Jefferson Howell, for whom the Salt Lake po lice have sought for eighteen months, wanted as a bank robber, and alleged to have been active in the stealing; of gold bullion from miners ihrough out the northwestern states, is in cus tody In a hospital at Yreka. B. Davis. Traced Through Letter. Mrs Howell, until November 30, WtS a resident of Suit Lake A letter U) her, written from Montague. Cal , a. town near, Yreka, was obtained by Chief White. The letter said that Howell's condition could be learned ; from accounts in the California pa pers. It was learned that Davis, a 'bank robber, waa held in custody. A telegram was sent to Sheriff A. S. Carl son of Yreka. asking hjm to accuse Davis of being Howell. A telegram received yesterday morning by hiel White from Sheriff Carlson read:1 "Davis makes lull confession to Jiu-. -low." Howell first , came under the notice' of the Suit Lake police department 1 when Wesley DeWitt was arrested and was alleged to have confessed to the authorities that he and Howell were I responsible for for the theft of three bars of gold from H. Boswell and hi, son at Grant's Pass. Ore., in May, .1918. Following HeWitt's arrest younc j Boswell and a deputy pheriff came to Salt Lake, where they stayed for some Mine, watching the Howell home on I j street in the hope that Howell would return so they could effect his capture.
