Tile Story of Kissaue
SAN FRANcisco April 2The case of Wm
Kissane which is surrounded with so much
mystery and which was heard yesterday in
New York before Recorder Smith has at
tracted immense attention in California
This is due to the fact that Kissane it is
said is now known to be one of the most
prominent and wealthy citizens of Califor
nia and connected by marriage with many
leading families in this city Many at
tempts have been made by the press of San
Francisco to got at the actual facts in the
case and unearth the identity of this myste
rious individual The immediate notoriety
of the case is due to the motion made by
counsel for J B Hart of this city to have
a nolle jjrosfgui entered in the indictment
for forgery on file in the District Attorneys
office in New York against this man Wm
Kissane The indictment was for the for
gery of a check for 12000 in 1854 on the
Chemical Bank of New York A prominent
gentleman last night who knows Kissane
well and who knew him in the East and
who has been as also has his fumil a severe
sufferer by Kissane gave to the Associated
Press reporter tonight the full story of
Kissanes career suppressing only the
name which he is known by in California
It may be said here that Kissane is one of
the most prominent and wealthy residents
of Sonoma county and that his half
brother is a prominent attorney of this city
and his connections by marriage are all
leading society people The statement of
this gentleman is as follows It is believed
that the statements made through Jesse B
Hart in New York and telegraphed here
have revealed the identity of Kissano and
may probably lead to a complete disclosure
of his criminal practices in the past It is
well known by certain parties that Kissano
has been guilty of felony since his arrival
in California He is unrepentant and seeks
only the removal of the legal disabilities
and penalties for his past crimes He is
still under indictment for forgery in New
York City and for murder in Arkansas re
sulting from the great loss of life by the
burning of the steamer Martha Washington
bound from Cincinnati to New Orleans
near Helena Arkansas on the night of
January 14 1852 He was on his indict
ments in January 1853 together with some
others placed on trial for conspiracy and
defrauding insurance companies by fictiti
ous cargoes said to be on the
steamer Martha Washington He was con
victed on three occasions in Cincinnati
on these charges but each time managed to
evade the law After this he was arrested
for murder and taken to Helena Arkansas
but owing to a lack of county funds and the
neglect of Congress to provide an appropri
ation for his proseoution he again escaped
the clutches of the law A request was
made by Hon James Guthrie for an appro
priation but it could not be passed Kis
sane in the meantim had jumped his bail
and the next heard oiHm were forgeries
on the Chemical Bank of New York in
August 1854 for which he was arrested
convicted and sentenced to Sing Sing prison
New York Among his effects which were
found at the time of his arrest were some
notes of five hundred dollars denomination
on the Chemical Bank of New York He
was brought to New York handcuffed and
locked to the wrist of an officer The key
to his handcuffs was lodged safely in the
pocket of the Chemical Bank teller who
still lives to probably assist in the last chap
ter of Kissanes criminal career While in
Sing Sing he offered to make a full confes
sion of the Martha Washington steamboat
conspiracy and to confirm the same on the
witness stand so as to aid the insurance
oompanies in resisting the fraudulent suits
brought against them for fiotitious charges
The authorities concluded his testimony
would be available and useful for that pur
pose as he might not voluntarily give
the testimony if ho served the full time
For this reason hs was liberated and there
after made a full confession of the Martha
Washington conspiracy the burning of the
boat and the effort to secure the insurance
The confession occupied about one hundred
pages of foolscap His gang one of the
most complete organizations ever known in
the country scattered in consternation
when the fact of the confession was made
known Kissane himself violated his promise
to the insurance companies and fled to
Nicaragua where under an assumed name
it was reported he had been shot His
career in California under another assumed
name is well known and all his connections
in business social and marriage are equally
well known he having acquired enormous
wealth His reckless attempt to quash the
indictment in New York will bring on him
self and his immediate friends many of
whom are ignorant of his past history most
unpleasant consequences General Dorr of
this city who is perfectly familiar with
Kissanes career stated tonight that on first
seeing him in this State some two years ago
he immediately identified him but that out
of consideration for Kissanes family and
connections he had persistently refused to
make any statement in regard to him
hoping he would make restitution to those
whom he had ruined
Duns Weekly Trade Review
NEW Yom April 2it G Dun i Co in
their weekly trade review say With three I
inches of snow in Virginia the roads in I
manv sections almost impassable and
Canada railroads blocked by drifts the dis
tribution of products is difficult But for
the extraordinary demand to anticipate the
InterState act and its change of rates this
retarding weather would have been more
seriously felt As it is the dry goods and
boot and shoe dealers complain that from
the regions buried in snow small orders
come for summer clothing and the deep
mud and bad roads in many of the States
arrest the movements of produce The bus
iness of the past month has been remarka
bly large not only at New York and Bos
ton but Chicago reports a phenomenal
record and other cities as well Largely
this business has been in antici
pation of the demands for eight days to
come or more hence it is scarcely possible
that the noteworthy unseasonable reaction
should not be felt The opinion grows that
the InterState act will help the railroads
rather than commerce Its evident ten
dency is to cause lower charges on local
traffic which is smaller and higher charges I
on long through traffic which for impor
tant roads is larger Neither the uncer
tainty nor the activity in markets under
such circumstances indicates much for the
future
Wheat has risen one cent with sales of
45000000 bushels for the week
Corn oats oil and pork products sugar
and tea have scarcely changed with moder
ate dealings Coffee has advanced a quar
ter Cattle and wool are weaker with tin
and copper Cotton has boomed with sales
of 1088200 bales at New York in six days
Print cloths are barely 339 cents with only
168000 pieces in sight against 1584000
oa o Iron is weaker at
pieces two years ago ago
Philadelphia and Pittsburg The collapse
of the coal combination and the higher and
fixedrates for transportation of coal do not
encourage consumers
Whether the bank clearings outside of
New York ranging 18 per cent above last
year indicate more than a temporary ao
tivity cannot yet be judged but the great
reduction of rates on the Canadian canals
for shipment to Canadian ports and atti
tude of the Grand Trunk toward other
trunk lines foreshadow a sharper competi
tion between the Canadian and New York
forwarding merchants and other new ar
rangementa indicate manufacturing devel
opment in Canada
The Mexican tariff promises a large
traffic in that direction after July 1st With
Aprils settlements over large amounts of
money usually return hither and this year
the amount sent to Boston has been un
usually large the dividends payable there
amounting to 12662 against 7061111
last year
Money has ranged from 3 to 8 per cent for
the week but operations to cause a strin
gency will now be increasing so rapidly
now unless an unusual outgo of money
should set in as in 1884 in place of the re
turn customary in April The failures dur
ing the first quarter 1887 were smaller in
number than in 1886 1885 or 1884 but the
aggregate of liabilities was larger than last
year not because of the general enlarging
of the indebtedness but because a few un
usually heavy failures were included The
failures in the last seven days number for
the United States 196 for Canada 27total
223 compared with 259 last week and 214 I

