Special to The HeraldRepublican
New York March 26More American
Collars will be poured into the depleted
coffers of European nobility on Tuesday
luxt when Miss Harriet Daly the beau
tiful and accomplished daughter of the
late copper king Marcus Daly will be
married to Count Anton Sigray head of
the ancient Hungarian family of that
name at her home on Fifth avenue In
cidentally the affair will mark the be
8inlnS of n series of fashionable weddings
that are to be celebrated during the spring
tI reason Including that of Margaret Gould
nnd Anthony Drexel Jr
Miss Dalys wedding however will be
a comparatively quiet affair despite the
iittendarce of New Yorks most select
nnd several representatives of the Hun
garian nobility On account of the dif
ference in their religion Miss Daly being
n Protestant and her fiance a Catholic
the customary church ceremony with Its
attendant brilliance will be supplanted by
a quiet but dignified home wedding which
will take place at the Daly mansion No
735 Fifth avenue Miss Daly has dis
pensed with bridesmaids but the count
will be attended by the Marquis Palla
ylncl
Result of a Romance
The marriage of this beautiful heiress
to the Hungarian nobleman is the culmi
nation of a romance which began two
years ago at the wedding of Cpunt
iSzechenyl and Miss Gladys Vanderbilt
On this occasion Count Sigray who Is a
distant cousin of Count Szechenyl acted
BS his best man Possessing an excellent
physique with a fair complexion and
steel gray eyes he made a striking pic
ture In his brlllant uniform trimmed with
lace and gold and far outshone the
groom During the reception at the Van
1 derbilt mansion following the ceremony
lie met Miss Daly and paid her marked
attention For two weeks he remained In
New York and devoted most of his time
40 the beautiful heiress during this perl
Ins Harriet Daly Daughter of the late I
Copuer Icing and her fiance Count
Anton Mjjray Who Are to De Married
on Tuesday March 29
od The following summer he met her
abroad and renewed his attentions and
last summer they again met at the wed
ding of Miss Anita Stewart to the Prince
de Braganza in Scotland
Count Anton Is the head of one of the
oldest and wealthiest families in Hun
gary although as the count himself ad
mits his income Is small when compared
with American standards He Is a large
land owner and as such is a member of
the House of Magnates His title dates
back to 17SO his ancestors being among
the nobles who helped Empress Maria
Theresa preserve her throne Both his
parents are dead but he has two older
sisters living one being the Marquise San
Mayano who married an Italian and lives
in Rome and the other the Baroness
Schell who lives in Hungary
As the counts wife Miss Daly will
enjoy the full privileges of her rank and
will be entitled to entrance at the Buda
pest court but not to that of Vienna
Where the count alone will be welcome
Marries Wealthy Girl
On the other hand the count is marry
Ing one of the wealthiest girls in the coun
try Miss Daly is about 24 years Old be
ing the youngest child of the famous min
er Her share of her fathers estats alone
is estimated at 2500000 She is a tall
striking brunette and a talented musi
cian
That Count Sigray resents the Intima
tion that he is marrying Miss Daly for
her fortune is Indicated In an Interview
which he gave out on his recent arrival
in this country Its deucedly hard for
a foreigner no matter how praiseworthy
his motives or exalted his station to set
sail after an American girl said the
count who speaks perfect English Im
i mediately the cry of fortunehunting for
I eigner Is raised It is a tribute to the
beauty and brain of the American girl
I that foreigners are willing to risk even
this danger to win her In this point
alone lies one of the most Infallible
proofs that the American girl Is the queen
of women the world over

Unfaithful Frenchman Met Awful
Death at the Hands of
Former Mistress
Special Cable to HeraldRepublican
Paris March 26A vitrolthrower
named Eugenie Baujean has just been
sentenced to twenty years penal servi
tude by the assize court at Auxerre I
Her victim was a retired sergeant ma
jor of gendarmerie named Sarrasin It
was the old story of the crime passion
el The inevitable rupture occurred
Sarrassin had arranged to marry a
i woman with a dot His discarded
sweetheart did not take kindly to the
separation There was a violent quar
rel and she left his house vowing that
she would have her revenge She was
as good as her word A few days later
she waylaid her unfaithful lover and
flung the contents of a bottle of vitriol
in his face The corrosive liquid burnt
him about the face arms and throat
inflicting such injuries as to bring about
his death two months later
In the court the accused woman
showed no contrition and gloried in her
deed

Special Cable to HeraldRepublican
Milan March 6The Carrara marble
mines district has been startled by an in
human crime committed by an old man of
70 named Garlettl Suspecting his little
niece Olga a pretty 7yearold girl of
pilfering dainties from the kitchen the
old uncle caught her In the act and
dashed her brains out with the butt end
of his gun
Unable to carry out his design of fling
ing Hip hllds body into a disused quar
ry on ccount of the throng of marble
workers passing homeward bound after
their days toil Garlettl locked it in a
wine cellar and afterwards called Angela
the childs elder sister and cynically bade
her to look in the cellar as she would
find Olga there asleep Angela save that
the poor victim was still silently breath
ing but expired almost at once in her
arms murmuring Mamma mamma
The carabinieri have a strong suspicion
that the deed was a premeditated one
They promptly arrested not only the as
sassin but his wife and nephew and
shut them up together In a cell containing
a hiding place where a detective was con
cealed The police state today that they
are in possession of evidence that the bru
tal murder was the outcome of a family
plot
