THE CRIME
TLis morning witnessed a crime un
paralleled the history of the country
The assassination = of Lincoln coming as
it did aLwo close of a long and desperate
war andus the last expiring throbe of
that struggle of fierce hate and passion
was an ifUjnitely i more logical event than
this horrd 60 A dumb horror seems to have
taken pokeseion of everybody and few
seem to realize the present situation much
less foracalt the future A great crowd
gathered clmosl instantly around the
Baltimore hnd Potomac depot in which
the President WaS shot A hundred dif
ferent conflicting stories of the man
ner of tbo < shooting and of its effect
spread like wildfire throughout the city
By common consent business was sus
pended in the shops and stores as well RS
in the publfcoffices and the population of
Washington emptied itself into the strf etc
and gather 4 tat every corner to listen to
the details told of the tragedy The Pre
sident andAlr Blaine rode to the depot I
this morning In a carriage together Mr
Blaine sayethat President Garfield wes
in an unusually joyous mode and several
times expressed his keen gratifications
that the relations between himself and
the members of the cabinet were so bar
monions and that the Administration
was a unit When the carriage arrived
in front of the depot the President and
Mr Blaine left it and entered the ladies
waiting room through which they passed
arm in arm Mr Blaine says ha dropped
L =
tne JTresiaenvs arm as iney were paesiujj
through the door into the main room at
which instant two slots were fired Mr
Blaine saw a man running and started to
wards him but turned almost immedia
tely and saw that the President had
fallen It was then that he first realized
that the shots had been fired at the Presi
dent He sprang towards him and as he
did so several others and raised his head
from the floor As the President fell he
exclaimed My God > At this time
the PostmasterGennra James Secretary
Windom and Secretary Lincoln who
had arrived earlier than the time were
promenading on the platform outside
General Jaroes says tha Col Jameson
of the postoffice department rushed out
of the dept immediately after the shots
were fired and exclaimed U J he Pres
dent is shot Either the secretary > r
another gentleman of the prty ex
claimed Oh nonsense Col Jameson
I saw it The party then rushed back
and found Secretary Blame who ap
peared to be the only cool man in ihe
crowd bending over the President and
tbeflping the people buck Physicians
were h stely sumroned and Drs B is
Kyburn ard several nther were soon in
attendance J he President was re
moved to a room in the second
s ory and a preliminary examination
of his wound wa mide but the bnll
which had entered the right side of his
back near the spinal co uran and imme
diately over the hip bone could not be
found although its course was traced fur
about three inches it having passed for
ward and downward As soon as he bad
fired the shots the assassin was seized by
Officer Xearnpy and immediately hur
tied away t > the police headquarters
This was fortunate for him for as soon as
the dazed crowd acertained that the
murderer was in custody there was talk
of lynching him and if the excited
crowd could huve laid hands on him his
tale would have been a sudden and tragic
one About 10 am the President was
borne through the depot building to an
ambulance in waiting on the outside
The ambulance was surrounded by police
and driven rapidly to the Executive
Mansion An excited crowd formed at
once but at the White House the crowd
was stopped and none but a select few
admitted The Agates of the Executive
Grounds were immediately closed and
guarded by soldiers and policemen and
nobody wan admitted without a pass from
the Presidents private secretary and
members of the cabinet who were at the
depot when the shooting occurred were
immediately summoned and oth mem
bers of the cabinet then at their d sks in
the departments were notified a d came
at once to the White Hou e All of them
remained in attendance during the day
and night Soon kfpr the Presidents
removal to the White House he appeared
to rally and several encouraging dia
patcnes were sent out XTOUI noon tne
symptoms grew unfavorable and hourly
bulletins to that effect were Bent out
As ttii dtlY wore on the Presidents symp
toms grew less favorable his pulse grad
ua Jy accelerated un il ht 7 pm it stood
at 140 At thi hour the alt ndirg physi
cians could lula out no hope for his re
covery Dr Ryburn bid h We have
not been able to find the ball snd the
Pr sidentV condition is tuh that we can
not urobe 1m wound The course of the
bullet ha been trectd about ibres inches
and there lostl here has been considerable

Our only hope is i < that this blteding will
cease oi itielf Human skill can do

Its a most shocking event and has so

THE BULLET
Dr Bliss states this morning that ex
aminations made yesterday afternoon and
evening disclosed the fact that the bullet
entered the Presidents body between the
tenth and eleventh ribs on the right side
of the spinal column and passing for
ward and downward into and through
thejlower end right lobe of the liver
finally lodged In the anterior portion ot
the abdomen
PARALLEL CASES
Considerable encouragement was de
rived tonight by friends of the Presi I
dent by the statement made by Chief I
Brooks of the secret service division of
the treasury department in which he re
lated the details of the shooting of Jim
Fiskejr and himself In both in
stances Brooka says the bullet enter d
in identically the same place as did the
ball in the body of President Garfield to
day Probing for the ball in Picks
case Brooks says was undoubtedly the
cause of his death In his own case he
said there was no attempt made to probe
the wound and he carries the ball to
