A Woman from Austria. Near the village ofXilhng* dorf, in Lower Austria, li* i Maria Haas, an intelligent aati industrious woman, w hose story of physical suffering ami final relief, as related by ln rnit, is of interest to En<rii'* women. “I was employed,” she says, “in the work of a ianre farm house. Overwork brought <011 sick headache, followed 1 / a deirthlv faintiug and sickm <s of the stomach, until I v*as unable to retain either food or drink. I was compelled to take to my bed for sev» r&L weeks, (letting a little letter from res; and quiet, I sought to do so,no work. but was soO!i taken with a pain in my shK which 'll a little while scenic to spread avel my whole bou\, and tl robl-ed in juv every limb. This was followed by a cough and shortness of breath, unt.l final-y I could not sew, and ! took to my bed for tin* second and, as 1 thought, tor the hist time. M\ friends told me that my time hadi nearly come, and that I could not live longci' thin when the trees put on their given once more. Then I happened to got one of the S gel pamphlets. I read it, and my dear mother bought me a bottle of Skujkl's Syrm\ (Shaker Extract of Loots) w hich I took exactly according to directions, and I lmd no: taken the whole of it before l felt a change for the U tter. ?dy lust illness l>egan June 3d, 1882, ami continued to August 9th, when I began to take the Syrup. Very soon I could do i little light work. The cou Ji left me, and I was no more troubled in breathing. Now I nm perfectly cured; and < !>, bow happy I am! I cannot ?xpress gratitude enough i r Seioei/s Sykpp (Shaker ivx tract of Loots). Now 1 mu : tell you that the doctors in oi.r district distributeil hand 1.-a i cautioning the people again t the medicine, telling them it would do no good, and imu / were thereby inHueneed to <: • stroy the Seigel pamphlets; ! ;t now*, * whenever one is to ! • found, it is kept like a rel:c. ihe i lew preserved are r« . rowed to rend, ami I .have lei. mine for six miles arouml our district. People have come eighteen miles to getmetobuv the medicine tor them, know ing that it cured me, and to be 9ure to get the right kind. I know a woman who was look ing like death, and who told them there was no help for her, that she had consulted several doctors, but none could help her.'*' 1 told her of Seigel’s Syrup, ami wrote the name down for her that sin* might make no mistake. Sin* took my advice and the Syrup, and now she is in perfect In alth, and the jnople around us are amazed. The medicine has made such progress in our neighborhood that people say they don't want the doctor any more, but they take the Syrup. Sufferers from gout who were confined to their beds ami could hardly move a finger have been cured by it There is a girl in our district who caught a void by going through some wat< and was in bed five wars with costiveness and rheumatic pains, and had to have an attendant to watch by her. There w as not a doctor in the surrounding district to whom her mother had not applied to relieve her child, bu* every one crossed themselves tod said they could not help her. \\ In-mver the little bell iwg, which is rung in our place when aiiyb* ’ v dead, we thought surely it w is t »i her; but Neigel's Syrup and PiHs (Shaker r.xtract of Roots) saved her life mid now she is as health;, as anybody. goes to church, and ran work even in the fields. Everybody was astonished when they saw her out, knowing how many years she had been in bed. To-day she adds her grati tude to min * for Goal's mercies and Seigel’a Syrup. Maria Haas. Mrs nitliy Heteruiincil to .tlbkc th» Howdwld HUN a* «s Possible. .Mrs. Bixby bectuic f*>finced the other d.iy that retrenchment was absolutely necessary in her household expenses. “Business is dull,” she said, “and I must make our bills as light as possible. Poor husband is quite worried over our affaire. Now. how can I rave $3 or $10 and show Mr. Bixby that women can bo economical if necessary? I know,’ sho said suddenly, in the joyful toue of ono who has 'had a happy thought. “I will do without the hat I intended getting to wear with my new gray suit. I can wear my black imported straw with it very well, aud I will, too. I just must learu to economize.” Then sho put on her hut aud went down town, so elated over her “clear saving of live whole dollars,” that she intended walking home with Mr. Bixby at noon