Salt Lake April 2Frult Growers

down In tholr request for a reduced
rale on coal to bo used In hoatlug
their orchards tho Denver 8 Rio

question la not one that calls for any
action on Its part
Tho request for lower rates was
niado by J M Fisher Jr represent
ing the fruit growers of the Mill

club Tho matter was referred to the
Commercial club traffic bureau and
S n Babcock commissioner of traf
fic sent the following letters to tile

Judge Building Salt Lake City
Dear SirPermit me to Invite your
attention to the enclosed copies of
letters uf March 9 and 24 from Mr
1 M FlBhor Jr Caldors station
Salt Lake City and addressed to tho
secretary of the Commercial club
asking for the good officos of tho lat
ter In securing some reduction in the
price of nut coal to bo made special
use of In the protection of the or
chards at East Mill Creek
The letters having boon forwarded
to this bureau those copies are Bent
to you for such generous considera
tion as your company may feel dis
posed to extend In the matter While
Mr Flfiher the writer of the letters
has not stated what actual conces
sion In the price of coal Is desired
jet of course that may bo easily as
certained should It suit the pleasure
of your company to give the matter
an Investigation with a view to the
promotion of what appears to be an
entirely new use for the fuel in this
vicinity Ao trust that it may seem
nropor to your company to help the
Applicants out in the matter to a rea
sonable extent I have also sent cop
ies of these letters to Mr S V Dcr
rah assistant general freight agent
of tho DK > Grande company for his
consideration and the hope that he
may find it advisable to cooperate
with your company in tho case Very
respectfully

My Dear SirThe enclosed copies
of correspondence relating to the ap

Mr Derrah replied Thursday as fol

Mr S II Babcock Commissioner ofI

reau Salt Lake City Utah
Dear SI11 am in receipt of your
favor of the 20th Instatit to which
Js attached copies of correspondence
originating with Mr J M FIsherS Jr i
of East Mill Creek relative to above
subject aiuLmoto hiM request for a I
reduction In the freight rate on prob
ably seventyfive tons of coal desired I
for use In heating orchards to pre
vent loss of fruit crop
I think you will agree with me that
the case in queoUon is not one that
should properly call for special action
upon the part of the railroads first
for the reason that the amount of
I
money invohcd is very small and
secondly It is not a subject for con
sideration from an emergency or ca
lamitous standpoint I assume from
Mr Fishers letter that he and others
In the fruitraising business on the
east bench desire to use this means
to insure this seasons crop and sup
posing that nine other growers arc
interested the expense to each so far I
as freight rates are concerned would
amount to 1312 added to 1637 I
which I understand to bo the price
for tho coal would make total ex
pense to each grower of 2099 which
would bo quite an Insignificant sum
as compared with the value of their
property thus protected or Insured
With kind regards I am respectfully
yours S V DERRAH A G fA I

TIle traffic bureaus reply to Mr

Mr SV Derrah Assistant General

Grim do Railroad Co Salt Lake City
Dear SirYour letter of tho 30th
Instant replying to our own of the
29th relating to a desired slight con
cession in the rate on a small quan
tity of coal for the use of fruit grow
ort near this city In protecting their
blossoming orchards from the dangers
of frost and promptly declining to
make any concession is received
The probable amount of the conces
sion as stated by you would surely
bo most Insignificant for tho great
corporation represented by you to
make
It was thought that your company
might at least deem it proper to en
courage the proposed new use for
coal oven if not at all Interested In
the welfare of Its patron but It
would appear generally that the only
proposition appealing with ando
grcc of Molcnmlty to tho railway com
panies In these days are but two in
number how to reduce payrolls and
how to advance rates of transporta
tion Yours truly