The Chicago Commune
CHICAGO April 2Emissaries from the
Socialistic headquarters have had frequent
communications with Mayor Harrison and
they now boldly assert that they can show a
list of 40000 pledged voters for the Social
ists ticket Jo Greenhal the leading light
of the Socialists and a city officer under
Harison says History is being made very
fast just now Yon sea Chicago is a European
colony The masses are day laborers
who do not own their business Three
hundred firms employ 15000 workmen
within fifteen miles of the City Hall It
is distinctly a capitalist city Here the
fight is to be made between capital and
labor They are now face to face Harrison
is playing a peculiar part He was never
eleoted by the Democrats The Socialists
made him He has been honest enough to at
least acknowledge it The tables
have changed The Socialists have
their own ticket The Democrats
are asked to get out of the way The
mayor is done Democrats will now return
the compliment by voting the Socialistic
tickets This is the understanding The
holders of Presidential appointment offices
will not be disturbed on Tuesday but all
wheel horses of the Democracy will vote
our ticket knowing they will share their
benefits The campaign will cost them
nothing and their enemies the Republi
cans will go down before the fusion ticket
Talk about the Irish I tell you that coer
cion bill is making them mild Socialists
every day We carry every Irish ward in
Chicago by next Sunday The people may
become desperate for fear of the Socialists
The citizens may rise up in a day and com
pel all party lines to be dropped and de
mand a union of all citizens to defeat the
Socialists If they become alarmed at the
Commune they may do this This is a con
test between the American Commune and
capital It is irresistible
The Haddock Murder Trial
Sioux Cm Iowa April 2The defense
in the Haddock trial are laying the founda
tion of a plot charging Leavitt with the act
of murder The witnesses yesterday morn
ing swore positively that an hour before the
murder they saw Leavitt on Fourth street
wearing light pants Other witnesses testi
fied to his having made remarks about
killing Haddock on the day of the murder
The testimony however is not wholly con
fined to Leavitt A part of it has been di
rected against the character and utterances
of Bismarck
Joseph Sprey testified that he saw Leavitt
on the night of August 3rd and that he
wanted to borrow a revolver from witness
Coroner Watterman then placed the ver
dict of the coroners jury in evidence but
the defense objected and their objection
was sustained
Jailor James Crookshanks testified that
Leavitt visited the jail November 27th and
called on Bismarck in one of the cells and
said to him Give me your wifes address
and I will send her some money and we
will see that she is all right till you get out
You know Bismarck that I didnt kill Had
dock Bismarck made no reply Leavitt
said You saw John Arensdorf shoot as
well as me
Yes sir yes sir Leavitt said we will
come out all right if you stick to the story
I told you
Al Erwin testified that the day after the
murder Leavitt spoke to him and said I
guess I have got my foot into it If I am
arrested will you go on my bonds

