li TF-TE: OGDEN STANDARD: OGDEN, UTAH, MONDAY, APRIL 14. 1919. 3 Rv i i - i mrnnr-r rrr-tommiiMWMlimr'-- "The Black Hole of Calcutta" did not have much on the present Weber county jail, which is pic tured above. This photograph, unretouched, was taken Friday afternoon when the sun was shining brightly and there were evidences or spring outside. But the prisoners in the poorly lighted, poorly ven tilated and damp county jail did not know whether it was night or day, summer or winter. It was all the same to them. We have con demned the prison in India, the bastiles of the world and the war prison camps, but right in our very midst there is a condition exist ing that would make some of the prisons we have criticised, look like a palace as compared to it. The jail is one of the sore spots on the civilization of the state, a disgrace to any community and a men ace to the life of human beings, that have been unfortunate enough to err against the laws and society of man. . . . There is little won der that Dr. T. B. Beady, of the state health board, so bitterly con demned the jail and said that the state health board would compel the building of a new jail from direct taxation if the county did not make preparations to build a new one. Now Mr. Taxpayer, if you have a few minutes to spare, go to the county jail and let Sheriff Peterson or some of Ifls deputies show you through the jail. After you see what the conditions really are, it's a ten to one bet that you vote for the bonds next Wednesday and urge your friends to do so. - BEAUTIFUL SITE CHOSEN FOR THE LEAGLECAP1TAL GENEVA, Saturday. There are striking parallels in Gen-, e i- .md John; in Genesis we read; "Let there be light;" in John we have, these words, "There was the true light ! that lichteth every man coming into the w orld. ' Genesis gives us the pic - I lure of "Abel offering the lamb"' In ! John we have, "Behold the lamb ofj God." In Genesis "Jacob's ladder ris- es into view. In John. Jesus said. "Our souls loathe this light bread," as though they would say, "This bread is light and worthless: it puffs up but does not imparl strength." These I rebellious children of God became so Fault-finding, faint-hearted and faith-! Throughout the whole camp of Israel ; everybody was bitten Men. women arui children in every tent, were suf lering unspeakable agony from the earful bite of ihe fiery serpents. We have here a true likeness of the whole world, blifen by the serpent of sin. Sin i- the most horrible lact we have to face In the world. How preposterous' No one was ever born a Christian Charles H. Spurgeon tells the story of a Mr Gurling, one of the keepers of 1 the reptiles In the zoological gardens ( wai in October, 1S52. Thi3 man' was about to say soodbyc to a friend I on bis way to Australia; they drank' together until Gurling became quite drunk He returned to the gardens greatly excited. Sometime before he; had seen an exhibition of snake charm ing; he endeavored to immulatc the1 Egyptians. Gurling put his band into; the cage and grasped a Morocco snake, put it around his neck, and whirled It round about, him. Luckily for him. the serpent did not bite him. An as sistant keeper shouted: ' For God sake put that serpent back'" The poor drunk man replied, I am inspired." He put the serpent in its cage and cried, 'Now for the cobra:" Because of the cold of the previous nignt. this deadly serpent was torpid. Gurlinp put the snake jn his bosom until It revived and glided downward till its head appeared below the back of his waist-coat. He took it by the bodv,: about a foot from the head and then seized it lower down, with the other hand Intending to hold it bv the tail and swing it around his head. For a moment he held it before his face Like i a flash of lightning the serpent struck; him between the eyes, the blood streamed down his face, and he called1 for help. His companion fled in ter ror. When he returned he saw the poor man sitting in a chair, having re stored the cobra to its place. He said, "I am a dead man." They carried him to ihe hospital. First his speech went and then his eye eight and in two hours be was a corpse The bite of this sergent could not be compared with the horrible bite and poison of sin. God says, "All have sinned and r ome short of the dory 0f God." Again the bible says, "that the heart is de ceitful above all things and desperate ly wicked." I God had Moses put before the peo ple just a simple serpent of brass ij so God has raised on Golgotha s brow a plain, simple, rugged cross. un that cross Jesus, our Saviour, dies for man To the proud, selfish, sinful heart, the bloody sight of the cross Is most re pulsive, but to the honest, sincere humble, contrite soul, that is seeking after God, with an intense desire to know Him, there is in that cross and in our Saviour's death thereon, beauty, majesty and immortal glory- Every true child of God cries with Paul the apostle. "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of Jesus Chrisl our Lord." A certain bishop In a for icn land said to one of our mission aries, Avho was preaching salvation by faith alone, in Christ Jesus. "Oh, Sir, open that gap and we are undonr All doctrines that contradict salvation by laith in Christ alone should and "hall be forever undone. Some years ago a ship was wrecked, not far from shore, a number of people gathered i hf re Mini looked out from the shon and saw the wreck, among their num ber was a minister of Jesus Chrisr They saw on that sinking ship a largi number ol people, the breakers were dashing high; a voice came crying across the waves to those upon the shore, "Oh, what shall we do to be saved1" From the shore the minister, making a speaking trumpet of hi hands, shouted' above the storm, "be lieve in the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved " The wreck was seen going to pieces and as the peo ple thereon went down to a watery grave they were heard singing: "Jesus, lover of my soul, Let me to Thy bosom fly, While ihe nearer waters roll While the tempest still 8 high; Hide me, oh: my Saviour, hide, 'Till the storm of life is past, Sale, within the haven guide; Oh! receive iuy soul at last." They were called "fiery serpen'.- ' perhaps, because of their fiery color and especially, because of the effect of the venom, as it coursed through the blood, burning like streams of fire. In other words If Hell sh.ill have an end, then Heaven itself will at some period cease to be. Jesus Christ alone Is our only savior. "For there is no other name given from Heaven among men whereby we must be saved. Christ said. False religions invariably make, salva tion hard, they would have you walk on naked knees tor miles; pierce your feel with spikes, or inflict other hor rible tortures upon your body. The healing-of the Israelites was gloriously real. There was no sham about it. The very moment the peo ple looked io ihe brazen serpent, the fevei abated, the poison was stayed lb its course; all anguish and pain ceased. Poisoned by the serpent's bite they were now saved from death by looking upon a serpent of brass im paled upon a pole. Salvation through Jesus Christ Is gloriously real; it moans salvation from .in, from the poison of sin, the guilt ot sin, and the power ot .uin. H you are saved through the blood of Jesus Christ, you are saved for two worlds The healing to the Hebrews was also enduring. The ficrv serpent of bras-, con Untied with them near the tabernacle door, as their constant, never failing remedy. So stands the cross of Christ, rising high amid the ages. I The r. incdy thai God cave to Israel for the bite of the fiery serpents, was very simple It could not havo been more so.
