FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25 1835
LIFE IN HAVANA
TIle Social late trait Curious Cen
tOWN or the Cubans at Home
Xxtrava aut Ways of
Doing Things
The Cuban matches are away behind
the age I have never succeeded in light
ing one without burning the tips of my
fingers and have Loncluded that their one
redeeming virtue is the persistency with
which they burn when lighted
No trueborn Cuban will carry his
satchel to the depot however small it
may be or however short the distance
I1 hear refined ladies ejaculating Dios
mio or Jesus or Ave Maria Paris
eima over the slightest occurence with
the same innocent nonchalance with I
which I have heard the French ladies I
say Moil Dieu I and the German ladies
say Mein Gott This fashion of mak
ing common use of names that are sacred
is demoralizing the world over The Mos
lem wonders if God is going to have it
rain today and even the Bedouin rob
ber prays that the peace of God may rest
upon you and this show of piety has
robbed sacred themes of all their power I
with those people The Catholic church
I has gone further in Cuba and even the
streets the stores the people the ships
I
the sugar plantations are named after
saints or Christian virtues As in Can
I
ton China the translated names ofsomo
I
of the streets are high sounding in the
extreme as for instance that of the street
of Pious Works Hotels jrickyards
jails regiments and tobacco shops all ad
vertise themselves under such titles as
Sacred Heart Faith Hope Charity Con
I ception Annunciation etc while likely
enough the proprietors first name was
Jesus Thus the people come to be care
I less in the use of hallowed names al
though a capacity for literal profanity is
not one of the accomplishments of the
j Spanish language
Whatever tho people do they do ex
travagantly I have seen a young man
I with three monster gold rings on one lit
I tie finger j and both ladies and men
I plaster their faces with powder till they
look ghastly beyond description
If you look into the sitting room of a
welltodo family you will observe two
long rows of cane seat rockingchairs
placed exactly opposite each other and
leading usually to a window The arrange
ment has an aspect of stiffness which you
will at once feel but this aspect of
stiffness is eensibly emphasized when you
learn that it is an inflexible Cuban rule
for the ladies to sit in one row and the
gentlemen in the other There is no
twilight in Cuba The sun drops redly
out of sight in the gulf andit is dark
The day has no aftermath the stars
I hurry to supply tho place of the departed
orb and awuy to the souththe south
ern cross augments their industrious
twinkling
One would think Havana harbor would
be full of excursion steamers but I have
never been able to find one The Havan
ese have not yet discovered this popu
lar American variety of amusement
Nature is very kind to the lower ani
mals in these latitudes The hair of the
pig comes out leaving him sleek and
shining while the wool of the sheep un
dergoes a change of texture But nature
does not single out the Cuban hen for
such favors On the contrary the feathers
I
ers of the hen remain as numerous as
anywhere else and in view of the fact
II that there is no cold weather the hen is
deluded into laying all the year round
her product being such diminutive eggs
as you may see at any bodega town
It is customary to keep the volante and
I the family horses in an apartment in the
I house
I Vnn roill liava nn fUffipnlfv if vnil ilrfi
put bright and early any morning i in i see
I ing the Cuban milkman about supplying i
I his round of patrons He drives his milch
kine b fore him from house to house and I
directs the lacteal stream into such a dish i I
as the family may provide right in the j
presence of the housemaid Thus the cit I
izeris are assured of an undiluted liquid
though I sometimes fancy I would prefer
to have the product of those emiciated
bruised Cuban cows dilutedand that
very sensibly I have seen the same sys
tem in other countries notably with
goats instead of cows in the cities of
Athens and Cairo
Gambling is as popular here as in New
Orleans andI guess more so although I I
have not entered any dens analagou5 to
those of the Rue Royale as yet Monto
is the only game prohibited by law l
The street cries are extraordinary I
though not to be compared with those of
Japan You will not hear them at all
perhaps at one of the swell hotels any
more than those of Yokohama in one of
the foreign hostelries there But once
get into real Havana and you will fancy
a riot must be brewing You hurry down
I stairs expecting to witness some shocking
I atrocity but find that it is only the man
with fruit onions or eggs for sale com
placently notifying his customers of his
readiness to serve them Sometimes he I
is on foot loaded down and again he is 1
accompanied a shambling old crUe of
a horse who bears the burdens while his
master Hoes < the bawling I
I Akin to this is the method of signalling I i
by a shrill hiss50 common in Paris
The newsboy a block away the cabman
on the other side of the street the waiter I
at theother end of the cafe are all sum
moned by the everlasting Pst And I
Strange to say there is a penetrating I
quality the signal whereby it may be I
heard above all the rattle and roar of the I
I street traffic and at times when an ordi
I nary Halloa would be impotent
1 I cannot educate myself out of noticing
small things and must therefore confess
Ii I that it always makes me mad to see the
I natives wear the heel of their shoes flat
tened under the heel of the foot after the
i I
heathenish fashion of the Turks and
Arabs
Of pnnrsB there is a perfect passion for
military display I
And yet I have not witnessed a drill or
parade that was equal to the average
amateur torchlight procession in Ameri
can political campaigns The bayonets
point everywhere and nowhere in partic
ular and the dangling arms suggest mo
Florida treemoss might
tions such as a
be supposed to make when agitated by a
shifting cyclone The Jubans pay nearly
twentyfive millions a year to keep up
this empty show
I believe it Is in bad taste in the states
for a person to say U Miss in the case of
be
married lady Senorita may
a
used instead of Senora however and
I
the person addressed accepts it as one of I
I these
I the fulsome compliments which
j I people are always bestowing I
numerous though not to
are
Beggars
I the extent characteristic of most tropic
countries I have seen one Chinese leper
wayside craving alms
by Gorgeousplumed the peacocks practice
unearthly screeches on the roof
their buzzards wander over the

The mines put all men for once upon a

f I annihilated Social and financial in
equalities between man and man were
together swept out of sight Each strang
j er was welcomed and told to take a pan
and pick and go to work himself The
richest minor in the camp was seldom
J I able to hire a servant those who had
j been glad to serve others were digging
in their own claims The veriest green
horn was as likely to uncover the
richest mine in the gulch as the wisest
of exprofessors of geology j and on
the other hand the claim on
the river might suddenly give
out and never again yield a dollar The
I poorest man in the camp could have j I
1 handful of golddust for the askingfrom
a more successful neighbor to give him
another start and help him hunt for bet j I
ter luck No one was ever allowed to

less To a little camp of 184880 an I
old miner writes me a lad of sixteen I i
came one day footsore weary hungry
1 and penniless There were thirty robust
and cheerful miners at work in the ravine
and the lad sat on the bank watching
them awhile in silence his face telling
the sad story of his fortunes At last one I
stalwart miner spoke to his fellows say
ing Boys Ill work for an hour for that
I chap if you will At tho end of the
hour 100 worth of golddust was laid in
the youths handkerchief The miners
made out a list of tools and necessaries
