Contralto's Musical Efforts Accom panied by the Living Article. Alice Sovereign had a trying experi ence recently In Pittsburg, her recital ending with a llttlo tragedy, tho dra matis personao of which wero tho con tralto and a bluebottle fly. Tho re frain of Nevln's "Yearning" had just been reached and Miss Sovereign In her most appealing tone3 was entreat ing, "Oh, fly with mo!" when the blue bottle, nccei.,ing tho invitation, ap peared. Refusing to bo brushed aside, it buzzed blithely about tho singer's pretty face and with commendable taste remained in the vicinity of her lips. "Oh, fly! oh, fly!" continued Miss Sovereign, a bit tremulously. "Buzz!" was tho noncommittal answer. "Oh, fly!" confined the contralto, on a low C that gave very little hint of her trepidation. And then the worst hap pened. Without pausing to reflect, the fly impulsively rushed into tho breach and disappeared. It was a critical moment for both, but Miss Sovereign proved equal to tho emergency. With out wincing, and with excellent breath control, she aided tho Intruder In Its downward journey, and con cluded tho song with a clear, mellow, and truthful, "Oh, fly with me!" The Incident was unnoticed by the audi ence, but Miss Sovereign still has the fly in memory, at least. o Steel Pens. Steel writing pens aro a modern In T . ventlon. In a recent report of tho geological survey of India thero Is an Interesting account of tho Panna diamond fields of central India. Historically this country Is believed to bo the original home of the diamond and from thorn it 13 supposed that tho famous Kohl noor was extracted some three and a half centuries ago, the earliest dia monds dating some 25 years previous ly. Of late years India has quite re tired from the Hold as a precious stono producer to any extent or value, but from tho account given It should bo worth tho whllo of a small syndicate to take up these diamond fields, says tho Pioneer, and work them systemati cally, though It Is said that neither In luster nor price do the stones found compare with tho yield of tho South African fields. The methods, however, now In vogue mean merely superficial treat ment, following the lines which have been In vogue for centir'-,s, with tho probable result that the strata con taining the most valuable deposits of stones are not reached.
