The following Ogden news should
have reached Salt Lake in time for pub
lication yesterday morning but did not
reach the office on account of the late
ness of the mail
I
fhe Reason Why
See here whats the matter with
your Ogden news How is it that
THE HERALD has not contained your
Ogden items for the last day or two 1
These and numerous similar questions
were poured into our ears on every
hand yesterday The reason why our
Ogden news has not been published
lately is on account of the enforced
absence of our agent from the city for
two or three days Should we be ab
sent in the future however we will
make arrangements for the news just
the same and will not disappoint our
readers any more in the future
City Council
The City Council met yesterday I
afternoon pursuant to adjournment I
After the usual opening exercises the
following petitions were presented
From H C Gibson representing
that he had taken out a license as
dealer in lumber and building materials
and that he had discontinued business
and asking that the unused portion of
the license be refunded Referred to
the committee on license with power to
actFrom
From Mrs Mary V E Hoffner ask
ing the city to sell to her lot 5 block
36 Referred to the committee on
public grounds
From John Hobbs asking to buy lots
12 and 3 block 29 plat C Referred to
the committee on public grounds
COMMITTEE BEPORTS
COUSCILOB RICH from the committee
on claims reported that that committee
have nothing to do with the plank side
walk referred to at last meeting
CoUNCILOR BOYLE from the commit
tee on fire department asked to haye
purchased a small heating store and a
small wash stand for the use of the
firemen at Firemens Hall Referred
to the committee on fire department
with power to act
ALDERMAN LBE from the committee
on water supply reported that the
water works were in good repair
The same gentleman from the com
mittee on laws reported that they could
tind nothing to warrant the remission
of the poll taxes of the members of the
brass l > > band except the clause giving
the Council general jurisdiction over
the finances of the city The members
of the band however were equally as
worthy as the firemen and if the city
has the authority he would recommend
that the petition be granted
COUNCILOR DRYER suggested that
we might as well be hung or old she p
as a lamb
COUNCILOR RICH moved to reconsider
the action taken in the case of the fire
men There was no second to the
motion and it fell to the ground
MR RICH thought the Council
might remit the poll tax of its mem
bersJ the members of the County Court
and newspaper reporters A broad
smile
ALDERMAN DEE moved that the poll
tax be remitted
COUNCILOR BOYLE suggested that this
might establish a dangerous precedent
and on being put the motion was lost
by a vote of 3 to 4
COUNCILOR FOLKEB then moved an
appropriation of50 to the baud but it
was ruled out of order
ALDERMAN DEE reported an ordin
ance to come up in miscellaneous busi
ness
COUNCILOR DRIVER from the commit
tee on streets reported hat the com
mittee ha 1 spent nearly 300 on the
street grading on the bench and
on Fourth Street The tramway
was progressing very favorably
He further reported that the
resent grade ot the streetcar trackis
r ound to be too 1 vr Last year the car
company was furnished a grade to
which they raised their road that the
streets were not graded up to the level
of the car track and that the car track
has been used as a highway and he
asked whose fault it was that the
present grade was too low and who was
responsible Referred to the committee
on streets and laws with the mayor and
attorney associated
COUNCILOR FOLKEB from committee
on public grounds recommended that
he city sell two lots to Mr Geo Mober
in compliance with that gentlemans
petition
COUNCILOR BOYLE reported adversely
on the matter of numbering the
streets One of the principal reasons
for this action is the lack of money
There are about 2000 houses tot e
city and the numbering would cost
about 1000 He further stated that
the company would prefer to have the
work done by one of our own citizens
instead of a transient He also said
that Mr Grant had asked a pain er in I
the city what the cost of the numbers
would beJ and he replied 20 cents Mr
Grant replied that he could get the
numbers from the east for 6 or 7 cents
Further he said that Mr Grant would
number the houses and collect from the
citizens if the council would pass an
enabing ordinance
Mr Driver made a few remarks on
the subject expres ing his views on the I
subject The report of Mr Boyle re
commending that the petition lay on
the table was adopted
CODNCILOB RICH represented on be
half of Messrs A H Wilson and L
Zitzman that they were about to send
east for a machine with which to bore
artesian wells and proposed to bore a
well in Lester Park square to the depth I
of 400 feet for 1000 and to proceed fur
ther than 400 feet if necessary at a price
to be agreed upon Referred to the 1 I
committee on public grounds l I
RECEDES STEVENS stated that the I
city had a note of 2000 to come due
now soon as also the interest on a cor I
poratIon note amounting to 440 The t
finance committee was > authorized to
pay the two bills
c
COUNCILOR FOLKEB renewed his mo
tion to appropriate 50 to the Ogden
Brass Band The motion was seconded
and would have been carried but for
the suggestion of Councilor Pincok that
the matter be delayed for a season The
original motion was withdrawn
COUNCILOR BOYLE entered a complaint
about water having been shut off with
out notice
He also recommended that some
action be taken in regard to the side
walks Councilor Driver moved that
property owners be notified to make
their sidewalks conform to the grade
between Fifth Street and Third on
amA Carried Councilor Rich moved
that the supervisor of water works be
instructed to notify people before their
water wastcut off at any time Carried I
The city ordinance in reference to
gambling was amended making the
penalties 100fine or 100 days imprison
ment or both The ordinance was red
three times and by its title and passed
COUNCILOB PINCOCK spoke on the sub
ject of trimming of shade trees The
limbs of trees are so low in some in
stances that they are really dangerous
and he thought thai some action should
be taken in the matter Referred to the

Musical Talent
The orchestra mentioned in these
cjlunrns a few days since has been or
ganized and is now an accomplished
fact The musicians have held some
very satisfactory practice meetings and I
while Mr Wilcox captured the boys by
storm as it were the talent displayed
by Ogden musicians greatly pleased
Mr Wilcox and there was no trouble
experienced in organizing an orchestra
that will likely prove one of the strong
est that was ever f rmed in this city
Mr Wilcox fully sustains his excellent
reputation as a musician and musical
conductor and under his discipline we
hope to see a firstclass orchestra built
up Following are the names of the
members and instruments C W Wil

Ferry the Democrat
The Democratic nominee for delegate
to Congress seems to have blossomed
out into a full fledged antiMormon
and will probably carry the full Lib
eral vote of the Territory It may be
that the simple Jeffersonian Democrats
of Ogden will feel somewhat chagrined
at the flops Mr Perry has made since
his nomination for the honorable posi
tion but if they do not like the dose
they can vote for the Peoples candi
date Dodgers containing the follow
ing legend were distributed about town
evening It would probably not be
invidious to state that gentleman 7
whom we saw on the street with the
