the Editor of THE HERALD Taking a retrospective glance at the history of Brigham City during the in terval between 1876 and 1886 many wonderful changes are visible on every handchanges which ten years ago would have been considered almost im I t possible to take place Going back to Christmas 1876 we see the Brigham City Cooperative Mercantile and Man ufacturing Institution nearly at the zenith of its prosperity with a large number of branches of home industry in full operation in which were em ployed some 500 persons all of whom were laboring for the accom plishment of one great and praise worthy objectthe permament estab lishment of home manufactures At that time we had but one store in Brig ham City which was patronized by all our citizens We had at that time one butcher shop one shoe shop one tailors shop one millinery shop one blacksmith shop Christmas 1886 in Brigham City presents a very different appearance to I that of ten years ago Our coopera tive mercantile establishment occupies large threestory building on West ern Avenue and carries about 60000 worth of stock consisting of dry goods and general merchandise This insti tution has a wholesale and retail trade and employs some six clerks Next come Boothe Peirces mercan tile establishment who also carry an extensive stock of general merchandise This firm employs three or four clerks and does a good business Next we have Mr George Gidney Mr Christian Nielsen Horsley Sons E A Box John Christ onsen Christian Hoist Lorenzo Grache and others in the mer cantile business Then we have the Box Elder wagon and hardware es tablishment which is a prosperous and solid institution and most of these business houses here had a rush of trade during Christmas time and our citizens generally appear to be prosperous and happy
