Statist points out that the growth in
the deposits of individual banks re
flects the tendency of the times, which
involves a desire to act in co-opera
tion and combination with nthers It
furthermore points out that In Euro
pean countries at least people with
money formerly favored the private
banker, who in these days has almost
ceased to exist, the great banks offer
ing much better facilities at little or
no cost, combined with much greater
assurance of safety to the depositor.

FINANCING THE NATION'S WARS.
To finance our war with Spain the
Government borrowed $200,000,000, In
creased the taxes m spirits, beer and
tobacco and levied stamp taxes. Reve
nue from spirits rose from $92,000,000
in 1898 to 599,000.000 In 1899 and Si 16.
000.000 in 1901. Revenue from beer
rose from $39,000,000 in 1898 to $69.
000,000 In 1899 and $75,000,000 In 1901.
Revenue from tobacco rose from
$36,000,000 in 1898 to $52,000,000 in
1899 and $62,000,000 In 1901. Stamp
taxes produced $40,000,000 a year.
Since 1898, however, consumption of
spirits hag increased from 1,000,000
gallons to 140,000,000. and of beer from 'H
1,100,000,000 gallons to 2,000,000,000.
War taxes on those articles would be
correspondingly more productive.
Judging from the experience of
France, where tobacco 1r a state mo
nopoly. that commodity alone could be
made to yield a revenue of $150,000,
