office for two years until their suc

CONVERSE WEEPS WHEN
VEBDIGT IS RETURNED
George H Converse who has been
on trial In the district court for the
past three days In connection with the
theft of ostrich plumes from the Ly
man Brothers wholesale millinery
house last June was found guilty of
grand larceny by a Jury In tho district
court late yesterday afternoon after
reamlnlng out about an hour
When tho verdict was read Con
verse broke down and wept like a
child Following the theft of the val
uable plumes the managers of tho
millinery house notified the police
who in turn notified the Salt Lake po
lice to bo on tho watch for any per
son offering them for sale
Converse appeared at the Rowe mil
llnory store In Salt Lake a few days
I after the feathers were missed and
offered them for sale Several wero
purchased by the Zion millinery Later
he returned and offered others for
sale but as the managers of this con
cern had In the meantime heard of
the Ogden thoft they were suspicious I
and instead of malting other purchases
notified the Salt Lake police which
resulted In Converse being placed un
der arrest by Detective Earl Rlplcy
Converse when called as a witness
on his own behalf told a plausible
story of having purchased the plumes I
from a foreigner whom he met In a
saloon at Murray He produced sev
eral witnesses yesterday who corrob
orated him In this statement On the
evening the plumes were stolen tho
prisoner said that ho arrived at Ogden
over the Bamberger route about 9 I
oclock The train sheets wero pro
duced which showed that the train he
said he came to Ogden on arrived hero
about S oclock Several other discrep
ancies were found In his testimony
The prisoner Is a mlddleaged man of
Good presence and says that ho has
been coming to Ogden for many years
while following his business of solicit
ing for novelty houses

BIG POULTRY SHOW
The interest In the poultry show at
Salt Lake City continues unabated
and yesterday Judge Kccler gave his
final opinions in which the silver cups
wore at stake there was a crowd of
several hundred who followed him
throughout and listened to his find
Ings with keen interest Nightly the
show Is crowded to Its capacity
The Vogeler sweepstakes cup one
of the best general prizes of the ex
hibition was won by J W Bird who
had the highest scoring pen In the
show They wore Plymouth Rocks and
were beautiful birds Tho silver cup
given by the Utah State Poultry as
sociation given for the highest scor
ing cock cockerel hen and pen went
to Wheeler Bros on their splendid
White Leghorn exhibit
The Hoffman cup was won by Harry
Osler for the first prize pen of White
Wyandottes Tho Sander cup belongs
to John W Bird as he had the high
est scoring White Hock cock exhibit
ed Hugh W Smith came In strong
with the first prize on tho greatest
number of birds scoring 91 or bettor
with C J Sander second and A Bells
third
Among tho Rhode Island Reds
single comb William Woodflcld of
Ogden had the best colored female
bird and Ed Best showed the beat
shaped male and female Mr Best aso
carried off the prize for the best col
ored female In the rose combed
species of the breed Ed Larson of
Ogden had the best shaped female In
this class
SCHOOL PLANS NOW
BEING CONSIDERED
The City Board of Education held
a flftcenmlnuto session last night to
wind up matters of routine standing I
over from the last school semester
It was decided that the plans
for tho now Van Buren school would
be allowed to remain In the board
rooms at tho City hall until Febru
ary 1 KO that the members could ox
amino them carefully and submit any
suggestions which might he deemed
feasible before bids on tho school
were advertised for The new school
building will have twelve rooms and
equipped with all of the modern con
veniences found In modern Institu
tions of this kind
John Ellis was awarded the con r
tract for the erection of a rostrum In
the assembly hall at the new High
School building Miss Sarah Williams
was elected as an assistant teacher
