Standard Accuracy
The Standard had a burst of indig
nation yesterday over an inaccuracy
appearing In The Herald to the effect
that a majority of the sinners of the
Republican pledge had been defeated
for election Six of the 11 signers ap
pear to be elected as The Herald re i
turns showed However a paper that j i
announced Taylors election in the
Third ward by a majority of over 100 1
shows rather bad taste in making such
grimaces over a slight inaccuracy
The Herald is not popular with the
StarJard nor is it trying to be nor
does its writers have to point out the
shortcomings of the Standard Other
papers may do that as for instance i
the Commonwealth in the following
As uv go to press we see that the
Standard of this morning wriggles a
good deal as to how the defeat of Mr j
Driver happened and attempts to lo
cate all the blame outride of the Stan
dard office but in this the people do not
seem to coincide with the Standard
The Standard seemed to pay anost
attention to the election of Mr Driver
and he was defeated It gave attention
next to Mr Hulaniskis election and
his majority falls far short of the gen
eral ticket The Standards support
was evidently damaging

Earthquake at Butte
Butte Miner There wa a severe
earthquake shock in the city this
morning at about 225 and all the
I buildings in the city shook in a way
to alarm all who happened to be awake
at the time and it is safe to say that
thousands of persons in various parts
of the city were awakened from their
slumbers by the trembling of tho
earth
The shock lasted five or 43ix seconds
and in some of the business blocks the
windows shook and for a time it looked
as though some of the buildings would
fall down All along the business streets
people rushed out of doors in many
cases not fully realizing just what the
trouble was
At the store of the Montana Liquor
company on East Broadway a number
of bottles were toppled over from the
shelves and broken on the floor
At the Blue Jay mine the shock had
the peculiar effect of raising the sarety I
and letting Qit
valves on the boilers I
the steam in five separate jerks In all
the mines on the hill the shock was
distinctly felt and in some instances
loose earth from the walls fell down m
the workings j
Police Captain Dawson was passing j
a lodging house on Main street when
the trouble began He heard the win j
dows rattle and felt the ground trem
ble and at first the captain thought
some one was making a rough house
of the place but a second later he re
alized that it was an earthquake
The shock startled the fire horses m
the city hall and they walked about
uneasily in their stalls Sol iLevy was
counting some bail money m the city
sail and thought that some one was
blowing up the building with dynamite
A number of brick fell from the un
finished walls of the new Bee Hive
block on Broadway
A Combination Apple
Boise Statesman Captain Bledsoe
has brought in another curiosity it is j
what may bs termed a combination
apple It looks like a Baldwin on one
side and something like a winesap on j
he other The two parts are joined
by an irregular line having the appear
ance of a suture
The captain secured this apple an
Pine valley There are four trees there
tearing the same kind of fruit all of
the apples frorh them being of the same
general appearance The fruit had j I
partly been gathered when the captain
visited the orchard and several graun I
sacks were filled with it I
The apples are large and luscious 1 i
They are certainly curious The cap
tain says they are called a hybrid by I
the owner of the orchard but what the i
influence was that induced this porno
logical marriage Is a mystery i
The Statesman has notbeen able to
determine whether the two sides of the
apole differ in flavor as there is only i
one specimen here and it is not desired
to cut it The curiosity as at the Nya j

is authentic and is quietly vouched j I

it needs no argument to establish the j I

It is an inside fact that the reason the
Northern Pacific has not completed its
Lewiston extension ere this was on ac
count of a traffic agreement whereby
the Oregon Railway Navigation
company was not to be disturbed in its
Lewiston business in consideration of
equal concessions to the Northern Pa
cific In the Puget sound country The
agreement however was merely tern
porary and terminable at the pleasure
of either party The Northern Pacific
has found that it had the small end of

retrieve its mistake and to get into
Lewiston with all diligence
