fOlSOiii.iTHEASHcj TVhit the Mt. Lebanon Shakers Found—Incident in the His tory of a Quiet Community. H The Mount Lebanon (New York) Shaken* are a quiet com munity, secluded from the fret and worry of the outside world. They are widely known, how ever, for their strict honor and probity in business. The Shakers believe that na ture has a remedy for every dis ease. A few have been found-— the rest are as yet unknown. Many were discovered by acci dent Others came to light as the result of patient experiment and reseaqfh. Nervous Dyspepra is a com paratively new disease, growing out of the conditions of modem life. It is a joint affection of the digestive organs and of the nervous system. These two were formerly treated as sepa rate ailments, and it was left for the clear-sighted Shakers to prove that the basis of this terrible and often fatal compli cation lies chiefly in the disord ered and depraved functions of digestion and nutrition. They reasoned thus:—“If we can in duce the stomach to do its work, and stimulate the excre tive organs to drive out of the body the poisonous waste mat ters which remain after thelife fiving elements of the food ave been absorbed, we shall have conn uered Nervous Dys pepsia and Nervous Exhaust ion. And they were right Knowing the infallible power of Shaker Extract (Seigel's Syrup) in less complicated though similar diseases, they resolved to test it fully in this. To leave no ground for doubt they prescribed the remedy in hundreds of cases which had been pronounced in curable—with perfect success in every instance where their directions as to living and diet were scrupulously followed. Nerve us Dyspepsia and Ex haustion is a peculiarly Ameri can disease. To a greater or less extent half the people of this country suffer from it— both sexes and all ages. In no country in the world are there so many insane asylums filled to overflowing, all resulting from this alarming disease. Its leading symptoms are these: Frequent or continual head ache ; a dull pain at the base of the brain; bad breath; nau seous eructations; the rising of sour and pungent fluids to the thruat; a sense of oppress ion ami faintness at the pit of the stomach; tlatuleuce; wake fulness and loss of deep; dis gust with food e\ *n when weak from the need of it; sticky or slimy matter on the teeth or in the mouth, especially on ris ing in the morning; furred and coated tongue; dull eyes; cold hands anil feet; constipation; dry or rough skin ; inability to fix the miud on any labor call ing for continuous attention; and oppressive and sad lore bodings and fears. All this terrible group Shaker Extract (Seigel’s Syrup) removes bv its pos itive, powerful, direct yet painless and gentle action upon the functions of digestion and assimilation. Those elements of the food that build up and strengthen the system are sent upon their mission, while all waste matters (the ashes of life’s tire) which unremoved, poison and kill, are expelled from the body through the bowels, kid neys and skin. The weak and prostrated nerves are quieted, toned and fed by the purified blood. As the result, health, with its enjoyments, blessings and power, returns to the suf ferer who had, perhaps, aband oned all hope of ever seeing another well day. SHIRTS! _ T. J. Irving & Co. T. J. IRVING A CO. , mch.l.V85—It- • 1 THE FIRST LOCOMOT.VS BELL. TofVJ Ayers* Victory Over the ObiUssIs Engineer—Fitting in a Cow-Bell. (New York Sun.] •Did you know Capfc Ayor-l” said a well known rail way man to a friend the other day. •Well, he was famous for two things. Ha was the conductor on the first through train on the Erie from tide-water to the great lakes, and he was the inventor of the bell rope by whieh brain men signal the engin eer. He was familiarly known as Poppy. Trains on the Erie, when Capt. Ayers was first employed, were few and far between. Passengers never thought of baying tickets, but paid farei on the train. In case a pas senger was obstreperous and refused to pay up, there was no way of stopping the train to eject him. and so people were frequently carried from one station to another without paying anything for it. •Poppy Ayers was running a train be tween Piermont and Turner’s, which was the western terminus of the road at the time. The engineer of the train was a big. burly German, who. like all engineers in th—M days, regarded himself as the master of the train, the conductor being simply a machine to taka (area. One day Poppy had been bothered more than umal on his train by stubborn passengers and he got to think Iing how he could establish communication between himself and the engineer while the train was in motion, and an idea struck him When be got to Turner’s he obtained , a section of clothes-line long enough to reach from the engine to the rear of the I train. He tied a stick of wood to one end . of the rope and fixed it in the en gineer’s cab, so that when he ran ! the rope back over the train and i pulled on it tho stick would be agitated. Then he explained to the engineer the idea, and told him whenever he saw the stick move up and down he must stop the train, for there would be some one on the train who ought to be thrown off. “This innovation was resisted by the engi neer as an infringement on his rights and the dignity of his office. It was virtually placing the train at the order of the con ductor—a thing that could not for a moment be tolerated. So when the train started he removed the stick of wcod that dangled near his bead and tied the rope fast Poppy Ayres persisted In tying the wood on the rope and the engineer persisted in ignor ing his authority, until one day Poppy, after ty ing the wood to the rope and bang ing it in the cab, turned to the engineer and, taking him by the throat, exclaimed: • *Now, you pig-headed idiot which will you do, let that stick alone and stop the train when I pull the rope, or will you take the d—deal licking you ever heard tell off “The engineer weakened and said he’d mind tho signal, and he did. Shortly after that Poppy fitted a cow-belt in the cab and threw out the rtick of wool. Whonover that cow-bell sounded the train was brought to a stand in short order, and some passea :er knew that he must either come down with hi* fare or get hustled out between sta tions regard lea of circumstances. At one t^ofce Poppy Ayres subordinated the en gineer to the conductor and increased the revenue of the company.” Lodgers and Their Virtues. [Cor. Brooklyn Eagle.] . A lodging house is an epitome of the world. All kinds of characters are to be found in it, who submit with different de grees of grace to tho evils attendant on be ing owned by a female ever on the ram page. The “fair” sox generally make very bad lodgers. They will not stand the filth and m position that men would. Tney insist on ;hs windows being cleaned at least twice a .-ear. They object to go to bed with more ;dan three pins and a needle for bedfellows. Foreigners, as a rule, aro bad to lodge. When a train leaves a platform or a te imboat a pier, all the lookers-on lift their tats to the departing i>assenger i, and bow o them, a compliment returned by tho revelers. If you address the poorest person u the street you must lift your hat. A gen Is man passing a lady on the stairs of a ho tel must do the same. [Atlanta Constitution.] 1 he French custom of taking a cup of strong coffee and a slice of bread early in the morning has never found favor in this country, except among the few who have tried it. Recently, however a distinguished physician has advised old people to take their coffee and a slice of toast before rising in the morning. Many old people are -roublod just after a wakening with a slight tremor, and the exertion of dressing makes them too faint to eat, All delicate parsons well find this slight refreshment in the morn ng, an hour or so before breakfast, of great benefit It will brighten them up and give them a feeling of mental and physical elas ticity that will enable thorn to go through the day without fatigue. If strong coffee is Go be used at all, the time for it is early hi the morning. Mexico’s Troubles. [Exchange.] Mexico has her financial troubles, out her oondition for years past has been far more prosperous and peaceful than during any period of her history. Since 1800 she has had 115 revolutions. From 1833 to 1861 Jnarex was the only president who served xit a full term. A CARD.
