Brnnton, the Well Known Sampler. David \V. Brnnton, the well-known mining engineer, and one of the ehief men in tin-Taylor ik Brnnton Sampling company, reached the city yesterday morning on his way Bark to Colorado from a study of conditions in the T"tio pah-teildfield region, Nevada. lie in spected tin- local sampler in company with < ieneral Superintendent L. A.Cope land, and left on an early evening train. During the afternoon Mr. Brnnton said: “It is true that our company is going into the sampling Business in the new gold fields. We shall have a plant erected and he prepared to do business liefore spring, or by the time spring opens, at least. I do not care to say just where we intend to Build, at this time, but the plant will In* conveniently located for the business we hope to se cure.” Mr. lirunton said lie did not find time to visit as much of tlie country as he would have liked to, hut lie saw enough, he said, to be able to designate it as wonderful. “Twenty-seven years ago,” said he, “I was in charge of the Silver Peak mines, hut it was a hard country to do business in then. Ore had to lx- hauled out to Wadsworth with ox teams, but even under those conditions money was made. I thought a great deal of the country in those days, but I never sus peeted that it would come to the front with such long and rapid strides as it is doing now. It is simply wonderful. “Salt Lake is going to miss one of the ehanees of a life-time if its business men do not wake up and prevail on the San Pedro to build up through the chain of camps extending from its line clear through to Goldfield. Salt Lake would reap the lion’s share of the business that is inevitably going to result from the boom which has struck that country and now, right now, is the time to go after it. If you don't do it, you will wake up some morning and find that California lias headed you off. With a road up through that country from Caliente, or some other convenient point on tiie line, Salt Luke would at once tie come the headquarters for all kinds of supplies and. I believe, for nearly all of the products of the mines. My investi gations showed me that all of the early day camps and a number of new ones are forging to the front and business of all kinds will grow out of tbe great pop ulation that will be in there during the next two or three years. The country is full of merit and that means that it will soon bv full of people.” Mr. Rrunton is a nifth whose life lias been spent in mining communities and his judgment is entitled to the fullest respect.—Salt Lake Tribune. The Fineness of Nevada Gold. There were received by tbe San Fran cisco mint lately several bars of remark ably fine gold, says the Denver Mining Reporter. They were obtained from the treatment of about, fourteen and one half tons of ore which gave tin- remark able yield of l$.'{,0<X> a ton. Tbe purity of tiie gold, however, is more noteworthy than even tbe richness of the ore, tiie bars assaying betweenUK1 andSWT.o fine. The bars are said to be the purest ever received at the San Francisco mint, and it is worthy of comment that if tbe liars had been a few points finer they would have reached the standard of fineness of tiie United States mint, namelv, IKK). The gold in tiie bullion was valued as it stood at ♦l’0.41 an ounce, as against an ounce for perfectly pure gold. Former Millionaire Dies in Poverty. Frank Dorman, once an associate of Mackey. Flood, Fair, O’Brien and other Comstock millionaires, died a few days ago in a cabin near Bye Patch, in Hum boldt county, where be eked out a meager existence. Dorman was once one of tlx* wealthy mine operators in Nevada, and figured in many giant op erations. His fortune incited and war lv a quarter of century ago he left Vir ginia City for the desert lands in Hum boldt. There he engaged at cattle rais ing and linally died in poverty. It is reported in that country that he left an immense fortune, hut there is no foundation for the story. He was al most jxjimiless when lie left the Com stock. Mining Exchange. The following is handed in for publi cation. says the Bishop Register: The rooms in the rear of (ieo. \V. Neill’s store are being fitted tip as a milling exchange, in connection with the offices of The Bishop Creek Hold Co. M. T. Stovall and Prof. Max Jung haendel will have charge. The idea is to make this excliange headqurters for the mining interest of Inyo county, and the public is invited to co-ojierate. Mines or prospects may be listed for sale, and methods will he adopted for bringing owners and inves tors into intimate relations. The Exact Thing Required for Con stipation. ‘'As a certain purgative and stomach purifier Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets seem to he the exact tiling required, strong enough for the most robust, yet mild enough and safe for children and without that terrible, grip ing so common to most purgatives,' says R. S. Webster ik Co., I'dora, Ontario, Canada. For sale by Martin Muller. Location Notices and Certificates of Location (for recording) for sale at Tiie News office. R The Treatment of Pneumonia. F. I). Rcerc enters a plea against the use of alcohol in pneumonia. Its admin istration cannot lie justifieri hy any good scientific reason, and then* is no indica tion for its us*, that cannot lie met by some other drug or remedy. The treat ment he employs is eliminative and comprises a hot foot hath and calomel as soon as the disease is susjiected, to gether with doses of salicylate of-odium. When the diagnosis is established, ace tate of |Mitassiuiu is given for its action on the kidneys, together vs it li liquor ammoniac aeetatis to relieve the heart. If the temperature reaches 105 degrees, cold sponging or cold pack to the chest. Abdominal distension is con trolled by the usual measures, and care ful attention is directed to the feeding, which should not lie too often nor too much. The pulse must liecloselv studied, and it is its quality rather than its rate that should be regarded. A soft pulse should lie strengthened with strychnine, digitalis, and rest, and a hard pulse re quires Dover’s powder and nitroglycer ine. Rest is of the greatest importance, and the patient should lie disturlied as seldom as jsissihle. The prodromal stage is much longer than is usually sup posed. and the disease is commonly ushered in by a more or less protracted (icriod of malaise and indis)iosition. The author has treated L’l successive eases by this method, with two deaths, both of which were caused liv other condi tions.—Medical Record. About the Limit. The school ma’am receives funny an swers at times. We often hear of the unconscious humor of children in the schoolroom, but the following is about the limit: An Elko county school ma'am wrote the phrase “The hitter end" on the blackboard the other day and asked a little fellow to use the expression in a sentence. Johnny promptly replied, “The armies fought to the hitter end.” Another little hoy was then called upon to make a sentence containing the phrase and gave the following: “The dog and cat fought and fought and then the dog chased the cat under a chair and bitter end.” Write l).
