Bridge Over Bear River Destroyed and Trains Detoured Over the
Union Pacific to Ogden Trains to Pass Through Palisade
Canyon on Southern Pacific This Evening
i
The flood waters of the Dear river
washed out a large bridge between
Montpelier and McCammon Idaho
early this morning and trafllc Is at a
standstill on the Oregon Short Line
west from Granger Wjomlng Trains
are being detoured over the Union
Pacific to OLden Several breaks had
occurred prior to this one and the
railroad company was equal to the
emergency until the flood water of
last night took out one of the longest
bridges on the Idaho division
Southern Pacific trains continue to
proceed directly vest from Ogdon
but are being held at Carlln for the
opening of tho washed out road now
definitely fixed at 630 this evening
Tho first train to start through
Palisade canyon the scene of the
greatest damage by the late floods is
scheduled to leave Carlin ten miles
cast of Palisade at 6 p m
YVMle the assurance was made by
the Southern Pacific company Tues
day evening that they would have the
line ready for traffic yesterday aft
ernoon they missed their calculations
bv a few hours However westbound
trains that have been detoured by pIe
way of Portland Oregon for the past
week here ordered sent west begin
ning with trains NOB 3 and 9 yester
day morning These trains arc being
hold at Carlin until the line is open
ed
While the line is practically recon
structed through the districts that
have been affected by the floods the
compnay will keep work trains on re
pair work
Flood Condltlono Encouraging
The flood conditions occordlng to
the reports received at Ogden are
very encouraging at tho present time
The water In the Humboldt river has I
receded during the past week Moun
tain streams that were raging tor
rents are now assuming normal con
dtlons the mountain and hillsides
have lost the greater part of the snow
and tho lakos of water that extend
ed for miles on each side of the track
are disappearing
While the Southern Paclllc com
pany Is beginning to gain a breathing
spell after its strenuous campaign the
Oregon Short Line Is still having
trouble between Granger Wyoming
and HuntinGton Oregon Fresh trou
ble has occurred between McCammon
Idaho and cast to Border Tuesday
evening a bridge at Border was weak
ened to such an extent that the of
flclals 7trc of tho opinion that
trains over that division would have
to be detoured by the way of Ogden
and the Union Pacific for three or
four days The bridge was repaired
and yesterday morning the trains re
sumed travel on that division About
four hours after the Border bridge
had been repaired the one over the
Bear river at Montpelier weakened
and threatened to go out and It was
again necessary to route trains by the
way of Ogden The first of those de
toured trains arrived in Ogden at 10
oclock this morning ado others will
arrive and depart during HIP aft
ernoon The detouring of the Oregon
Short Line trains through Ogden
probably will bcs continued two or
three days
Colonist Rate Again
It Is expected that as soon as the
Harrlman lines as well as their east
ern connecting lines arc assured the
floods are over the colonist rate

The flood situation un the Harri

which It will take many weeks to

NEW SCHOOL
I WILL NOT I
BE BUILT
At a meeting of the board of edu
cation Tuesday evening it was de
cided that the contemplated new
school building on Indian avenue and
Twentythird street shall not bo built
this season
A careful consideration of the finan
cial condition by the board disclosed
the fact that it will require pretty
much all of the MlUdlng fund to make
urgent repairs on the present school I
buildings of the city
The new building would require an
expenditure of 25000 and the finance I
committee Is of the opinion that the
expenditure of that amount of mone >
for a new building at this time Is
practically out of tho question
