamander safe which I urchnstd from our agent, Mr. Adam 11. Ba-r, in Lancaster City, on July 20ih, 1853, has been subjected to a very severe test, which it withstood in a most satisfactory manner. This Safe, containing all ray books together with va'u ble pf.pers belonging to myself and some to my neighbors 'and friends, and represethig a vahie of over Twenty Thous and ' Dollars. (520,000) was in my Mill which was destroyed on the night of the 27th of Ju ly, 18(50, and passed through the fiery ordeal unscathed. Th Safe wasonthe second floor and fell to the basement of the Mill, and was subjected for six hours to an intense heat anrong the rui.is, which wasgrcatly increased by the combustion of a large quantity of grain confined within .he brick walls. After the fire the safa was opened and the books and papers taken out in a state of perfect preser vation, the paper not eveu being discolored. This fact was. however, to many bystanders a better recommendation" of your Sares than could be expressed in any other words from me. Yours Respectfully, sel3 SAMUEL KANCK.
