Tin-: old clock;
? ? ?
! Some yean ago, there came to this
country a family from Knglirid, which
settled on tlio upper part of this island,
ami opened a public hou-e.
Among their chattels, was an old fam
ily clock, which they prized more for its
age, than its actual value, ' although it
had told tlio hours for years on years,
with the most .commend Able fidelity..
This clock Is now Mtuatcd? iii^vno of !
the private parlors of the house, anft
many a time has it been the themo of
remark in consequence of its solemn an
tique exterior.
A few d ay.s since, about dusk a cou
|?1 o of mad wags <1 rove up to the door
of the hotel, seated in a light and beau
tiful wa^on, drawn by a superb bay
horse. They sprang out ? ordered the
ostler to pay every attention to the an
imal, and to stable him for the nit/lit.
o
I Kiitering tlio hotel, they tossed off' a
glass of wino n picce, bemouthed acinar,
and directed the landlord to provide the
best game supper in his power.
There was a winsome look in the
countenance of tho elder-a bright spark
ling in his eyes, which occasionally ho
half-closed in a stylo that gave him tho
air of 41 a knowing one," and a alight
curving ol the corners of his mouth, that
showed his ability to enjoy, while his
whole demeanor made every acute ob
server .sure of his ability to perpetrate,
a joke.
I Now aii'l then, when his lips parted,
I and lie ran hi.* fingers through his hair
1 with a languid expression, it was evi
dent he was eager to he at work in his
vocation ? that of a practical joker I
'J lie other was a dapper young man,
although different in appearance, yet
with features which indicated that his
mind was well littcd to ho a successful
co-partner with his inatCf.and a pun, or
gravely delivered witticism was fre
quently worked of!" with an air of philos
ophy or unconcern, that gftvo+hiui at
once the credit of being a first rate wit.
?Supper on the table, the^c two Yan
kees were not dull as a couple general
ly will be at table, but made mirth and
laughter and v. it their companions,' *and
there was a " set out " lit for a princo
and hi-; associates.
'J he V ankccs ate and drank and were
right merry, when the old family clock !

Tho elder looked up at the old monitor j
before him, stuck his elbow on the table ,
and looked again steadily for a minute, !
and then laughed out heartily, awaken
ing the waiter, who was just dozing by
the window-Mil.
" What in tho name of Mounts are
you laughing at V* a^ked the dapper
Yankee, as he cast his eyes now over the
table, now over and around himself to
ascertain where the ucstot the joke was
concealed.
The elder winked slyly, and yawning
lazily, slowly niscd the forefinger of his j
right l?and, and applied it gracefully to
his nose. Tho dapper man understood
the hint.
"Oho! r understand ? no you don't]

The .servant left the room, and our
heroes iueliijiii<r themselves over the la

l?le, held a long conversation in a low
tone, when the elder of the two raised
his voice, and with an air of satisfac- !
lion, exclaimed ?

Then hoth cautiou.sly rose from their
chairs, and advancing to the clock, turn
ed (ho key of the door, and looked with
in, the elder, in a half inquiring, half
ilc.'ided manner raying ?
44 Won't it .'''
The waiter wjh on the Flairs, rt i?*l ,
tlicy returned to their seat* in a trice, !
as if nothing had happened ? bothseold- ?
ing the waiter, as lie entered, tor being '
so lazy on hi;8 errand.
Having heard the clock strike ono, I
they were shown to their bed?, where j
they talked in a subdued tone, and final- i
ly sunk to sleep. In the morning, they ?
were early up, and ordered their horse !
to be harnessed and brought to the door. I
Descending to tbe bar room, they asked
tor their bill, and with becoming promp
titude paid the amount due over to the
I bar keeper.
The elder perceiving the bind lord
through tlie window, placed bij arms
? upon l be bar, and in a serioii3 tone in
| quired of the barkeeper if lie would dis

The young man hesitated ? ho knew ;
I not what to ansv/er. The old clock
seemed to him such a miserable piece
1 of furniture, that lie Ji n< 1 i in j?ros.-? iot? that
! it might aj wvll be hi-? as l?is employ
ers, yet lie could not comprehend \v 1 1 y
sueh a person .should want .such a hide
j ous article. While he was attempting
' to reply, the jjood-ir.iturcd landlord en
I tcrcd, and the cptcation was referred to
! him for an answer.
I " I wish to purchase that old clock
| up stairs ! Will you sell it .'" asked the
. elder Yankee, while llio younger liu'ht*
j cd a ci^ar, and cast his eye over the
co'.uiniisol the .Sunday Morning News,
I which lay upon the table.
j The landlord, who had set no. great
value upon the clock, cxcept a.? an heir
loom, he^ait to suspect that it might
possess t li c virtues of Martin I ley wood's
chair, ami be filled with dollars; ami
almost involuntarily, the three aaended
to the room which cout :iiix*<l .
*' The fact is,"' ,<aid the Yankee, " 1
once won a hundred dollars with a clock
like that!"
"A hundred dollar.* !" f'jaculated the
landlord.

"You did! You couldn't walk it
out of inc. * I'll bet you lifty dollars I
can do it on the spot !'; .
" Done I" cried the Yankee.
" The clock struck eight, and with hi*
hack to the table and the door, the land
lord popped into a chair ? ?
" Mere she ^oci, there she goc.s !'! J
and his finder waved in a curve, hb'
eyes fully fixed ou the pendulum.

All was silent. The dapper man at
length exclaimed ?
" Shall L deposit tlio money in the
hands of the barkeeper V'
" Here she goe?, there &he goes !" was
the only answer. I
One of the Yankees left the rooin.
The landlonl heard hi tn go down stair*;

touching hi in upon the shoulder, asked ? "
"Mr. li , are you crazy ! What

The barkeeper rushed down Ma'raj
