FRIDAY June 13 189
The City In Brief
The Third ward choir gave a pleasant
strawberry festival in their meetinghouse
last night
The big sign Bonds Corner in the
1 centre of the block attracts attention and
draws like a magnet
The carnival chorus will comprise 200
voices possibly more They meet for
practice every evening
Maken Brothers claim that Ab Gentrys
suit for the alleged loss of money while
under their custody is a case of blackmail
In the police court yesterday John Devans
was given ten days for disturbing the
peace and George Dowell got the same dose
for being just a common ordinary nag
Strawberries have jumped up a notch
from three cups for a quarter to 10 cents a
cup They are large and luscious and in
every way superior to the California ar
ticle
Dont forget to call on the Fifth ward
ladies at the old school house on Madison
avenue opposite Lester park Go and fill
up on the nice things they will serve you
withWhen
When this scribe writes shrievalty he
means just that It seems though that
your compositor and proofreader had a
different idea and so set it up and let it go
sheriffalty
The opening excursion to Syracuse will
take place next Tuesday and be under the
auspices of the Ogden brass band Theyll
beep things straight and insure all their
r patrons a good time
The third story of the Woodmansee
building west of the Coop has been com
menced upon The work on the front indi
cates that the building will be one of the
handsomest yet erected in this city
All over the business part of the city
store fronts are being repaired and painted
BO that when Rex and his retinue arrive
they will be charmed by the neat and natty
appearance of things that they will see
J The first annual reception given by the
cadets of the Ogden military academy will
be held on the 19th instant The young
ladies who have received invitations are in
n flutter of excitement in anticipation of
the event
A fine asphaltum walk twenty feet
wide is being laid down on the east side of
Washington avenue between Twentythird
and Twentyfourth streets The sidewalk
j Drdinance is being complied with in many
parts of the city and by next fall the princi
pal pedestrians thoroughfares will be in
good condition
A new lodge of Knights of Pythias will
soon be organized in this city The uni
form rank has just been instituted and is
now in good working condition Lincoln
Division No 2 will be out next Tuesday
morning to escort the grand lodge to Castle
hall on Twentyfourth street
The accident mentioned in yesterday
mornings HERALD as having occurred to a
child named Jones was true except as to
the name The child was a daughterof O
D aud E Cook residing at Wilson who
during the absence of her parents used
kerosene in lighting a fire She was fear
jelly burned and the doctor held out but
slight hopes of her recovery
As previously stated in this column the
Ogden Power company will go on with the
work which was brought to an abrupt stop
some time ago H H Henderson has been
elected president vice C Mayne resigned
and R C Lundy is now treasurer New
blood in the shape of solid capital has
taken the place of considerable wind and
the dam will certainly be built
The municipal solons will convene in
yxiregular weekly session this evening The
jjmuestion of the tax levy will be the most
important one to call for settlement Mayor
Eiesels ideals the right one in the opinion
Of a great many citizens probably amajor
ity of the taxpayers Ogden is getting to
the front fast enough and it will be well to
make haste slowly It will make the city
healthier in the future
Three large and handsome church edi
fices are now being erected in Ogden all
of them on Twentyfourth street Ground
was broken yesterday for the Presbyte
iEjn church which will have a command
ing site on the southeast corner of Twenty
fourth street and Adams avenue This
caurcn will cost upward ol thirty thousand
dollars and be a very handsome building
When the Roman Catholics complete their
100000 edifice on which work is now pro
gressing there will be three church build
ings on Adams avenue
The bells and whistles sounded an alarm
of fire about 7 oclock yesterday morning
The alarm was occasionedby the burning
of some < < excelsior in a log house adjoin
ing the warehouse of the Boyle Furniture
company on Twentyeighth street be
tween Adams and Jeffersona nues The
lire department responded promptly and
got a stream on the fir < j after it had been
extinguished by a bucket brigade before
the firmens arrival The amount of dam
e was slIght consisting merely of the
burning of the excelsior
The unlimited use of the hose for lawn
sprinkling is not permitted so the local
press inform the people of Ogden All
right Now let there be a strict and im
partial enforcement of the ordinance If
certain parties can lawfully use the water
during certain hours let the officials see to
it that they do not encroach upon the rights
of others who are entitled to the water
during other hours Do this and all will
be satisfied Otherwise there will be some
tall kicking
Something should be done to abate the
nuisance at the foot of Twentyfifth street
north side opposite Murphys store and
right in front of the passenger station A
hole in the ground is full of stagnant water
Y The hole was excavated over a year ago
work upon it being started on the morning
of the arrival cf the first Colorado excur
sion About the first thing that Rex and
his royal retinue will see when they leave
the depot will be the green without the
gold for this pool is now in that condition
a slimy ooze If it cannot be drained out
it should be boarded over by order of the
city council It is a malaria breeder and
an eyesore to every passerby and smells
to heaven
It will bo well for parties who are buying
lots in the various and several additions to
OgJen city and they are thicker than
loaves to jirst ascertain whether the plat
of the addition in which they propose to
purchase nas been recorded in the county
recorders office Plats of additions must
be recorded before the owners of them can
legally sell a lot in them If they sell a lot
before recording the plat they are subject
to a fine of 300 and so for every lot sold
It will thus be seen that those who pur
chase in an addition the plat of which has
notbeen recorded do not get a real title to
t ir lot It behooves intending purchasers
i additions to look into this matter befcio
Itrting with their cash
