I CHANGES OF A YEAR
A Retrospective Glance at Brigham
Citys Progress
I
k f
To the Editor of THE HERALD
Taking a retrospective glance at the
history of Brigham City during the in
terval between 1876 and 1886 many
wonderful changes are visible on every
handchanges which ten years ago
would have been considered almost im
I t possible to take place Going back to
Christmas 1876 we see the Brigham
City Cooperative Mercantile and Man
ufacturing Institution nearly at the
zenith of its prosperity with a large
number of branches of home industry
in full operation in which were em
ployed some 500 persons all of
whom were laboring for the accom
plishment of one great and praise
worthy objectthe permament estab
lishment of home manufactures At
that time we had but one store in Brig
ham City which was patronized by all
our citizens We had at that time
one butcher shop one shoe shop one
tailors shop one millinery shop one
blacksmith shop
Christmas 1886 in Brigham City
presents a very different appearance to
I that of ten years ago Our coopera
tive mercantile establishment occupies
large threestory building on West
ern Avenue and carries about 60000
worth of stock consisting of dry goods
and general merchandise This insti
tution has a wholesale and retail trade
and employs some six clerks
Next come Boothe Peirces mercan
tile establishment who also carry an
extensive stock of general merchandise
This firm employs three or four clerks
and does a good business Next we have
Mr George Gidney Mr Christian
Nielsen Horsley Sons E A Box
John Christ onsen Christian Hoist
Lorenzo Grache and others in the mer
cantile business Then we have the
Box Elder wagon and hardware es
tablishment which is a prosperous
and solid institution and most
of these business houses here had a
rush of trade during Christmas time
and our citizens generally appear to be
prosperous and happy
Recreations and amusements have
been in order during the past week
un Saturday evening last our Home
Dramatic Crab performed Loves
Sacrifice to a crowded house Indeed
numbers were unable to obtain seats or
standingroom and returned home dis
appointed in not being permitted to
witness our home clubs initial perform

The play was performed in a careful
artistic and satisfactory manner Of
course Mr and Mrs E H Peirce as
usual received unnumbered econiums
for their excellent acting as the stars of
the play The other characters were
all well up in their parts and business
and hence the play ran smoothly
throughout
On Monday evening last a grand
dress character ball which was gotten
up by Mr Morris B Young was held
In the Theatre and proved to be a very
interesting affair There were about
seventy couples present most of whom
were dressed in character and the most
attractive and best of whom were Mr
Morris B Young as Miss Bridget Mc
Carthy a fine Irish girl Mrs M B
Young as the Stars and Stripes Mr
L 0 Peirce as Miss Sally a fashion

Hawaiian language which was very
entertaining Mr John Booth also
sang Michael Schnieders Party in ex
cellent style Mrs M B Young re
cited Whistling in Heaven with good
effect Mr Geo R Savage sang Tit
Willow ia a mirth provoking manner
Yesterday our Second Ward Sabbath
School officers gave the scholars a treat
in the shape of p dance In the centre
of the Hall there was a large Christmas
tree loaded with presents There were
over two hundred presents distributed
among the children at the close of the
dance and the children enjoyed them
selves immensely The inside of our The
atre is receiving > considerable improvement
J
ment The gallery has just been newly
seated and two new dressing rooms are 1
being fitted up on each side of the
stage These improvements were much
needed and will be appreciated fay
both audiences and performers at
entertainments here in the future
On Saturday evening next our
Dramatic Club will present the play of
The Two Orphans It is said that
the proceeds of last Saturday nights
performance amounted to 114 which
amount will be devoted towards a new
organ for our Tabernacle
Weather here is mild but gathering
clouds portend a coming storm

THE BEST MEDICAL writers claim that
the successful remedy for nasalcatarrh
must be nonirritating easy of appli
cation and one that will by its own ac
tion reach all the remote sores and ul
cerated t surfaces The history of the
efforts to treat catarrh during the past
few years obliges us to admit that only
one remedy has completely met these
conditions and that is Elys Cream
Balm This safe and pleasant remedy
has mastered catarrh as nothing else
has ever done and both physicians and
patients freely concede this fact The
