Venezuelan Revolutionists Have Resumed Active Operations Against President Castro. FOUGHT A LIVELY ENGAGEMENT. Semi-Officially Announced that Block ade by the Allies Will Continue During Arbitration of Issues? Expresses Friendship for America. Willemstad. Island of Curacao, Dec. 29.?News has reached here from an authoritative source in Caracas that Vicente Gomez, first vice president of the republic, intends to carry out a bold strategic stroke against Presi dent Castro. General Zoalilo Vidal and five other leading supporters of General Matoa, who had sought refuge here, left the iBland of Curacao early Saturday morning in a sail boat, which took them in the direction of Cumarebo. near Coro, on the Venezuelan coast. The departure of these men is takeD as proof that the revolt against Presi dent Castro is again active. The Venezuelan revolutionists have resumed active, hostilities against President. Castro There occurred yesterday morning a lively engage ment between 1.200 revolutionists un der General Riera and government forces at Cauyarao. in the vicinity oi Coro. Details of the engagement are lacking^ but it is known here that the revolutionists had artillery. The gov ernment forces Were commanded by General Refereno Castillo. General Riera retained his position. The ar mistice between the government and the revolutionists has just expired. - Maracaibo Enters La Guaira. La Guaira, Dec. 29.?The Red "D" line steamer Maracaibo arrived here yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock and entered the port She landed her pas sengers and mails and received pas sengers and malls from La Guaira. Afterwards she left for Willemstad The British cruiser Charybdls passed thlg port Saturday, going In a westerly direction. She communlcat ed with the British cruiser Tribune. The Charybdis returned from the west | yesterday afternoon and continued In the direction of Trinidad. London, Dec. 29.?A dispatch to the Central News from Rome says it has been semi-ofilcially announced that under special agreements the block ade of the Venezuelan coast by the al lies will continue during the arbitra-; tlon of the Issues. Have No Animosity. Rome. Dec. 29.?It having been re ported that Commander William H. Reeder, of the United States training ship Hartford, said the Hartford would not come to an Italian port, fearing an unfavorable reception on account* of the unpleasant incident at Venice In connection with the visit of the of ficers of the United States cruiser Chicago last spring. The Associated Press has been requested officially to deny the existence of any animosity; towards the United States, either among the Italian people or on the part of the Italian government This lack of animosity, it Is pointed out is proved by the last Italian note on the Venezuelan matter, in which it was said that Italy had unlimited con fidence In President Roosevelt Tf American ships of war come to Italy; the Associated Press Is requested to say they will be heartily welcomed everywhere. Allies' Notes Transmitted, Washington, Dec. 29.?The Vene zuelan government is now In posses sion of the complete notes of Great Britain and Germany containing - the various reservations made by those governments before the decision was reached that the issues between Vene zuela and the European governments having claims against her should be referred to The Hague tribunal for arbitration. The.United States hav ing acted as an intermediary in the, steps leading up to the acceptance ?>* arbitration, now turns over the' Venezuelan government the formal, work of completing the basis for a, full hearing before The Hague. The" notes were transmitted to the Vene-1 zuelan government through Unitedi States Minister Bowen.'at Caracas. , There were no new features to the situation here yesterday. Officials are hopeful that the governments inter-; es-ted will work harmoniously and con scientiously to reach an early and final solution of .the trouble. The ad ministration is anxious that there; soon may be an amelioration of the blockade. It is certain this govern ment will use every effort to have the' flockado called off pending consider ation of the questions at Issue by The Hague tribunal for the double reason that its continuance Is always a men ace to peace and order and because of the harmful effects on American shipping to Venezuelan ports. Just what the allied governments have de termined upon in that regard it is "ttlf> flcult to spr. as Secretary Hay uni formly has refused to make public their reservations and demands as a preliminary to arbitration, feeling that such Information should come from the governments themselves.
