IMPETUS CHINO
Invasion of New Mexico by
Modern Operators Starts
a New Era
great future for some of the oldest
mining districts In Americathose of
southwestern New Medcois predicted
J y a writer In the Mining World as a re
ult ot the longdelaed application of
moder methods to the prosecution ot
mining enterprises ot that region This
artlcularly applies to the Santa Rita die
net III which Mexicans have been mln
I g highgrade copper since the year 100
nd In which now the Chino Copper com
ny Is developing a great lowcost pro
luer which Is to be In the class of Utah
opper and Ray Consolidated
The camp Is a revelation says the writ
f for after having been the scene of
mining operations for more than 100 years
Hut only are the surface deposits not yet
worked out but rQcent development work
a proven the continuance of the ore to
jepth not hitherto believed
The Chino Copper company took charge
of the Santa Rita mines last March It
proceded at once to prospect thoroughly
the ore bodies ot the valley Eight Cy
clone drilling machines were put to work
lp to October 1 these machines had
drilled over 20 holes The valley was cut
up Into squares the sides of which were
iou feet long The holes were drilled at
the corners of these squares without ru
golrd to where the comers happened to be
Some of the holes had to go through the
Immense dumps before striking the rock
Borne were drilled In the middle of roads
but all showed ore
Ore In Unexpected Places
H was thus proven that the ore ex
tcndd In directions where heretofore no
ore had been even suspected to exist In
< ill places where shatts had heretofore
been sunk the copperItained yellow porphyry
hyry had cropped out To the north
where the greenstained rock was buried
under the surface soil no work of any
Importance had been done But the drlll
era proved the existence of ore In the
most unexpected places
One hole went through ore for SOO feet
Annther hole drilled opposite the Santa
Rita house alongside the road struck a
deposit of mostly native copper SO feet
through This deposit 15 perhaps only 300
flt from the old Santa Rita shaft the
oldest shaft In the camp and the com
pany at once proceeded to drift for this
deposit which at the time of my visit had
been reached and the shots ot the miners
below could be heard plainly while sitting
on the veranda of the eating house As a
result of this work It is I estimated that
there is now In sight a body of 6000000
tons ot ore averaging about 24 per cent
npper
Since the present management took hold
the old mlll which for nine years ran
day and night on dump are has been used
exclusively for test runs With three
shifts a day four test runs are made
cvr month For each run ore from a
different part ot the camp Is selected
Tn old mill has been described before
and It need be said only that the machln
cry consists of a crusher dry and wet
rolls that the ore Is jigged Immediately
after leaving the crusher to eliminate the
large quantities of native copper and
that after being rolled the pulp goes to
Iltley tables the slimes from which are
run over sllmers and the talllngs from
tbsp go to a settling tank
Native Copper on Tables
When the ore tested is mainly native
Olpr a streak of the mineral a foot
ldE can be seen running off the VB
flps When the ore is sulphide the
streak at concentrates Is not 50 wide
The problem of saving the values in the
slimes which after leaving the VTlltleys
4 especially with the sulphide ores some
limes contaln as high as 35 per cent 15
now believed to have been solved Two
dirterEnt kinds of sllmers were tried but
both proved unsuitable one because of
onstructlonal weakness the other be
cause ot the character of the ore About
six weeks ago four Frue vanners of the
Johnston type were installed and these
I1T said to give excellent satisfaction
When the work of prospecting the camp
has been completed and the test runs
have been brought to a conclusion it Is
the Intention of the management to Install
a concentrating plant of 2000 tons capac
Ity The question ot a smelter has not
et been considered At present the con
centrates are shipped to the smelter at
Douglas
The company is employing about 400
men At the time of my visit the shaft
being workEd was the old Santa Rita
nur the mill The Hearst shaft on the I
opposite or southeastern side of the val
le had been placed In good order but
was not in operation The company con
trols every foot of ground as far as the
e e can reach and also owns claims north
and south ot the village
Leasers Yet Working
ThEre are a number of leases In ex
istence which had been made long before
the present company took hold and
which have so far not been disturbed It
Is however the Intention of the company
to abolish the leasing system entirely as
soon as the preliminary work of devel
opment shaH have been concluded The
leasErs work mainly In shafts of shallow
depth mostly with whims though some
windlasses are In use Others are work
Ing In an open cut which first went
through he dump but which now has
reached the rock The ore Is hauled by
stram power up an incline track All the
leasers first handsort the C and then
handjig the remainder
The impetus given to coppe PIning In
Grant county by the vigor with which the
C Uno Copper company Is prosecuting Its
work has been further accelerated by re
cent transactions in the Burro mountains
One result of this copper excitement as
It may properly bE called was that at the
recent saIl In foreclosure CJt the Comanche
Copper company more than one bidder
appeared much to the surprise of the old
owners Furthermore many rumors ot
other Impending deals are In circulation
One of these was that a company had
been formed to prospect for copper with
churn drills In the old silver camp ot
Georgetown some 12 mlles east of Santa
Rita Prospecting of this nature has be
come very popular and such work Is now
t going on on the west slope of the Pinos
Altos mountain where copper deposits
mixed more or less with zinc are known
to exist