and telliug him all about it. “I wogder now,” she sakl, as she stopped before the windows of a glove store, “I wonder if I couldn t afford a new pair of thuso uui kid gloves with stitchiu* on- the back. I really need , them, aud I 've saved $3 by going without my hat. so-yes, I’ll get them; they’ll | cost only $2.” Tea minutes later she stood before the ribbon counter in a dry good* store. ' "This i i':4xiii if really very cheap,” the was saying to herself, “and I need a lot of ribbon awfully. I wonder if I could af ford it today. Let me sec, I—oh, of I c< nrse 1 can, after saving $3on that hat.” And slu- bought ten yards of ribbon at • twenty-five cents a yard. I “Great side of embroidery,” she read on a daring placard a moment later. “Jo>t v hat I need,” site said, ‘‘but ! I've been d> Jug without because I wanted ' to ac nomize; but I'm sure Charles could n't say anything if I bought a little when I've saved live whole dollars.” So she Ixmght “a little” for $1.75. Then sho got “the greatest kind of a bar gain” in remnants of French gingham for , *1.30. “ I never would have nought it,' she I said to herself, "but it was so cheap, and thou I’d saved five dollars this morning.” Before reaching her husband's ofiicc with the cheering news of her economy she had bought four yards of lace, three df insertion, a pound of candy, two col lars and a pair of cuffs, a pair of slippers, two pairs of hose, handkerchiefs, three yards of lawn, a fan, a bunch of rosts, another pair of gloves, aud six linen handkerchiefs and two neckties for Mr. Bixby. Then she repaired to Bixby’s office tvith the tale of her economy, and ended by ; saying: "And here’s a few little things I thought I could afford after saving so much by I going without my hat. ” Bixby asked a few questions, made a rapid calculation, aud said in au utterly heartless tone; “See here, Sally, don't you economize guy mere. You'll break me sure if you ' do. You’ve got $10.98 worth of things already out of that $3, aud-” “You’re just too mean for anything. Charley Bixby !”—Detroit Free Press. Ike Pig In Hawaii. The pig is almost a fetich in Hawaii; he is credited with snjieraatural sagacity; is sacrificed as an offering of popular avail to Pole, when that unpleasant goddess be comes obstreperous; is accounted, when given by man to man, as the most delicate expression of friendship, and is the choicest expression of love ami fealty that the sub ject can offer his king. His linking is as solemnly considered aud carried out as any sacrificial rite. He is dispatched, with all possible tenderness, after a gen erous diet of "poi"; his incipient bristles rrc delicately removed, and his internal machinery dished up as a particularly agreeable conne bouehe; he is washed and cleaned and laid out white and innocent £< r the fire. A hole is then dug in tho ground and lined with glistening banana ami "ti" leaves; red hot stones are placed therein and others fill tho interior of tho p. ;. He is placed upon a layer of leaves, two or three pails of water are turned upon him, vegetables and seaweed are pa^ ked about him, tho earth is replaced and he is left to steam and bake until the . r .hi ".".hu" arrives. A physician who has studied “the small economies of life"’ tells hew the jellies which sonic bakers put into their tarts and jelly cakes urc made. No wonder grocers can sell them so cheaply. The directions are ns follows; Take four quarts of water and half a pound of alum; boil two minutes; add thirty-two |>ounds of sugar; boil five minutes longer; strain while it is warm (and the hotter it is the easier) through a coarse towel; when nearly cold, add two ounces of acetic acid and one-halt a pound of real currant jelly. When cool, pack it in tumblers and label with ti picture of a currant bush and a cl.;:1 picking currants. If you desire a v-nilla jelly, add in place of the currant jam four twenty-fivo cent bottles of the extract of vanilla, und stir in when nearly cold. If you desire strawberry jam, pre pare the alum and sugar as before, and add half a pint of the essence of straw ' erry; or. if lemon is desired, add essence j of lemon. Yon can make what you like with these proportions of alum and water. Tliis is the way to make the grocers’ jelly and the jam that is placed on tarts in the confectioneries and the bakeries.—Boston Herald. _ Three Years of Skimmed Milk.
