TILE VISION ONE OF SPLENDOR
The Choicest Spot for a HomoThe Aristocratic
Residence Site of the City Salt
lake Valley
The Popperton Subdivision people are
wide awake They have just issued
100000 pocket pamphlets with the title A
Vision of the Great Salt Lake The front
is adorned with a beautiful little scene of
the lake the printing perfect the matter
is given below and the distribution of them
will do good for Salt Lake
SALT LAKE CITY
There is but one opinion in regard to the
future of Salt Lake city Even one who
knows anything about the place feels as
sured that ere many years it will be the great
city between Brand San Francisco and
in many respects excel both Its climate
its fertility of soil its wealth of minerals
its sulphur and soda springs its wonderful
supply of raw materials for manufacturing
purposes its fresh and salt lakes the
beauty of its location and many other con
siderations give assurance of its prosperous
future It should be the supply centre for
western Colorado Arizona Nevada
southern California Idaho part of Mon
tana and southeastern Oregon It has in
exhaustible deposits of coal and iron
the basis of all manufactures It
has mineral wax asphalt gilsonite
borax alum sulphur and salt within
a few miles and on the line of the
railroads The valley in which the city is
situated is large and fertile enough to raise
table supplies for a community the size of
New York and the attractions of city
lakes and mountains should alone suffice to
build up a community of a quarter of a
million people
But it is objected the conditions
have all existed during the past
forts years and have not sufficed to
make Salt Lake a prosperous or populous
city True but while these conditions ex
istsd they were little known or understood
even by the people themselves and local
issues prevented a favorable consideration
of the material aHautages But the world
moves and the realities of yesterday be
come the memories of today The citizens
of Salt Lake have awakened from
the nightmare which has benumbed
their faculties for a quarter of a century
and arc now earnestly endeavoring to enter
upon a new career which will bring pros
perity and development
The railroads which have entered Colo
rado during the past five or six years have
all representatives in Salt Lake city
striving for the freight and passenger
traffic of Utah and the western coast Salt
Lake city is the objective point of all these
roads in their progress on the Pacific slope
and another few years will see these rail
roads within the borders of Utah
Salt Lake city is the metropolis of the
territory where the executive and all the
federal officers are stationed where the
legislature holds its sessions and where
the second most beautiful fort in America
located The difficulties of the past arc
hardly worth the consideration of the pres
ent The social features of Salt Lake have
been entirely changed in the past few years
and no longer present any startling phases
to strangers and visitors Churches of ever
denomination are well filled on Sabbath
and in the outward appearance of things
there is nothing to distinguish Salt Lake
from a staid New England town The citi
zens are peaceable and industrious and
have spent NiSOOO during the past year in an
effort to convey to the people of the United
States a correct understanding and im
pression of their material advantages
and of their desire to attain the de
gree of development to which the c
advantages entitle tnem Utah has not the
money needed for the development of its
resources but it is safe to say that there is
no spot in America which affords the same
opportunities for lucrative investment
When the prejudice which exists in the
minds of uninformed strangers toward the
city and its people is dispelled and a cor
rect estimate is formed of the actual sit
uation thousands will rush to Salt Lake
and it will astonish America by its extra
ordinary growth in wealth and population
Salt Lake city is enjoying today a degree
of prosperity unequalled in its past history
and is on the threshold of a still greater
prosperity because of the universal atten
tion it is attracting

A VISION OF THE GREAT SALT LAKE
Yonder lies the Groat Lake Americas
mysterious inland sea glistening in the
sheen and shimmer of Utahs gold and pur
ple suns t The silvery ripples on its bosom
though dazzling to the eye are poison
to the parched lips and in its waters
which cover an area of 2500 square m les
no thing of life exists save what the
microscope is necessary to discover Na
here emble
ture has wrought a wonder
matic in itself of her mysterious ways Its
grandeur soennitf and stillness inspire
th beholder with sue mid its origin and
source the speculative and scientific mind
have sought in vain to discover If the
remnant of a primordial ocean how has its
character remained unchanged during the
ages that the oceans ebb and flow have been
marked on the sands of the Pacific slope a
thousand miles away I There are no moun
tains of salt upon its margin and during the
seasons course it drinks unceasingly from
Utahs mountain streams and rivers
What a field for the poet and the artst
For the latter in the changing colors and
the variety of view for the former in the
thousand legends which imagination may
aptly associate with the history of its past
i Thus far it has not been much celebrated in
prose or verse but ore many years have pass
ed it is destined to become the most famed
spot in America and the pleasure ground
towards which the multitudes will rush
from the Atlantic and the Pacific
d The mountain which seems to bound the
horizon in the center is but an island rising
t from its depths and the other mountain to
the southwest is also an island both of
which are plentifully supplied with fresh
water drawn apparently from the same
source as the briny waters of the lake
itself
QThe point on the shore at the south end
is Garfield Beach a glorious summer resort
and at the north end beyond the famous
I hot springs is Lake Park the favorite
natatorium and pleasure ground of citizens
I and visitors lu all there are twelve
islands which lie before us three of which
are quite large and used as orchards and
i pasture grounds Five others are smaller
f but cover several thousand acres and the
others are barren and not susceptible
f 7 of cutivation What pictures of grand
cur and uiognmcence will be painted along
these shores in the future none can tell
but the happiness and comfort and pleasure
to be found here in summer homes will
soon alter the aspect of the surroundings
and draw capital and population to the
shores of Great Salt Lake
That valley which stretches in front of I
us westward from the city to the lake and
south to the Oquirrh range of mountains
and along the Wasateh range in the
shadows of which we stand into Utah val
ley a distance of thirty miles i is the view
which captivated Brigham Young and his
followers when they first emerged from
Emigration canon over there beyond Fort
Douglas It is Salt Lake valley The
foliage which spreads itself out at our feet
over an area of two miles square embowers
the city the modern Zion What a parallel
j is presented between the Israelites and the
Mormons I The valley before us was a
I veritable laud of promise to tho Mor
mons milk and honey it had none but its
I wealth of soil has made of it for the modern
Israelite the followers of Joseph Smith amore
I coveted treasure than was the prom
I ised more land to his prototype Salt Lake city
termed the modern Zion
has been aptly
I Directly in front of us to the west rising
from the foliage and lifting its massive
stands the
j walls high into the heaven
To
I temple in bold outlines
Mormon the parallel indicated it is said that
perfect
I the Jehovah who planned the tabernacle
and temple for the Jews also revealed to
The Mormon prophet the outlines and plans
monument It is an extra

ordinary work and will remain for ages

ment to every traveler who visits Salt
Jake
Here behind us only half a mile distant
lies Fort Douglas with its beautiful
rives and avenues the gem fort of
America It has fountains and foliage and
verdant lawns and beautiful homes on
which the trellis work is covered in sea
son with creeping vines and blown and
budding flowers The flowing fountains
and rushing streams are supplied with
water which has run a course from the
summit of the snowcapped mountains the
eternal brrrier which protects our lovely
valley and city from the storm the hurri
cane and the blizzard and leaves us the
blissful dwellers in an Acadia yet unknown
And the spot on which we stand from
which we hold all this beauty and loveli
ness sublimity and grandeur is Popperton
Place a subdvision of Salt Lake city and
long known as the Popper tract From
very foot of its surface comprising 152 I
acres can be seen all that has been described I
scribed There is no spot in America to
equal this No comparison can be
made between the ground on which we
stand and any other for it stands stands
alone and unrivalled the choicest spot for a
