Melbourne Australia Two trains
from Daltarat and Bondlgo respective
ly collided late at night at Draybook
Junction about eight miles from Mel
bourne fortyone persons being killed
and sixty Injured The Dendlgo train
with two heavy engines crashed Into
the rear of the Ballarat train Five
cars of the latter train were wrecked
The wreckage took tire and was al
most completely consumed
Many of the bodies were unrecog
nizable when recovered
The Dendlgo train suffered but

little danmge but the two engines
were piled up on top of the rear
coaches of the other t train Terrible I
scenes followed many of the Injured
being caught In the wreckage and
were with difficulty rescued It was
a long time before doctors and nurses
arrived on the scene and as a conse
quence Intense suffering prevailed
among the Injured

critical situation of a small Russian
expeditionary force in Persia which
Is menaced by a vastly superior body
of Persian brigands The Russian
troops penetrated the frontier in the
neighborhood of Belesuvar In pursuit

mitted depredations in l Russian terri
tory The Russian commander of the
force has sent out a message demand
ing reinforcements of Infantry artil
lery and cavalry The Persians who
have been Joined by a warlike tribe
of nomads surround the Russians with
a numerous force and their horsemen
have assumed the offensive rho send
ing of Russian reinforcements is
made particularly difficult by the

White Woman Uses Shotgun In Fight
With Negroes
Memphis Tenn Mrs James
Wright of this city on Monday shot
and killed Lelia Gordon a negro
woman Mrs Wright used a singlebar
reled shotgun She then reloaded the
weapon and started in pursuit of Mary
Davis another negro woman She
shot at her once after a chase of
nearly a block but the charge went
wildThe homicide followed a desperate
struggle between white and negro
women In which Mrs John Wright
a sisterinlaw of Mrs James Wright
who lives with her received a bad
beating at the hands of the Davis and
Gordon women A quarrel over the
children of the white woman being
stopped from playing with some negro
children living In the vicinity led to
the fight

mended to the house for passage on

much spirited discussion In the com
mittee and the action In recommend
ing the bill for passage caused Jubila

posed to some of the provisions of the

Washington Calling attention to
the Grand Army button he wore on
the lapel of his coat and Insisting that
he had no prejudice against negro sol
diers some of whom he claimed as
comrades Senator Warner of Mis
souri in tho senate on Tuesday de
clared his conviction that the town of
Brownsville Texas had been shot up
by negro soldiers of the Twentyfifth
Infantry In 1900 Mr Warner quoted
extensively from tho testimony taken
in the Brownsville case and presented
an argument to sustain his belief In
the guilt of the negro soldiers

Italian demand for Italian postofllcca
In Turkish territory In order to avoid
a naval demonstration In her waters
Turkey has communicated officially to
the Italian government that It does
not object to Italy establishing post
offices In tho Turkish cities where the
other powers have like institutions
Furthermore the porte has practically
acknowledged the other Italian claims
In the matter of the right of Italians
freely to purchase property In Turk
ish territory and with regard to coast
navigation
As a result of these concessions the
Italian government has Issued orders
to the fleet that was about to depart
for Turkey to remain In Italian wat
ers and the Incident is regarded as
closed
Constantinople The difficulty with
Italy regarding the opening of post
offices has been arranged The Turk
ish government has recognized Italys
right to the same treatment In this
respect as Is enjoyed by the other
powers and no further objection will
be raised to the establishment of Ital

Seneca Kan James Lally charged
with murder was burned to death In
a fire which destroyed the jail here
