Drake Confident It Will Be Re-Discovered. Some month.* ago Tin: Nrws published an at con nt of the discovery made in the early sixties l>y Breyfogle in the desert country of south-western Nevada. It is reported that a company of ex |X'rieticed prospectors is organizing for another effort to find the lost mine, and interest is again being aroused as to what the results may In-. t Many persona consider the story of ■ Brey logic'.* aw ful suffering* on his soli tary journey overland from Is'S Angeles, i Cal., to Austin, New, and the marvel ' ousness of liis find while starving on the I desert, as mythical and unworthy as a ; basi* for search for the two gold cap|>ed mounds described by him. Men who knew Breyfogle believed his story, because he was habitually truth ^ ful, and because he brought nuggets of fine gold and gold studded quartz into Smoky Valley, where he was found half ; d« •merited, ragged, starved and dying i trom want of water. Furthermore, the“»• could have bi'cii no cause to in j duee he little Dutchman to render false ; statements about the matter. In an interview with the Nkws, Col. Frank V. Drake, at present associated , with lh>n. Fierce Kvans, formerly dis ; triet attorney of Washoe county, ex presses the belief that Breyfogle did in fact find the little gold-capped moun tains substantially as related by him on his arrival in Austin. Breyfogle was an awful w reck physically and mentally on reaching Austin, but he was positive of the fact of his find and he had gold with him. lie was ever after anxious to get back into the desert to search for the treasure, and headed two or three expe ditions for the purpose. On one of these expeditions he found tiie spring where he hud huilt a wail for protection from the Indians (who had previously killed his partner) hut he failed to find the low gold-capped hills or mounds. Perhaps drifting sand and volcanic dust may have covered them temporarily—or Breyfogle's weak ened mind may have distorted his ob servation so much as to make recollec tion oi localities unreliable. Col. Drake, then known as plain Frank Drake, was a boy of 18 years and working, chiefly on the mining depart ment of the Keese Kiver Reveille at Austin when Breyfogle, tattered and half crazed, ended his fearful journey in that town. Mr. Drake saw Breyfogle and his gold specimens and heard liis story repeatedly. It was one fearful in detail. The Austin Reveille of that time, if the tiles are still extant, will disclose the story as given at that time, and Col. Drake believes in the truth of the tale. He thinks that the recent developments in this country, through which the sturdy little Dutchman toiled on that long and dreadful journey, is still another proof of his truthfulness, and of the fact that he found two small hills capped with free gold and “quartz nug gets.’’ It is Worth Money To You to Cut < Hit the Coupon in the corner of this ad and present same at H. BEDDING MATTRESSES SPRINGS WEEKLY MARKET LETTER. Comments on the Local Situation by Kenneth Donnellan H Co. There was great excitement in Gold field this week over two strikes almost within the town limits and some high assays were secured from the rock. At this writing these strikes have not lieen proven up, hut the finding of the ore in such unlikely-looking places calls re newed attention to the wonderful possi bilities of this district. Many of the prospect* are liable to make a rich strike any day and the value of the stock double or triple in a day. Sandstorm still occupies the center of the stage and in spite of the fact that many havt taken advantage of its rapid rise to take profits, the price has held firm and we look for a much greater ad vance. Samples from a shipment w hich will goout from the boftus-Davis-Mayne lease about the 20th, show that the high est grade ore is worth about $1,000 per ton, the average of that now reached be ing $2,000 i>er ton. It is not expected that the entire shipment will maintain this high average, but if it does, it will be most valuable shipment, with one exception, ever sent out of camp. The Combination has paid another dividend of $40,000. or I2?.. per cent on its outstanding capital. The last bal ance sheet of this company shows a profit of $:?20.000 for the year over and above Jill mining and operating expenses, | in addition to having about $:5o0.0001 worth of mill ore on the dump. Goldfield Mining has made ji rapid j advance during the week, due to buying , orders from those who best know the value of the property. There are many other stock which will score even greater advances as soon as the investing public fully realize the low prices at which Goldfield stocks are selling. w e quote: Tonopah, common ♦ it 60 Montana-Tonopah. 1 70 Midway... 55 Midnight 25 MacNamara 24 North Star ... 24 Belmont.