Devouring Flames
MONTEREY California April 2The Hotel
Delmonte was discovered to be on fire
shortly before midnight Everything was
done to save it but without success The
magnificent hotel and contents are a total
wreck No lives lost There were nearly
300 guests in the hotel mostly Eastern peo

to give all an opportunity to escape Most
of the guests lost all their trunks and cloth
ing Those who were not overcome by fright
saved their jewels and money They were
all huddled together in the grounds where
they had to shiver all night many of them
having nothing more than their night clothes
on The heat from the flames of the burning
building kept them warm for a time but
as the flames died out many ladies suffered
severely from cold All who could sought
refuge in local hotels and arrangements
have been made by the railroad company to
take them to san Francisco as early as
possible this morning
The hotel belonged to the Southern Pacific
Railway Company and was considered the
handsomest watering place hotel in
America It cost 300000 and was not in

the Southern Pacific Company was seen
early this morning and said the hotel would

BAIRDS MINSTRELS
Their Successful Performance at
ihc Theatre Lan Night
Bairds Minstrels opened their Salt
Lake engagement last evening to a
crowded house and they opened the
house to let the people out only after
they had racked them over and over
again with laughter Since the company
appeared here before there have been a
great many changes in the personnel of
the troupe and all these are
for the better Then some of
the old artists who convulsed
audiences on the occasion of their last
appearance here were at it again last
night and got in their work to good ad
vantage There was another good crowd
at the matinee this afternoon and the
prospects are that there will not be
standing room left tonight They give
a good show and deserve appreciation
LET THERE BE LIGHT
Wonderful Improvement In Incan
descent Lighting
Some scientific improvements have
been made recently in lighting and the
increase of power is nowhere better
shown than in the Incandescent Lamps
which are handled by Messrs McCallum
Co These lamps are rapidly growing
in favor and when once a trial has been
given them it is impossible to get along
without one of these lamps The follow
ing testimonials will convey an idea of
their popularity
Messrs H S McCallum < Co Salt Lake
City Utah GENTLEMEN I have burned the I
Incandescent Lamp procured of you along
side of a Chicago Lamp in order to compare
the merits the two and find your lamp to
be decidedly superior in all respects It
furnishes a brighter light with less con
sumption of oil the light is steadier and
therefore much easier on the eyes It can
be truned down low without smoking while
the other when turned low becomes a reg
ular smut mill and smokes more or less at
all times as the condition of our ceiling
plainly shows The oil chamber of the Chi
cago lamp when in use becomes so hot as
to be very uncomfortable to the hand when
carried around I am pleased to find this is
not the case with the Incandescent There
are other advantages that might be men
tioned such as the stop in the wick move
ment the flamespreader etc but a trial
will demonstrate its superiority over any
lamp thus far introduced
Respectfully J J SNELL
