Count App nye leader of the

k Kalnocy minister of foreign af
fairs whether or not the government had
u information of attempts of Russians in
4 the United States to convert Hungarian
immigrants to panslavism At the same
time he demanded that several Hun
garian consuls be sent to America to look
after interests of Hungarian residents
Count Ealnoky in reply said inquiry
as to Danslavist agitation would be
mado by the government which thus far
had no knowledge of its existence lJn
doubtedly the subject might be of im
portance as in 1892 there were more than
80000 emigrants from the empire to the
United States
Deputy Czesnatory opposed the investi
gation suggested by Count Apponye
The great distance of tho United States
from central Europe he said precluded
the possibility of agitation supposing
it existed could result in any action
within the empire

OGDEN June 3Speejal Henry
Whetstone deputy United States mar
shal was this afternoon arraigned in
Judge Miners court for sentence having
been found guilty of contempt of court I
After several motions had been overruled
and a petition asking that sentence bo
deferred on account of the alleged ill
health of the defendant had been thrown
out the court sentenced TOietstono to
three months imprisonment in the terri
torial penitentiary He was taken to Salt
Lake tonight
Whetstones offense consisted in spirit
ing away George Craig very important
witness in the John Hopkins adultery
case Braig was present for several days
during tho setting of the grand jury of
the February term but when his name
was called as a witness he was nowhere to
be found Suspicion attached to Whet
stones and subsequent investigations re
called the fact that the exdeputy had re
ceived 100 from Hopkins as pay for his
services in the latters behalf and the
prosecution claim that part of the money
went to bribe Craig to leave the country
It was known that Whetstone and Craig
were together just before the departure
of the Southern Pacific train upon which
the missing witness took passage for the
west It is possible that habeas corpus
proceedings may be begun before the su
preme court of the territory in behalf of
the exdeputy I
William Garland and his senior attor
ney S B Ladd of Kansas City arrived
in Ogden this morning and the sale of
the Bear river canal system which was
made last week under the foreclosure of
the 100000 deed of trust held by the
JarvisConklin Mortgage Trust company
may be again opened Something sensa
tional may develop
The drill at the gas well had reached a
depth of thirtyfive feet when operations
were stopped tonight The pipe Is now
in a stratum of close gravel and driving
is very difficult
The members of the Ogden Shot Gun
club are preparing for their contemplated
match with the Salt Lake team and
should the contest take place some good
scores may be expected It is said the
Salt Lake boys are anxious to clear their
record I
THE BEAR RIVER CANAL TRANSFER
The instruments for the transfer of the
Bear River canal system to H M Jarvis
and George L Walker were placed on
record in the office of the county recorder
this evening The purchase price of the
entire system including the Idaho prop
erty is 100000 It seems that the sale of
the Idaho branch of the canal was made
at Paris Ida on May 19 H M Jarvis
being the purchaser and the purchase
price 12500
C E Mayneis still absent in tho east
and will not return for some time He is
supnosed to be in Omaha in consultation
witE the gentlemen who are to put up
the capital for the construction of the
power plant and the completion of the
HendersonBrinker electric street railway
It is expected that upon his return active
operations upon the plant will commence
The Reed hotel will probably bo closed
for keeps as the interested parties do not
seem to be able to reach an agreement of
any kind Mr Rieslinc is in Oregon
He went away on Thursday a very much
disgusted man Several propositions
were made by him bat none have so far
been accepted
HOT COMPETITION IN ICE
At 1 oclock this afternoon the ma
chinery at the ice plant was started for
the purpose of manufacturing ice and by
Monday the first ice ever manufactured
in Ogden will be placed upon the market
The plant is one of the most complete in
the west and has a daily cauacity of fifty
tons when running at its full limit It
has cost in the neighborhood of 50000
The chances ior a lively ice war this sum
mer seem very favorable as the natural
Ice men say they whl so undersell the ice
plant and that the latter will not be in it
with them As a result the public will
et ice very cheap
The special erecting engineer of the
Southern Pacific reached Ogden this
morning and will at once assume control
of the erection of the companys shops
A ONELEGGED TRIP
Frank S Beedleson the young one
legged man who left San Francisco on
May 15th to cover the distance between
the latter city and New York in a hun
dred days on a bicycle reached Ogden to
night five days ahead of his schedule time
He vows he has conscientiously covered
the distance between this city and San
Francisco and has propelled himself thus
far across the continent without aid from
any source except his good right leg The
I trip has been devoid of special feature
aud the nervy bicyclist has met with no
accidents He will leave for New York in
the mornin and expects to cover thedis
tance in considerably less than the speci
fied time Speaking to THE HERALD man
he said This is my first long journey
heretofore only runs I have taken have
not exceeded sixty milesbut have always I
been in fine health and feel confident
that I can ride the distance The mount
I use weighs about thirtythree pounds
28inch wheels with corrugated tires
The wheel is fitted with two gears with
separate sprockets on each side of the I
frame For level riding 1 use thd fifty I
six gear and by simply changing the
chain to the other sprocket wheel can re
duce it to the forty gear for hill climb
ing This is necessary on account of the
long ddad center I have to contend with
by reason of having only one leg I go
fully prepared for any accident
STOLEN GOODS RECOVERED
This morning the police recovered the
goods stolen from Kuhns store on Thurs
day night and one of the men who com
mitted tho burglary was this afternoon
bound over to the grand jury in bonds of
51000 while one of the others is now con
fined to the dark hole of the city jail
in the hopes that he will follow the exam
ple of his partner in crime Martin the
fellow who has been judicially dealt with
was placed in the dark holeJ where he
remained until an early hour this morn
ing when he made known his willingness
to locate the hiding tilace of the stolen
goods and accompanied by Acting Mar
shal Brown he went down near tho Utah
and Northern bridge and found the goods
where ho and his pals had hidden them in
thc brush Aboutll oclock the officials at
Kaysville notified tho police that last
night two young fellows went through
the hotel there and had been arrested On
their oersons was found a lot of Handker
chiefs and other gents furnishings and
it Is thought they arc the others impli
cated in the Kuhn burglary An officer
will be sent down to JKaysville to identify
the property
A SHOTGUN CAPTURE

