IN RAILWAY CIRCLES
The Big Accident Near Hampton
Wyoming
THE HERALDS ACCOUNT VERIFIED I
A Southern Pacific Train Snowed in in the
Sieiras Personal and General
Points
Tho accident at Hampton Wyoming by
which so many people were injured and
which was published in our Ogden column
r f yesterday morning caused considerable of
a commotion in this city Inquiry at the
Union Pacific office for further informa
tion revealed the fact that none of the em
ployees had heard even the remotest
hint that such a calamity had occurred
Had they any knowledge of the matter
they would be only too eager to part with
it but really not a breath of such news
had reached them
Mr Resseguie was inclined to be more
sociable however and admitted that the
published accounts were in the main cor
rect
Snowed in in the Sierras
A Southern Pacific passenger train is
snowbound near Colfax Gala and the pas
sengers among them the Howard Athen
mum company are reported in a bad fix
t The snow in the Sierras is up to the tele
graph wires in some places The Rio
Grande Western passenger train from the
cast was but one hour and twenty minutes
late yesterday and the Union Pacific two
hours behind time
The Whiskers Order
Under the caption of A Dude Manage
ment the Wall Street Daily XCILS has the
9 t following concerning the order on the
Reading requiring employees to keep their
coats buttoned and to shave off their
whiskers
t If there was ever a more insolent and
arrogant assertion of an authority that the
stockholders never intended to give any
official of a railroad company we should be
delighted to chronicle it Any company has
a right to order a uniform for its employees
and make the wearing of it a condition o f
their service with the company it may even
go as far as the Reading has and insist tha
the baggagemaster no matter how hot the
weather matter how heavy the Saratoga
trunk that he is handling shall keep his
coat buttoned up to his chin but the order
that men shall not wear beards is an out
rage that can not be too sharply denounced
If a petty official can give such an order as
this he may also decide that no cross eyec sd
man can hope for employments and he may
select the color of a mans hair Charlie
Delmonico had a right to say to those seek
ing employment as waiters that he would
employ only those who were clean shaven
but when a railway superintendent under
takes to dictate to men who have serve
the company faithfully longer than he has
that they must cut their hair in accordance
with his ideas it quite time for the stock i
holders to interfere He may possibly tel
them what clothes they must wear when I
they come to the annual meeting
The Vestibule as a Life Saver
The Railway Age says The vestibule at
tachment is credited with having save d
de
many lives in a recent collision on the
Chesapeake Ohio road and it is believed
tbat the heavy sleepers at the rear of the
train would have telescoped the coache
excep for this protecting appliance The
vestibule feature in its short career ha
certainly developed several meritorious
features It evidently is of great advan
tage in facilitating passing from one car to
another and it no doubt steadies the train
in running at a high speed and upon curves
The highest claim however that can he
made for it is that it tends to prevent loss
of life in case of collision
The Duplicate Order of Train Dispatching i
The Railroad Gazette says The dupli
cate order system of train dispatching is so
manifestly superior to any other plan for
general use that little argument is neces
sary to convince experienced operating
officers who will intelligently and conscien
tiously examine the merits of the different
methods Where the single order system
is still in use it seems to be because no
careful investigation has been made With
dispatchers of the right temperament who
are careful and are not overworked an in
ferior system may be used for years with
out causing a collision and as many rail
road officers judge their pudding wholly by
the sensations of their palates it is not so
very strange that no progress is made
But the use of a wrong principle is never
justified by the fact that skilfull men can
get along in spite of it I
I
Personal and General
The Indianapolis Journal says If the
Philadelphia and Reading gets through
without a strike over the recent order re
quiring certain classes of employes to here
after report for duty with cleanshaven
faces it will be a surprise A few of the
Reading men who are noted for their fine
beards have already entered formal protest
with the authorities against the contem
plated sacrifice and use as an argument
that to rob them suddenly of this protec
4 tion would be to court a visitation of la
grippe They claim that a mans whiskers
are his own to do as he likes with
The importers of the San Francisco
chamber of commerce have appealed to the
interstate commerce commission against
discrimination by the railroads They
claim that the policy of the roads tends to
make New York the central distributing
point for tea It is complained that the
rate on through bills of lading from China
ind Japan to transcontinental points in
the United States discriminate against
shipments from San Francisco to the same
points It is said that the difference in
rates is sufficient to entirely cut off the
San Francisco merchants from the tea
business cast of the Rocky mountains
The surveyors for the Manitoba Pacific
extension report a practicable route by the
Marias pass the summit of which 370C
feet high they say can be reached by a
grade of less than one hundred feet to the
mile The pass is an open one from one to
six miles wide requiring little solid rock
work and they estimate the cost of the
road through it at not exceeding 16000
per mille It is claimed that this route to
tile coast wm DC at least one nunurcu
miles shorter than any other from Mon
tana It seems evident that another trans
continental line is to be pushed over the
Rockymountains during the next year or
two

not tempt me to have this disease over again I
am a poor man but feel rich to be relieved of
what some of the doctors said was leprosy
