The women girls and children of New
York wear close upon 3000000 pair of
stockings in a year and that is putting tho
average only a trifle above three pair for
a each The difference in the prico of stock
Jngs is so great ranging from the un
bleached cotton which you buy for four
onnt < < I nnn nn tn thn vnonMfnilv nmlirnlfl

ered silk pair made to match the costume
and bringing lOO that it seems absurd to
try to name an average price But let mo
get at the totals in another way
There are about 250o000 pairs of cotton
woolen and little thread stockings and
hOck bought in tho city every year and
averaging these at 20 cents a pair the low
est price being four cents and tho highest
H7T to 2 the sum paid for I
them would bo just 500000 I
This I am assured by large i
dealers in hosiery is quito below the mark
But consider the otBer 400000 or 500000
pairs of mixed silk and pure silk stockings
and socks worn by rich girls and women
actresses and others who like to make a
display of costly hosiery and the figures
are almost incredible Their chief wear is
pure silk and the stockings rango from
S2ZQ in plain color up to 20 Add in this
list the fancy allsilk articles those hand
embroidered with all kinds of artistically
wrought figures produced in open work
and done to match the costume and the
prices range from 10 to 100 But put tho
average down to 3 a pairand you can
scarcely purchase an all silk pair for less
and the bill for the 400000 pairs is 1200
000 which added to the half million dollars
for the stockings worn by the poorer
classes amounts 1700000 It would be
no exaggeration to say that it costs Now
York city every year for socks and stock
ings for her female population a round
A 2000000 or enough to maintain nearly
0000 persons a whole city for a year in
food
Just a few words about tho stockin s
worn by the multitude and the fashionable
that prevail The article of common com
merce is tho cotton stockin and it is worn
by childrenschool girls and womenIts price
ranges from four or Jivo cents a pair up to
u dollar For less than a dollar indeed for
thirty cents thre are now in the market
several brands secured to the owners un
der patents of guaranteed fast black
and the same color up to the highest price
Black is now the queen of fashion and it is
not alone so in cotton but in lisle wool
worsted goods and silk Society girls and
their mothers wear black silk black lisle
or black merino and other wools actresses
and other women fond of display oven
wear them and tho yellow pick and light
blues crimsons and other fancy colors are
relegated to
SECOND KATE BALLET DANcERS
and song and dance actresses of tho var
iety stage Black was long in disfavor be
cause the dye came off upon the leg and
5 foot and was supposed to be capable of
blood poisoning Girls who stood all day
were apt to find their feet swollen when
l the dye came out profusely and tho doctors
have records of numerous deaths resulting
from the dye Dread not fashion turned
women to light fancy colors but now the
other dye is fast they are back again to
black nearly threequarters of a million I
strong in the city of New York alone
But tho women are being cheated every
day by hundreds in buying for lisle thread
stockings that have no lisle in them You
cannot buy the genuine article for less than
50 cents a pair and that is a very inferior
quality and you must go to at least a dol
lar to get a good article The imitations
aro so skillfully made that it is easy to be
deceived the best plan is to be guided by I
tho prico and character of the store No
reputable dealer will sell the fictitious for
the real to an intelligent customer In
woolens so called there is half the time
Dot more than a fourth or a third of wool I
and this too has largely to be determined
by the price and the reputability of the
dealer Woolen stockings and socks sell I
from 10 cents up to S3 but if you buy for
much less than a dollar be sure you are get
ting some cotton The genuine serviceable I
and expensive kinds of woolen goods are
made of fine cashmere lambs wool Sax
I ony Germantown zephyr and other kinds I
vA large quantity of honest homely stock
ings spun and knitted in farm houses come
into the market and sell moderately They
really wear best of all and can bo readilly i
known A score of thousand pairs of so
called silk stockings for 75 cents Sl and
150 a pair aro sold hero every month but
they are only silk on the surface They are
the most flagrant sham of them all
FASHIONABLE WOMEN
sometimes got two to three dozen pairs
of all silk stockings each in a year throw
ing a pair that costs from f3 to 10 aside
after they are worn a few times The
maids get these < < or give them or sell them
10 mail iiiuuua vyiuci omen uuu tuere
aro a great many of these cannot bear to
throw away a highpriced pair of silk
stockings after some boles appear instead
they take their needle and their silk bob
