precipitate when It was announced I
that the department of Justice was to

western railroads wljlch was to go
into effect tomorrow Prices had
Bagged from the outset hut on a much
less active market than after tills
news became known
The topic was under consideration
however by reason of tho request
made by western shippers in Wash
ington from this action by tho govern
ment and the resolution on tho sub
ject Introduced In the senate today
Prices closed at about the lowest fig
ure of the day A retrospect of tho
market for May shows the prospect of
increased rates by the railroads plays
an important part In the comprehen
sive advanced in prices The week
after notices had been llled with the
Interstate commerce commission of I I
thy intended Increase prices started I
upward from tho low levels of the
year
Reports that some of the country i
banks nfl in the market for commer I

with assertions thai trust companies
in Chicago have to meet very heavy
demands for crcdlLs from interior
banks The dependence of the rail
roads for increased freight charges to

keep up earnings has been much em
phasized In connection with tho pub
lic agitation against these s
and great stress has been laid on tho
Increases In operating cost from tho
high costs of material and advances
in wages The Intended Increase In
rates nt all events was made the in
strument for lifting prices of stocks
and the occasion for an extensive
SIeculatlon for tho rise The resale I
of these accumulations came as a
natural consequence
