RAILROAD MEN IN THE
r LOCAL YARDS MAKING RECORD
Ar OC
The local freight yards of the Har
riman lines both night and day arc
a scene of unusual activity at this
lime of the year Never before have
the railroads been able to handle so
great a tonnage with promptness and
dispatch as they are doing at the pres
ent time
The officials of the local yards as
well as those of the Union Pacific and
the Southern Pacific are unusually
Jubilant at present towing to the fact
that they aro getting greater tonnage
over their divisions than over before
without congestion of trains or cars
Several freight trains carrying from
1800 tons to 2230 tons arrive and de
part In the local yards dally
The ono problem that keops tho offi
cials guessing is tho finding of ample
trackage for tho mammoth freight
trains which are almost a mile in
length

moval of tho defendants from ono dis
trict to another for trial unless they
wore fugitives was maintained by I
Tohn D Lindsay of Now York coun I
sel for the New York World in the
Panama libel case before Judge A B
Anderson In tho United Stales court
Great danger to tho Institution of
liberty Is threatened In a possible
court order removing the publishers
of the Indianapolis News to the Dis
trict of Columbia for trial in this pro
ceeding for criminal libel said Mr
Winter following Mr Lindsay for the
defendants
Consider that the power of the
president is greater than that of any
crowned king said Mr Winter and
the District of Columbia being tho
seat of government is inhabited by
many persons dependent upon the
government machinery for their live
lihood consider that this libel pro
ceeding was brought about by an In
flammatory message from the former
president to congress consider that
the whole immense power of tho ex
ecutive department Is behind this in
dictment and finally consider that
these defendants If taken to the Dis
trict of Columbia for trial should have
to appear before a jury largely made
up of employes and officeholders of
the very machinery that Is behind this
procecutlon
Mr Winter argued also that tho
statute of seditious libel In the Dis
trict of Columbia which provides ex
ceptionally severe fines and imprison
ment was not intended to cover such
examples of libel as that charged
against Messrs Smith and Williams
Further ho should provide for remov