SILVER PEAK TO

Operations Planned Include
Mining Gold Ore With
Steam Shovel
Tile holdings of the Silver Peak Val
calda Gold Mining company have been I
purchased from Samuel Newhouse and
associates by Interests friendly to the
PlttsburgSllver Peak Mining company
and Its twelve patented claims will be
vigorously developed The PlttsburgSIl
vel Peak company has working ground
adjoining the Valcalda property on the
north west and south and the acquirIng
of the latter companys holdings was a
logical business move says the Blair
Press The deal became effective a few
das ago
Surveys have been made for a tunnel
that when It is completed will connect
the upper workings of the Silver Peak
mine with those of the Valcalda group
This tunnel will not only permit econom
ical handling ot Valcalda ores but will
also present a means for developing the
holdings of the Silver Peak company lying
to the west of the Yalcalda It will con
nect with the main haulage facilities ot
the Silver Peak company
To Use Steam Shovel
Arrangements are now being made to
handle a large portion of the tonnage of
the Silver Peak property by means of a
steam shovel This Idea Is somethIng that
is entirely new In a mine operated for
precious metals Steam shovels have been
used In large open workings In copper
properties but this Is the first instance
we have ever heard ot their use In oper
ating a gold mine It will give one an Idea
ot the magnitude ot the ore bodies now
beIng exploited by the PittsburgSilver
Peak company and of the efficient man
agement of the present administration
With Its economical extraction of ore
by means of the latest laborsaving equip
ment and with the economical reduction
afforded by Its splendid modern mill the
PittsburgSilver Peak company Is certain
to bo one of the most prominent factors
in the mining industry of Nevada
MONARCH IN LINE

Seven Troughs Company
Starts Systematic Devel
opment of Estate
The Seen Troughs Monarch Mining
company which has taken over the hold
Ings of the IferoNevada Mines com
pan near Farrell has commenced op
erations on a scale which presages big
things In the near future Work Is being
prosecuted both In the tunnel on the Lit
tle Hero and In the shaft on the Wild
Cat says the Seven Troughs Jliiner
In the Little Hero tunnel the men arc
crosscutting from the south drift to the
contact and at the same time driving the
drift The face of the tunnel Is in ore
which Is being put in the bins for ship
ment
In the Wild Cat shaft they are driving
a drift to the north on the eightyfoot
level with every Indication of encounter
ing a good body of ore
Instead of continuing the tunnel which
was projected to cut the Hillside vein
which has been opened up about midway
between the Little Hero and Wild Cat
workings the company has about con
cluded to sink a working shaft between
thE Little Hero tunnel and the Hillside
shan It Is expected to start work on
the shaft with as large a force as can
be worked shortly after the first ot the
month This shaft will be sunk to a deptH
of 300 feet before laterals are run and
with development at that depth a large
body of are should be opened
P No Marker ot Lovelock In doing his
annual work has opened up considerable
ore on the Blue Bird which adjoins the
Little Hero on the west and he also has
an exceptional showing on the Sunflower
which lies within a few hundred feet of
the Monarch ground on the east
The Monarch compans holdings are
considered among the best In the north
end of the district In fact the discovery
ot highgrade at the grass roots on the
ground two years ago caused a stam
pede to that end ot the district

EXPERT WRONG ABOUT
OHIO COPPER OUTPUT
The reputation for accuracy of George
L Walker the Boston Commercials cop
per expert makes more glaring his error
of figures relating to the prospective pro
duction ot OhIo Copper and coming from
such a source the wrong statement Is
likely to be to some extent damaging
Speaking of the bringing In of the Ohio
companys new concentrator which is
now being accomplished Mr Walker
says Only a few hundred tons of ore will be
treated dally at the start but In a short
time its output will be up to 1000 tons a
day resulting In production ot 7000000 or
more pounds of cppper annually
The facts are that the company will
start treating 600 and 700 tons a day in
one ot the four sections ot its mill and
while the nominal capacity of the mill
Is 2400 tons a day the management ex
peels when It Is fully In commission to
treat 3000 tons of ore a day makIng a
copper production close to 2000000 pounds
a month
