A Pronounced Success at the
Salt Lake Theatre Last
Night
I
The curtain rose to a crowded
hcuEe at the Salt Lake Theatre last I
night and ater the performance
began people continued comine till
every seat was taken and large
numbers were standing in all parts
of the house The performance
may be unhesitatingly pronounced
one of the best in the variety line
ever seen in this city for each per
former is an acknowledged star in
his or her specialty and most ot
them stand unrivalled
The audience was put in such a
good humor by 1he opening
sketch entitled The Kitchen
Domestic performed by Fran
Bennett Miss Lizzie Gardener
and Frank Godia that they were
on the verge of being tickled to
dh by some of the acts which
followed Part of the pr gramme
might be said to be rather too much
of the concert hall stamp but this
could scarcely be an objection as it
is high class concert hail and HA
No1 of its kind and it would be
difficult to raise any other objection
The audience was convulsed with
laughter at the inimitable farcial
contortions and elastic dancing of
Fred Matthews and delighted to
the verge enthusiasm by the won
derful bicycling feats of the Selbini
family father mother and chiid
who performed on their bicycles
something after the fashion of the
champion circus riders on horse
back The child a mere baby
dressed in a cunning little costume
consisting of two small ilk flags
took the house by storm lasoinaiing
some members of the audience
to such an extent that they threw
silver quarters and halt dollars to
her on the stage I
Then followed one of the most I
comical and best acted sketches
ever seen on any stage entitled the
Workingmans Sbtibe performed by
Messrs Conroy Daly Thompson
and Flynn This act must be seen
to be appreciated it is a perfect
satire and is given by the four
shamrocks in a highly original and
artistic style The skipping rope
daneeuBe Miss Lottie Elliott
scored another victory for the
troupe and by general verdict was
declared inimitable Her grace and
endurance were astounding and
the claim made for her in the
bills as the idol of the poetry of
motion is in no degree an esagger
ition
Space will not permit a further
rehearsal in detail suffice it to say
that the show is excellent Wain
ratta the wonder of the wire start
led everybody and perhaps to some
extent eclipsed everything else
The closing act All Foals Day
was a fitting finalo to an evenings
amusement which each member of
audience felt was well worth
his money
London Bank Trouble
Nothing new in relation to this
matter transpired yesterday ex
cept that it was not J R Walker of
the firm of Walker Bro < > who went
on the bond for Bowers but a
nephew of that gentleman the
cashier in the dry goods department
of the firm It is probable that the I
bank will Droceed as soon as possible i
to pay off all the depositor and
that it will then close up entirely
There seemed to be no doubt on
the street yesterday that depositors
would get all their money

PRESIDENT JOHN TAYLOR
He was pleased to have another
opportunity of meeting with the
saints in annual conference he was
thankful for the favorable circum
stances and the beautiful weather
which we now enjoy These occa
sions were fraught with events of
importance to the Latterday
Saint causing them to reflect upon
the goodnessaud mercy of God and to
strengthen and encourage them for
the events of the future The Father
and the Son instituted it aDd it had
been perpetuated by the Inspiration
of the holy ghost and the introdac
ion of the holy priesthood Pro
phets had looked forward with joy
and had written and sung of thia
day It was the dispensation of
the fuIness of times It was not
iithin the power of any man no
matter what their wisdom or abil
ity to carry on this work without
Gods aid They were indebted to
the wisdom and guidance of God for
the inception and beginning of this
work and in each successive step
hat they had taken they wereins
ebted to Him for all the progress
they had made Without His aid
no man whatever his position
ould do anything fjr the aJvsnce
ment of this wors
All the children of God were in
terested in this work the living the
dead and unborn and they as a
people held their destinies to a great
extent in their hands for their ac
tions not as individuals but as a
eojle would hay a bearing upon
nations as well as individuals in the
future President Taylor hailed the
congregation as Ma brethren and
sisters invokeJ the blessiog of God
upon them in Conference and de
clared that His wath and indigna
tion would be upon their ejemiea
and all who womd fight against
Zion
APOSTLE GEORGE TEASDALE
said upon receiving the gospel he
received a knowledge of ita tiuth
for himself The history of this
people was singularly like that of
Abraham having left all to obey
the gospel They had believed in
the true and living God and obeyed
His gospel and received the prom
ised blessings The promses that
were made and their fulfillment tin
the case of those who received the
gospel was an evidence that Gods
power was with His servants and
their authority was valid Another
evidence of the divinity of ths
work was the peace that reigned in
the families of the Saints even in
l what was called polygamy and it
would be found that there was more
trouble in monogamous families i
than among those who had re I
ceived the celestial law of mar
riage This was accounted
for by the fact that this people came
here for the love of God and they
tried to claim the blessings prom
iced to those who seek first the
kingdom of God and his righteous
ness Though the elders were treated
despitefully by the people of the
TTrnTlrl rronO7 llT fhorn Tirara Q fn
uJu 5IJ4LkLLJg ULi n 1V
who gladly received the Gospel The
signs still followed the believer and
the power of God was continually
being made manifest in response to
the ministrations of the servants of
Gcd The only way they could ex
pect the bessings of God was by
keepng his commandments and if
they did this they need not fear the
efforts of men They conceded they
had the right to believe but denied
the right to practice their religion
Such was the result of the boasted
enlightenment of the men of this i
naiton God help such intelligence I
They were interested in doing good
to themselves and mankind then
keep the commandments of God
and be blessed with the power to re
deem yourselves to redeem the
dead and have Ig10ry added unto
you for having made good use of
your talents And they owed it to
God haying come here pure to re
turn with the same character they
had when they left his presence
Theory would not do alone for they
would judged by tho deeds done
in the body and professions or good 1
desires were not sufficient
APOSTLE P H LYilAN
Rejoiced in the opportunitie3 af
forded on these occa ions His re
ligion required not only good inten
tions but good works Faith would
not avail only as it prompted to
works If the true faith existed it
would prompt to action What ad
vantage to only profess to believe in
the various ordinances and princi
ples of the gospel and have not
faith to go forth and perform the
work A religion without works is
dead It was singular liberality
that would only permit men to be
lieve God nqjiired them to keep
His commandments as well as to be
lieve in them and it were better
that they had never Leen born than
to break the commandments of G3d
Their hopes depended on dong the
works of righteousness They
would be just the kind of people
that God desired them to be if they
kept His commandments They
were chosen to perform this work
before they came here they had
made covenants to keep the com
mandments of God and did not ez
pect to wait until the hereafer to
receive blessings receiving blessings
here evelY day They knew that God
lived and had an assurance of this
beyond all the reasoning and
sophistries of men They knew
also that this was the work of God
They knew these things beyond all
doubt as they know that they have
a living And they knew that the
nations that fought against Zion
would be destroyed and cutoff The
servants of God were bearing these
testimonies to the nations but the
people hardened their hearts and
rejected the truth If they would
listen and obey they might receive
the same blessings as the Saints en
joyed As they had this knowledge
let them strive to keep all of the
commandments that they mght be
blessed with the unspeakable riches
of eternity which through their
mortal imperfections they were not
now prepared to fully realize He
testified that the kingdom was
never more firmly rooted than at
pre ent that there were never so
many persons who were devoted to
the truth and that it would con
tinue to grow in power as God had
intended
