SIBLE FOR SOARING PRICES
James Wilson In a symposium In
The Delineator for April
The Department of Agriculture has
been busy for some time collecting
facts concerning meats on the farm
their movement to market and tho
prices at which they are wholesales
and distributed by tho retailer
We do not know why the people of
the District of Columbia should pay
a 40 per cent Increase to the man who
cuts and distributes the carcass nud
yet that IB the figure
Farmers although they are admit
tedly getting good prices for their pro
ducts at this time receive very little
If any of Iho great Increases In tho
prices of food products Wo have
found during the course of our inquiry
that the twoyearold steer on tho
farm can bo bought today just as
cheaply as 12 years ago
I am gathering proof now which
will demonstrate that the food pro
ducts of the American farm arc being
sold In foreign countries cheaper
than In tho United States This Is
not due as some liave said to the ex
cells of production over consumption
and the necessity for getting rid of the
surplus abroad It Is due to the local
combinations to very low transporta
tion rates within tho United States
and to the exaction of a smaller per
centage of profit by retail distributors
In foreign countries
SHOPPING ON SHIPBOARD
A charming plan to eliminate the
sea would be to make It possible to
accomplish on board ship all that ono
now tires oneself with doing before
sailing Why overcrowd the fortnight
before ono goes and then have that
blank Inactive totally boresome week J
or fortnight at Hun It would be In
finitely moro sensible to fling a fow
things In onoa trunk the condition
cues wardrobe was In not mattering I
in the least and go down to the ship
having led a normal peaceful life up
to the Inst hour The first day out
one would in a lelsourcly manner I
visit the shop deck making ones pur
chases In tho arcade running along
both eldca of the ship It would be
delightful The things would bo cheap
because dutlless It would be con
vonlcnt because ono would engage
ones sewing woman there would boa
sb
and
alj many ns stewardesses
would shop with you lending the as
slstinco of her practical knowledge
Th escono would bo lively not In the
least BiiggesUvo of that monotonous
expanse of gray water which would
In reality be doing its silly senBfileMs
lapplng just outside No limp forms
lying about In chairs It is onougn
to reduce anyone to tho last stages
of limpness to look at that hopeless
ntrotch of liquidity and to know that
tho plodding if well Intentioned ship
hopes to come to land in tho midst of
such a profusion of water Everyone
would bo gayly looking In windows
wearing their usual trim attire not
swathed in an abandoned coTlcctloa
of old and disreputable clothes
The second day ono would have fit
tings an experience warranted to
make one entirely forget ones where
shouts Tho Impossibility of being
seasick with all this absorbing occu
pation Is only mentioned In passing
It being clear to all that tho present
enforced Idleness at sea makes sea
sickness tho foregone mischievous ro
suit The second day one would over
see the overhauling of ones ward
robe renovate remodel and refurnish
U and with all those things well un
der way could buy the last little ne
cessities which one always forgets
and tho last two days out rest from
ones labors What n perfect scheme
It Is everyone satisfied with him
self and the sea general activity
health enjoyment Of course if there
were a stormbut a storm is an occu
pation In Itself At such times the
shops would not be needed New

FASCINATING WIDOWS
There has been much written about
the widow and her great attraction
for mon but never to my knowledge
has a widow taken up tho cudgels for
her kind
Now I have been a widow for about
throe years and doaplto the fact that
widows are supposed to havp designs
on somo poor unsunpcntlng male 1
I am so far Immuno from that fault
Wo widows are to my thinking much
slandered In tho first place the
majority of us loved our departed hus
bands much loo dearly to wish to put
another In his place and those of
us to whom the departure of number
one gave a feeling of relief do not
wish to continue or increase our suf
ferings by making the acquaintance
even of a possible number two
On tho other hand should WQ by
any chance remarry It Booms very
unfair for our friends to remark an
they certainly do Oh yes Mrs
SonudSo Is married again Every
one knew she would not be n widow
for long Why she fairly hooked the
poor mnn or some similar kind
statement
It has been said that the widow Is
popular which she undoubtedly Is
because sho understands men That
is true to some extent hut her popu
larity Is not duo solely to that causo
The men flock round her for various
reasons sometimes because sho com
bines the brightness of a girl with
tho sensibility of a woman a rare
mere man sometimes bccauso they
llko all the ladles but do not wish
to be drawn Into marriage as would
probably bo the cage If they wore to
pay similar or oven fewer attentions
to a single girl Wo all know the
lynxoyod mammas do we not Somo
times because she has money a widow
Is desired
This Is usually the CAUse for It
will bo observed that the uiimoncyod
widow Is not nearly so attractive
Sometimes eho IB Bought bccauso ahA
has experience and Is more likely to
make a good wife and pornotlmp be
cause they love her This Is the last
the most unusual but not II y any
means the least reason thinks that
poor lonely muchtalked about llttlo
widow
