15ft to guess for the motive If we were
to guess it would be to the effect that
1 certain Liberals who once upon a time
i fcin the dim distant past trained with
the Democrats now that the

el the action would like to
reassert their fealty to the party in the

There is besides another circumstance

Liberals but we heard nothing of any
Democratic nominees of any Dem

THE REPUBLICAN organs are now turn
ing their attention to the matter of
selecting President Clevelands cabinet
for him and with remarkable unanimity
they fill the places with familiar name
of those who figured on the southern
side n a w r that occurred in tbfs coun
try when this generation was in swad
dling cloths Mr Clevelands career in
dicates that he will have more to do
with making up his cabinet than an
other man and if he selects exconfed
erates for heads of the executive depart
ments of the nation it will be because
he beliores the niea will boat serve the
country and not becaue they were
ever rebels The Jfcepublicans persisted
for four years in saying that Mr Tilden
was too feeble for Democratic use and
when the grand old sago of Gramercy
Park positively refused to serve as
Presidential nominee the Republicans
fell to abusing Cleveland calling him a
weak man and saying that if he were
nominated their standardbearer would
have walkover Ho was nominated
and the score of the walkover has just
been recorded Whenever Democrats
are wise and they have been wise for
some time past they do not apply to
Republicans for advice and never heed
counsel that is volunteered by their
enemies

tor In the present Congress there are
thirtyeight Republicans thirtysix
Democrats and two Readjusters who
invariably vote with the Republicans on
all political questions With this Con
gress the terms of twentyfive Senators
expire fourteen of these are Democrats
and eleven Republicans Of the four
teen Democratic seats twelve will be
filled by members of that party and two
by Republicans the Democrats losing a
benator in Oregon and another in Cali
fornia However they gain one in
Illinois making tiieir number thirtyfive
after March 4th The Republicans
elect successors to ten of their eleven
retiring members and will gain the two
Democratic seats noted above The
Senate of the next Congress will then
stand Republicans including Mahone

to enjoy the benefits of his administra i

ridiculous law that the successful can I

election goes to the Legislature The
Nutmeg State has been districted in such
a way that while the majority of the
voters are Democrats a majority of the
Legislators are Repubhcans The result
of the absurd election law and of the
gerrymandering is such that in the pre8
