EMARKSaca TONOPAH a OOLOriCLO. NEV. GOLD FIELD CONDITIONS — Mining Stock Exchange Doing a Bush ing Business "Dick*' Colburn, the secretary of the Red Top mine and a broker of Goldfield, is spending the holidays in San Francisco, and this morning out lined business as it was done on the Goldfield exchange, says the Journal it Commerce. He also spoke of the con ditions as they exist in the Nevada camp regarding the treatment of the oros at Goldfield. “There is some trouble about trans portation charges. They are so high that it limits the mines in the shipment of their ores. The milling conditions are not so good as they might be just uow. The cold weather freezes the water and is constantly stopping the mills. Ore from the Red Top mine averages about $128 per toh, but the treatment of the output has been re tarded on account of the cold weather. The company has a contract with a local mill to work 1,000 tons by Jan uary 25th, and as much more as can bj handled. “The Goldfield exchange is doing a rushing business and the transactions aggregate between 200,000 and 300,000 shares a week. None but properties that will pass the closest scrutiny are listed, and no stocks are allowed to be traded in except those that are on thj list. The exchange has about fifty members and all the active brokers are busy. Much of the business comes from Nevada, but lately many orde-s have come from the east. Formerly the miners gambled their money away, but now they are buying mining stock*. Much speculation is indulged in, but many of the patrons of the exchange are buying the stocks as an investment. We make our own quotations and pay no attention to the prices set by the San Francisco boards.” CHANGE FOB THE BETTER The promoter who has been for some time foisting upon his confiding clients any old claim as a mine has had his day, says Ores and Metals. He has done his part toward educating the people, and while the result has been dis astrous to those who were so easily parted from their money, it has been little less disastrous to the promoter himself, who has pursued these devious trails in the mining fields. Both sides have had the experience, and the re sult has been of value to both. The victim has not paid much for his educa tion and has learned that it is not hard to detect a mining fraud if he makes the proper investigation, and that there are opportunities in this field with less risk than in American Steel, for in stance. The wild-cat promoter has learned that it is politic to be honest, and that he can make as much money by legitimate promotions, as he will not be compelled to disgorge at the de mand of the horde of harpies who swarm about the “get-rich-quick” con cerns. There is now a rush on the part of those whose methods in the past have been none of the best to get under cover, and in all of the mining dis tricts in which they have “operated” it is found that more or less work is going on in the name of men and pro motion companies whose chief distinc tion in the past has been to avoid even the semblance of work. In one case ? man who said to an associate: “We’ll make up the pay rolls in this office; we don't want them coming in from the mine,” is now putting men at work, as a last despairing effort to regain his lost prestige. Now mining promotion is a legiti mate business, beside which the meth ods of the eastern magnates sink to the level of those of the street fakir, and it is a welcome sign of the growing in terest in mining that honest promote s report that they have little difficulty in interesting capital. There are countless opportunities in the mining field for the making of money by the promoter, in enterprises that give the investor a run for his money, even with a cheap stock (for the matter of capitalization and the price of stock cut very little figure so long as the property is worth the price at which the stock is sold at), and the promoter who finds a good thing is en titled to his profit, for the man who finds a diamond is under no obligation to give it away. Three things should govern all mining promotions: Good locations, honest management, a reasonable show of getting ore. With these assured, the small investor need not fear to risk his money. IN BOSTON “Of course,” said the visitor, “when you share an apple with your little brother you never take the largest half, do youf” “Most assuredly not,” replied little Emerson. “There being but two halves to an apple there can be no ‘largest.' ” CAUSE AND EFFECT Bess—Were you angry because he kised yout Nell—No; but I was when he apolo gized for it later. SUL1FBOO MINES. For sale, terms. Prospects and claims from $100 to $25,000. J. J. Buffie, Rhyolite, Ncv. S. 20-tf. BED TOP A BONANZA W. E. Hughey Tells Journal of Com merce Reporter About the Property W. E. Hughey, one of the directors of the Red Top miue, is in town, and this morning spoke of the property. He said that the mine is looking better than ever and in his opinion it is cheaper today than when it sold at 3S cents. .“The property is looking splendid and I think that the price will go high, er. The conditions at the mine certain ly warrant higher quotations. We had 8,000 sacks of ore in the drifts which will be shipped as soon as we can get fair freight rates. At the present time the freight charges are excessive. On the dumps are about 2,000 tons of ore that we value at about $50,000. The men are now constructing an air chute and as the ore is taken out it is placed in bins and locked up in the mine. T'ie shaft is down 185 feet and the bottom is in good ore. There is no doubt but what the company will soon be in a position to declare dividends. “The greatest worry at present is the treatment of the output. The mills are doing good work, but their charges are little high. The Bed Top company has just signed a contract with a re duction plant to work 1,000 tons by January 25th. We will grade our ore down to $100, and the rate on this grade will be $19. The transportation charges are something fearful. It costs more to ship ore ninety miles than it costs to ship from Mina to Salt Lake. We had a carload of machinery com ing from San Francisco and the freight charges were $715.43, and then we later got an undercharge bill of $49 more. “The Red Top will construct the best mill in Goldfield ind work will be com menced just as soon as the Jumbo mill is running, which will be in about two months. We want to wait until we see what is the best process for Goldfield ores. “The shaft in the Jumbo mine is down 500 feet, but there is not much work being done in the mine just now. They are looking for water and expect to strike a good quantity to run the mill.” A PUN WITH FEATHERS ON IT Senator Newlands of Nevada is one of the few American statesmen who love puns. The senator often regales his colleagues with puns, original and quoted. It is generally admitted that he is an excellent judge of this sort of wit. “Here,” said Senator Newlands, the other day, “is a Nevada pun. ‘ ‘ An old farmer sat on the doorstep smoking his pipe. His favorite hen pecked near him. He regarded the hen indulgently as he puffed the smoke into the clear evening air. “All of a sudden he gave a start of astonishment. “ ‘By jingo!’ he said, ‘the old hen is eating stray tacks. Can she be going to lay a carpet?' ”—New York Trib une. TENT HOUSE FOB SAXE A 12x14 tent house and lot in choice neighborhood in Phenix addition for sale cheap. Inquire News office. NO. 1141.