bin and work into the hole a butterfly a
flower aba or some other artistic design
J After a few holes have been darned in this
way the stocking becomes a valuable piece
of bricabrac
For those interested in curious results I
may add that the stockings worn by the
women in Now YorK if fastened together
would make a row about 2000 miles long a
row longer than the Atlantic cable To
keep these 2000 miles of stockings in place
it requires about 400 miles of garters
The 800000 women and girls of the
metropolis all wear carters and it is not an
overestimate to allow two pairs each to
them in the year Scores of thousands of
them wear topsy garter which is nothing
more than a torn strip of cctton or flannel
and all those old ladies with antique no
tions especially if they were born iu the
country tear tho pink selvedge off tho flan
nel they buy for winter petticoats and
other winter undergarments A great
many of them do not think that it is either
lucky or proper to wear any other kind of
garter than those made from this selvedge
But this hardly affects the great garter
trade now which in the line of notions
is one of the most important branches iu
t New York city Let me give what can be
deduced from the actual commercial fig
ures Two pairs for each female at the
lowest price which is 10 cents reaches the
sum of 150000 Nearly every female big
and little with any pretensions to style
drops into the notion store or general dry
goods store aim gets
A PAIR OF CASTERS
from 10 cents upward The cheap ones are I
common cotton elastic but shop girls fac
tory girls and thousands of others fit up tho
plain band with dainty bows and rosettes of
blue pink crimson and other colors of silk
ribbon I
k While this general estimate holds good
there arc to be counted at least 2000 women
4 Including all varieties actresses who pay
from 250 to 30 and 550 a pair for garters
Average these at 10 each and the bill be
comes 20000 more But some of these are
not satistied with mere gold buckles with
their many scores of designs and countless
monograms nor with the oxydjzed silver
clasps at present so fashionable through
the town for garter decoration thoy must
ornament > > tho clasps with diamonds sap
phires emeralds rubies and even pearls I
L have seen half a dozen pairs belonging to
favorite dancers and other actresses the i l
clasps and setting ranging from 1150 to 5500
i pair Then a great many of these women
I ret the bands to match the colors of their f
lifferent suits of underwear Some are I
primrose pink turquoise blue robinegg
slue golden brown seal brown and on to
cfu Alluxpeasive garters are made of I
> J

silk elastic having on satin flowers or
other ornamentation applique or raised i
work Moreover tho fashion in garters I
is as variable as in anything else Some
arc named after tho different college colors
and worn by actresses and boarding school
misses alike according to their preferences
for this or that college or this or that baso
ball club
Another class of women with whom
EXPENSIVE AND BEAUTIFUL GARTERS
are a fat aro showy folk and even those not
very showy Counting these thousands a
largo garter dealer tells me that 30000 is
a low estimate to put to their account In
nthc = n1 tn en thn tntn1 n n c nto
for this city for one year the amount would I
not bo far short of 250000 Tie them all
together tho cotton and the flannel ones
tho plainelastic with tho gorgeous bands I
and wo have a string about four hundred
miles long that is worth O Why it
would support 500 families of 2500 souls
for a year
MAny thousands of Now York women
will no wear elastic garters it stops the I
circulation and makes the lower part of tho
leg unshapely lhe same objection though I
in a lesser degree applies to elastic bands
Then the latter kind are constantly unty
lag or slipping down which is tho chief
mark of slovenliness For this reason the
supporter is largely used and is made at
all prices from the simple cotton bands
and pendants to tho elaborate silk with
satin applique and every ornamentation
that the needle can devise The structure of j
these conveniences is 1 belt passing around I
tho waist to which is attached Vshaped or t
other kinds of pendants which grip the
stocking and hold it snugly l up in place
Supporters for children without the belt
are sold for 10 cents but those with the
belt may run from 5 cents to 50 With
gold and silver monogram clasps and
adorned with jewels they run up to prices I
almost fabulous Just to get an idea of tho
garter rage in Now York it is only neces
sary to go into any notion place from the I
little Bowery shop up and you need but
stop a moment before the fashionable
jewelers to have garters staring you in tho I
face There aro hundreds of mottoes in use I
among the wearers of expensive garters
the most common being the device on the I
English decoration of the Order of the Gar
