cOlSOii iN THE ASHt j What the Mt. Lebanon Shakers Found—Incident in the His tory of a Quiet Community. The Mount Lehanon (New York) Shakers are a quiet com munity, secluded from the fret and worry of the outside world. They are widely known, how ever, for their strict honor and probity in business. The Shakers believe that na ture has a remedy for every dis ease. A few have been found-— the rest are as yet unknown. Many were discovered by acci dent. Others came to light as the result of patient experiment and research. Nervous Dyspepsia is a com paratively na1' disease, growing out of the conditions of modern life. It is a joint affection of the digestive organs and of the nervous sv.-tem. These two were form rly treated as sepa rate ailments, and it was left for the clear-sighted Shakers to prove that the basis of this terrible and often fatal compli cation lies chietly in the disord ered and depraved functions of digestion and nutrition. They reasoned thus:—“If we can in duce the stomach to do its work, and stimulate the excre tive organs to drive out of tho body the poisonous waste mat ters which remain after the life fiving elements of the food ave been absorbed, we shall have conquered Nervous Dys pepsia and Nervous Exhaust-1 ion. Aud they were rightj Knowing the infallible power of Shaker Extract (Seigel’s Syrup) iu less complicated though s i m i 1 a r diseases, they resolved to test it fully in this. To leave no ground for doubt they prescribed the remedy i . hundreds of cases which had been pronounced in curable—with perl et success in every instance where their directions :>s to living and diet were scrupulously followed. Nervous Dyspepsia and Ex haustion is a peculiarly Ameri can disease. To a greater or less extent half the people of this country suffer from it—• both sexes and till ages. In no ! country the world are there so many insane asylums tilled to overflowing, ail resulting from this alarming disease. Its leading symptoms are these: Frequeut oy continual head ache; a dull pain at the base of tho brain; nad breath; seous eructations; t>*e rigi‘ ot *mr and pui’r.ent fl^ds to the th»v>nt; ^ ^ of oppress ton an« t;i]ntuess :lt the pit of • stomach; flatulence; wake fulness aud loss of sleep; dis gust with food even when weak from the need of it; sticky or slimy matter on the teeth or in the mouth, especially on ris ing in the morning; furred and coated tongue; dull eyes; cold hands and" feet; constipation; dry or rough skin; inability to fix the mind on any labor call ins; for continuous attention; and oppressive and sad fore bodings mid fears. ' All this terrible group Shaker Extract (Seigels Syrup) “removes bv its pos itive, powerful, direct yet painless and gentle action upon the functions of digestion and assimilation. Those elements of the food that build up and strengthen the system are sent upon their mission, while all waste matters (the ashes of life’s fire) which nnremoved, poison and kill, arc expelled from the body through the bowels, kid neys and skin. The weak and prostrated nerves are quieted, toned and fed by *f lie purified blood. As the result, health, with its enjoyments, blessings and power, returns to the suf ferer who had, perhaps, aband oned all hope of ever seeing .-Mother well day. Probable Effect* of a European War—Of Advantage to America. If war breaks out it is inevitable that there must l>o a great fall. Russia by a great war would be almost inevitably rendered bank rupt, and a repudiation by Russia would in flict terrible la»vs, not only upon tho Russian people, but uj>on German and other investors. Then, a^aiu, the outbreak of a groat war would not improbably cause a panic upon the Berlin bourse, an.l possibly also upon that of Funs. Lastly, it is to be recollected that were n great war to break out the govern ments engaged in it would bo obliged to issue very large loans. If the war lasted long other loans would be issued in quick succes sion, tho national debts of Europe would in crease enormously, ami thus ouo of the great causes tending to raise prices would 1*5 stopped; the supply of securities would l>o immensely augmented all at once, while the growth of wealth would be checked. Wealth, of course, would continue to grow in the countries that avoided war, and also in the countries which themselves were not made the theatre of war, and which had not too large a proportion of their male popula tion in the field; but along with this growth of wealth there would also be a great d* struction of wealth. At the very time, ther<* fore, in which securities were being most rap idly manufactured there would bo a gr*at check to tb • growth of wealth. There must, inevitably, therefore, be a fall in prices; and if the war were protracted the fall might bo consuls 'ruble, and tie' recovery would bo long delayed. - There might b« an exception in favor of American railroad securities. Even in them there would bo a fall at first, but probably they woul l recover quickly—first, because a great war in Europe would increase tho de mand for American produce; secondly, be cause there would bo tendency to send capital out of the belligerent countries to the neutral countries for safe keeping and for invest ment; and, thirdly, because the population and wealth of tho United States themselves growing so rapidly that tho home demand for securities is vast, while American investors rarely iuvest their money in securities of foreign governments, and they would uot be likely to be tempted at a time when those foreign governments were exhausting their resources and ruining them prospects iu a ter rible way.—London Saturday Review.
