ROCK ISLAND WENT I
UP AND THEN DOWN
Most Sensational Episode oi
the Year in the Stock
Market
CAUSE NOT ASCERTAINED
GENERAL LIST WITHSTOOD THE
SHOCK AND THEN RALLIED
New York Dec roThe Rock Island
episode ID todays stock market afforded
cm I opportunity to test the stability of the
I1 tsent speculative position
The resisting power shown to the alarm
1ig intinaiiiins carried by the sensational
gyrations in the Hock Island stocks served
is assurance that the present position i
Lot easl vulnerable There was a dread
that quiet liquidation might have ben
suing i n which would b followed after a
tertuin tage by withdrawal of support
fcd abas donment of values to the natural
Jlay of turns
in I SOme stocks where there has been a
persistence in speculative activity since
tiH general market has grown quiet
there was a hasty unloading of stocks
tad a sharp break in prices The gen
f rat list however stood up well under the
fhock and then rallied The conclusion is
rtd that the heavy tone last week was
ie to a pause in the activity of the spec
iiiiion foi a rise rather than to any ac
tie pressure to sell stocks
Whatever xplanation may b made of
the Rock Island episode the movement
of the stock was sufficiently extraordi
nary A rise of 314 points in five min
utes of a railroad stock having a substan
tial volume and a widely disseminated
market Is I a raie occurrence in stock mar
ket history When it is followed in al
most a litt time by a complete relapse
It may bt said to be almost without precedent
Attempted explanations of the movement
vire widely varied and in some cases
fantastic Recent heavy sales of calls
cti tie stock by foreign stock speculators
rtnd the purchases by them according to
their rule ot half the amount required
t > meet the contract undoubtedly played
r part in the condition
The conviction grew that a miscarriage
c > r the market management of the stock
lias as much to do as anything with the
nedlfylns > spectacle of its performance
That management has involved lavish
outlay of resources and a very free play
M I manipulative forces Instead of the
lisual cartfully calculated balance of such
trces today there seemd to have ben
n recklrss blundering upheaval in one
caireetioti without the intended effect on
the other sul An error by a subordinate

mas festivities offered to account for i
fnia explanation or its corollaries found
more gene rat aeptance than rumors of

delivery advanced 3c higher here today

owing to a stampede short Othr de
liveries also made good gains
The advance of more than 3 cents in
the December delivery occurred In the
final half of the day and enlivened an
otherwise rather listless market There
was little of the December option on sale
at any time and fair demand for that
month by a leading commission house
started a wild scramble among shorts to
cover which resulted in th price Jump
