PASSENGER TRAIN
COMPLETES TRIP
First Train Arrives From San
Francisco on Western
Pacific
CARRIES HIGH OFFICIALS
MANY IMPROVEMENTS WILL BE
MADE AT LOCAL TERMINAL
The first train that ever came from
San Francisco over the Western Pacific
got Into Salt Lake at 23 ocock yester
day afternoon Lke I came without any cere
mony A few Rio Grande engineers
whistles as greeting but the locomotive
did not have any decorations There was
have decoratons
not even a tiny flag on the hedlght and
I tny fab
the only champagne bottles broken was
when the negro waiter dropped them In
the buffet car
The train brought C H Schlacks vic
presIdent of the Western Pacific H M
Levey general manager and D F Evans
general auditor and V G Bogue chief
Schiacks private car a
engineer Mr Schlack
tUnIng ear and a baggage coach and the
locomotive comprised the traIn lessr8
Schiacks and Levey hurried to the city
ticket offices of the Denver Rio Grande
tcket ofics
where they spent the afternoon In con
sidering freight tariffs and general op
rating problems s
ratng shall open freight traffic Dec 1 or
a day or two thereafter said Mr Levey
Passenger traffic will be postponed for
awhile We shall probably begin carry
awl11e
lug some passengers abut Jan 1 but the I
through passenger trains may not be put
on until April
prl
Although we found the Western Pa
cific Ia splendid shape there are always
a number of problems to b solved In
opening a new road and we believe they
will be best solve by running freight
trains until wc see what time they make
and what If any difficulties they encoun
ter We made our trip very leisurely and
found that the entire road Is at this mo
lnlnt ready to take trains from here to
San Fnncsc Ye have submlttt our
tariffs to the interstate commerce corn
tarlfs and will have everything In read
mess to ace pt freight for Pacific coast
points Dee 1 Of course we shan con
tinul to run the mixed trains from here
to Elko as we have been doing until the
through trains are put on
While there are a number of appoint
ments to be made they will be announced
from our general offices In the Mills
bulldin In San Francisco We shall not
make any appointment while we are
here We leave Thursday afternoon for
San Francisco
11 Schlacls said that the trip over
the road was a revelation to him He be
Ilves that some of the most attractive
scenery In the wet Is on the Western
Pacific This with the low grades Insur
Ing fast time and the magnificent equip
meat which has been ordered will make
thE line one of the most popular In the
Inihd States 11 Schlacks said that
during the entire trip the party lived In
his private car and stopped wherever they
wanted to Inspect anything consequent
thE trip took almost a week
While neither of the two high officials
of the Western Pacific would say so It
became known ysterday that the Denver
Rio Grande and the Western Pacific
wi establish big shops and roundhouses
here Salt Lake will be the biggest divi
sion point on the two roads and work for
the Denver Rio Grande that Is now
being done at Ogden will be done In Sal
Lake I Is understood that the Denver
Rio Grandes 1m from here to Og
den will be regarded as a branch line
and of course all the traffic possible will
be diverted from It Arrantements have
alreadY been made with Pacific steam
ship companies to bring Seattle passen
gers to San Francisco and rout them
over the Western Pacific and Rio Grande
Instead of sending them out on the Oregon
gon Short Line to Ogden which Is the
present practice
This Is one of the reasons why the
Western Pacific does not want to open
passenger traffic m the beginning of the
winter Denver Rio Grande conue
tons are bound to be late during the
winter and no mater how prompt the
Western Pacific was the trains would be
rt > hours and days late getting Into
San Francisco Also the Denver Rio
Grands neds all its equipment during the
winter and the new equipment for the
ester Pacific will not be ready before
spring Before returning to San Fran
cisco Iessrs Schlacks and Lee1 will In
w1
poct the new depot and look aver sites
for the big shops which are to be erected
here In the near future

Whereabouts
A S Johnson of Denver and his bride
of three days are again reunited and
happy The reunion came about at Og
den yesterday afternoon after the frantic
husband had appealed to the Salt Lake
police telling them that his wife bad left
the Overland Limited at the Sal Lake
depot Tuesday afternoon Johnson spent
the greater part of Tuesday night march
Ing for his bride In Salt Lake Yester
day morning he again appeared at the
police station where he was Informed
that no clue had been found
Short before noon yesterday a tele
phone messag came to the police head
quarters tram Ogden asking If any In
formation had been given them of John
son Lieutenant Shannon answered that
Information had ben received hourly
and that a haIrazd husband was seek
Ing his wife here The voice then sweet
ly informed the lieutenant that Mrs
Johnson was speaking and that she had
met a friend In the Ogden depot and
miesed her train while her husband was
busy playing cards In the smoking car
Johnson was unaware that his wife had
left the train at the Ogden depot and
was sure he had seen her occupying the
seat with another man shortly before
the train reached Salt Lake He said
his wife was nearsighted and had prob
ably mistaken the other man for himself
The police here have now formed another
theory on the sbject of nearsightedness
Johnson left for Ogden soon after the
telephone message was received and at
4 oclock telephoned to Lieutenant Shan
non that he had found his wife He
thanked the police for their assistance
and said they Intended leaving for Los
