gold and silver values as well as cop

The ore was encountered at the depth

depth the bottom of the shaft was en

the body Is a large one The high values
tarried by the ore at that horizon is re

Ore as Good asjAny in Vein
Is Found in Footwall
Recent development in the mine of
the Gold Chief Mining company in
the old Chief district near Pioche
make it apparent that the ore body is
many times larger than had been sup
posed Whi t was believed to be a flat
vein eight j fifteen feet wide which
had been followed by an inclined shaft
appears to be only a rib of quartz
within a great vt deal vein several
hundred feet wide
The first evidence of this was dis
covered when a winme sunk from the
inclined shaft into the supposed foot
wall broke into ore as good as any
of that in the socalled vein Then
surface prospecting revealed ore wher
ever holes were sunk through the sev
eral feet ft wash which covers the
great zone
The general average of the ore ex
posed in the Gold Chief mine has been
figured at 10 a ton but moat of the
ore lately uncovered runs higher than
that Returns from mill tests of the
ore just made in Portland how a
saving of 97 per cent of the values by
eyanlding M C Godbe manager of
the Centennial Pioche Mining company
who returned to the city yesterday
from camp believes that the Gold Chief
has the making of one of the great
cyaniding propositions of the country
The company was recently formed
by Lloyd Cook and associates to take
over the Chief mines The company
has been financed for the making of
extensive improvements including the
i Installing of a cyanide plant of 100
I tons daily capacity and that without
drawing upon the companys treasury

for Merger
Latest copper consolidation news
from New York is that the Guggen
helms are making progress in effect
ing a merger not only of Utah Cop
per and Boton Consolidated but with
Nevada Consolidated and possibly Ohio
topper In the combine as well
The four companies will make a com
bined yearly output of approximately
180000000 pounds of copper at a cost
of about 8 cents a pounda prod ac
tion which would compare favorably
with that of any combination of prop
erties which could be brought about by
the ColeRyan people or even by
Should the QuggenheimE be able to
effect such a consolidation it would
place them in a commanding position
when It comes to making term with
the greater copper merger They oonld

These dividend announcements call
Ing for distribution in the agrgegate
of 206580 during December by five
Tintic mining companies were made at
meetings of directors of the various
companies held yesterday In Provo
Colorado and Iron Blossom I 1 gen
erally believed will be paying rather
more than conditions of their treas
uries and mines warrant a point hay
ing been strained perhaps in consid
eration of the needs of stockholders
in closing up endoftheyear business
Neither company will accordingly be
expected to pay a dividend in Jan
uary with the probability that Colo
rados disbursement will b perma
nently reduced and that Iron Blossom
will not in the future pay to exceed
4 cents a month
Conserve Cash Surplus
With no official announcement upon
the subject the Impression had gone
I I abroad that Grand Central on account
of having collected the major portion
of Us 170000 judgment against the
Mammoth Mining company would post
a Christmas dividend of 10 cents a
share I was also believed that Vic
I toria would resume paying dividends at
the old rate of 4 cents a share with
3 cents the minimum forecasted But
of those
the action of the directors
companies indicates that they favor
conserving a large cash surplus to
provide for possible contingencies and
that the decision was that they should
start paying at a rate that they were
assured of being able to maintain
Sioux Consolidated is expected to
continue paying dividends for some
months to come with the rate left
After disappointing delay occasioned by
the strong flow of g in the bottom of
its shaft the Tintic Standard company
has completed the work of cutting a sta
tion at the 700foot level A cage was
du to arrive on th ground yesterday
and as soon as that Is installed drifting
will b started both north and south The
gas escapes strong from between crevices
in the quartz particularly on the south
side of the shaft The quarts bears every
evidence of being connected with ore and
it is believed that when the source of the
gas is found a body of ore will b disclosed

Build Smelter
That the Salt Lake Copper company
which recently turned Its Tel cpr
mine over to len has purchased large
eonto of tb famous Iron Dyke prop
Dye pop
erties in Seven Devils district and that
the Lewisohns who own the Salt Lake
Copper are arranging to build a smelter
at some point on th Snake river con
venient for receiving ore from the mines
of that region is the report which comes
from Baker City Ore
The Lewisohns it is said have closed
Th Lw 81 c
a long term contract with Ihe Seven Dev
ils Copper company to treat the ores
from the Arkansas mine and that they
have even further Interest in that prop
erty 1 indicated by W B Fisher man
ager of the Skit Lake Copper company
having been made a director and consult
ing engineer of the Seven Devils Copper
Following the closing of th deal Mr
Fisher left con for Homestead
lef Ber
where h has assumed charge of the Iron
Dyk mine and Is lookinp after the plat
m and the i
ting of the town of Homestead th
building of houa
Mr Fishers activity I taken to mean
that the Iron Dyke deal i practically
completed and that th Lewisohns have
assumed charge of that great min al
though it I understood in mining circles
not be entirely consum
that the deal will nt 1 etily cnum
mated until the first of th year This
I sale I I said calls for 1000000 for a
fourfifth Interest in the property and
the expenditure of I 0 in develop
mnt Assures Ore for Smelter
With the Lewiaohns in control of the
Iron Dyke owning the Ironsides which
they purchased for fluxes lessees of toe
McDougal group and controlling th out
put of the Ark there seems to b
pu question that they have secured a
guarantee of th 3 tons of ore daily
warrant building the smelter
necesUfery to warrnt th selt
er It is expected within a year to build
the smelter and that it will b ready for
operation Just as soon as the Ox Bow
people are ready to furnish power At
the same time there will b built an ele
tb sam tme
trio railway together with aerial trams
trc raiway
for feeders running from Landore to th
smelter site on the Snake river
Imeler the deal with th Salt Lake Cop
per company was completed the Seven
Devils Copper company completed the
vls CopPr
purchase of the Arkansaw and other
properties which it had under bond from
the Idaho Copper company of which
was president
John F Steele was prealdnt
As the result of these deals Manager
Fred N Smith of the Arkansaw prop
erty will put on a force of twentyfive
of the
men at once for the development
property on an extensive scale
With an indifferent saving of values
the test run of Consolidated lease ore
recently made in the Preston Hunting
ton mill at Seven Troughs showed re
turns of 26 a ton With a mill de
signed to treat the ore there is believed
to be no question that the lease could
enter upon a long period of profitable
Already opened In the lease between
an upraise and a wlnse from the tun
nel is ore of the estimated value of
40000 and there is no question that
development would expose a large ad
ditional tonnage
Work of developing a spring on the
property which i is believed can be
made to afford a supply ample for mill
requirements is now under wajv