KAYSVILLE June 3A couple of rather
boyish looking individuals put up at the I
Manselt house last evening taking a
room next to one occupied by N ti Sb el
field This morning after Mr Sheffield i
had gone towork they entered his room I
divested themselves ol their own soiled I
linen anddonned the more genteel apparel
of Mr Sheffield After appropriating
everything of valuethat was accessable I
v
= 2
they started for the depot with tie evi
dent intention of taking the 10 oclock
train for Salt lake But they had misJudged I
Judged the time and missed the train
Meanwhile the police had been notified
and so had Mr Sheffield and the latter
lost no time in procuring a
shotgun and starting in hot pursuit I
He soon overtook the culprits but they
did not take kindly to being arrested so
Sheffield brought his shotgun persuader
into play After the second shot they
gave up and were held until the police
arrived j when they were escorted to the
city jail They gave their names as
Henry Becker and Leland Young A
number of keys watch chains cuff but
tons etc were found in their possession
Though young in years thev seemed to
be thoroughly hardened in sin I
They were given a hearing before Jus I
tice Gailey at 4 oclock this afternoon i
when they pleaded guilty and were held
to await the grand jurys action
It Is stated this evening that they are
probably wanted in Ogden to answer to a
charge of burglary

Another Reduction to Missouri Hirer
Points and Chicago
>
A nil Slash In Most Rates to the Sea
boarcl Symptoms of a
Big Fight
I I
The railway prophets have fallen into
disrepute For the last month theknow
ing ones about the Salt Lake offices have
been predicting a readjustment on a
firmer and a higher basis and every pre
diction of a raise has been followed by a
cut Great things were expected from
the Chicago meeting and just as every
thing seemed in shape for an advance all
along the line comes the announcement
from the Union Pacific of a tremendous
shave on oneway east bound rates from
Utah points
The Union Pacific officials announced
last evening that on next Tuesday a big
reduction would be made on one way
iratclass tickets from Salt Lake City to
Missouri river points St Louis and Chi
cago The rate to Denver remains at
513 to Missouri river reduced to 2550
to St Louis 2j to Chicago 3475 The
Denver rate one month ago was 25 and
the Chicago rate 55253 These new rates
are breed by tfie cut from Denver The
rate from the latter city to the river has
been reduced to 12 to St Louis e19
and to Chicago 2115
Tho Rio Grande Western has made no
announcement but it is believed thatthe
above rates will be promptly met as its
Denver connections are responsible for
the cut
Now let a 50 six months Worlds fair
rate with stop over privileges be estab
lished and the public will havo no cause
to complain
A WOOL ItATE WAR
Tho Union Pacific Makes a Discovery and
a Big Cut
There are unmistakable symptoms of a
little flurry in Utah wool rates In fact
the first gun in the war has been fired and
the result is a cut of 41 cents per 100 from
southern Utah to the Atlantic sea board
The rate on baled wool from Utah com
mon pol nts to the seaboard has been 226
A short time ago the Rio Grande West
