At the Union Printers Home today I

of Its kind In the world conducted by
a trad ifnion for the benttlt of Its In

I
of the property is estimated at one
million dollars and the addition that <
was dedicated today cost 30000 It I
liming tho Homos magnificent col

Among the speakers were Mayor Av

tho local typographical union a rep

by a largo number of people Presi

tile dedication ceremonies incident to r
the latest addition to the Institution I
known as he Union Printers Home
the Library Addition I
Many of you are acquainted with
the wonderful development of this I
property You will recall that the j
main building occupied a barren and i
desolate hillside that through loyalty I
on the part of the union printers on
this continent patience on tho part
of the management and industry on
the part of Its assistants has been I
developed until now It is one of the j
most bountiful parks In this section I
that from time to time new building
have been erected and Improvements
have been made until at this time the
JacllltlcB of tho Union Printers Home I
are adequate to all dcmnndc
Tho history of the Library Addi
tion is typical of the history of the I
entire Institution An Insignificant
collection of hooks of a few hundred I
volumes has grown to more than ten
thousand volumes A room commodl
rue and uptodate was needed to
house the collection The require
m nts of tho Home purely domestic
In their nature demanded additional I
room and modern utensils The great
Hood was made known to our mem
bership Immediately the money
necessary oluntarlly contributed be
gan to pour in until the amount in t
hand was sufficient to warrant the
Hoard of Trustees In midcrtakihg
actual work of construction Today
uo are dedicating the new addition 1
hat aside from this beautiful library
mom In which we are assembled hns
Flvon lo the Homo an enlarged din

Including the Home ituclf has been
constructed and is maintained by the

confined to this Institution It Is but
one of its broad liberal and unselfish
policies For years we have paid a
death benefit a fund for which has
been contributed to and maintained
by the membership Two years ago
we Inaugurated a pension fund un
der the rules of which any member
attaining the age of sixty years with
a continuous membership oC twenty
years and unable to secure employ

entitled to a pension of 1 per week
for the balance of life At present we
have 300 of these pensioners and there
Is a balance In this fnud of 240000
thus guaranteeing Its stability and
permanence Aged and Infirm mem

charges We care for our own
We are proud of our trade We
desire to maintain that trade In all
its tradition and perfection To that
end we have established and maintain
a technical school for the benefit of
journeymen and apprentices so that
they may perfect themselves In their
chosen calling may know of and un
derstand Its newest development and
latest Improvement and may turn
that increased knowledge not only to
their own account in the way of ad

but that the art of printing may Itself
be advanced and that the product of
the press in America may be superior
to that of any other country In this
way we perform a public and a pa
