NEW YORK, S. V., June 20.— stock mar ket, generally speaking, presented an unusually I quiet appearance throughout the day. The trans- j actions aggregated 363,916 snares, against 23:?,09S j yesterday, but the increase was represented en- j tirely by more extensive trading In four stocks, ' namely, Sugar, Tennessee Coal and Iron and St. I Paul, in which the dealings footed up 155.000 shares, the first-named leading with Dearly SOOO shares. Not another stock on the list was traded into the extent of 6000 shares. After a tolerably firm opening, the market was subjected to consid erable pressure, the bears devoting particular at tention to suuiir, which, after a rise of % so 120%, sold down 10 IIS. On each and every ra'iy free offerings of the stock were made, and report hr.d it that a large ! holder had marketed about 15.000 shares. The I Btory lacked confirmation, but had its effect, never theless, for the stock closed within Yb of the lowest. ! Considering the heaviness of Sugar the general market held up remarkably 'well, except in one or ' two of the specialties. The losses were only Vi to | % per cent, the latter in Northern Pacific pre- I ferred, and this, too. despite the fact that local j operators derived little support from foreign | houses. New York. Susquehanna and Western preferred fell %to 295/ 8 , and while these; move ments were in progress a number of stocks devel oped considerable strength. Among the latter were Wheeling ana Lake Erie, St. Louis Southwestern, 1 0-12 Island Traction, New York and New Knelt* mi and Tennessee Coal ' and Iron, the last named gaining as much as 2% per cent. In the aiternoou the grangers and other leading stocks more tiai recovered in sympathy with an advance of %(Stl 8 ,8 per cent In the an thracite coalers under the leadership of Reading. Reports Were current that the return of J. Pier pont Morgan from • Europe will be followed by favorable developments, concerning the Reading: and Northern Pacifi* reorganization schemes, which 't is asserted will be vigorously fus'ied to a conclusion. .Speculation left off firm in tone, with mi advancing tendency. CHICAGO MARKETS. ' J CHICAGO, 1i.r... Jure 20.— news on wheat was circulated industriously . this : morning, but there was no stability to the market and little faith or trust placed in the gossip. Reports of delay to the Russian harvest by wot weather nnd talk of too much rain in the Northwest went unheeded. During the first half hour there was a rally from a weak opening, the rumor that /ifty-two loads were taken for export late yesterday bringing some orders to Duy, and snorts covering quite a little that they sold yesterday. The offerings became very liberal after a half cent recovery had been made, and the downward movement that started received no material check, until I%C had been Bobstra< ted from the price; Liverpool cables wore steady, bus lower. Tho Cincinnati Price Current estimated the winter wheat crop at 250,000,000 bushels and the spring wheat nt 175,000,000 bushels. Receipts were 21 cars for Chicago and 14 for the Northwest, With drawals from store were 23,717 busuel.s mid ex port clearances 348,877 bushels. Tlie latter mar ket was very nervous, with the crowd uncertain ana ready to take either side. Closing Enjr.ivi ca bles wore firmer. Continental markets were lower. July wheat opened from 711/ic to 72% c, sold be tween 72% c and 7lc, closing at 72:-! i/ c higher than yesterday. Estimated receipts «or to-morrow, 82 cars. I Corn did not succeed In retain firmness when j wheat exhibited decided we«tnea«. The receipts were light at eighty cars, but although this was a favorable argument it was hoc potent enough '" resist the depression that was in the surroundings. Withdrawals from store were 101,530 bushels and 108,614 bushels cleared at the seaboard. The Cin cinnati Price Current reported the. crop retarded.. but stated that rain would revive it. With the re covery. In wheat more strength was displayed by corn. / Jn!y corn opened at 490. sold between 49% <3;45%c, closing at 4914 c, unchanged from yester day. Estimated receipts for to-morrow 110 cars. OATS— The Cincinnati Price Current reported a deficiency in the total yield, .although stating rains had benefited crops in the West. Prices were affected by the weakness In wheat, but the under tone was firm, nnd recoveries were easily made. Receipts were 1 28 cars, and 150 are estimated for to-morrow. Withdrawals from store amounted to 03,400 bushels. July oats closed unchanged from yesterday. Flax was steady, cash, .$1 52: ember, Si 25; October. $1 24 \/->. Receipts were two cars.
