14 THE LABOR UNIONS. Cigar-Makem Assessed to Make Up Van Guelnen's Deficiency. Several months ago Geonre W. Van Guel pen, secretary and treasurer of the Ciear niakers 1 Union >*o. 223, skipped out with out formally resigning his position. In his hurry he failed to hand over to the union about $1150 of the union's funds, of Tvhich he was the custodian. It was a heavy blow to the union, but the members have rallied and have reorsrani/.ed on bet ter business principles, so that in the future it is not likely that such a thing will happen again. 15ut the loss of the money bore heavily ard the eigiir-niukers bepran to cast about for ways and means to replenish tneir treasury. Last- evening, at the meeting of the union, this matter was settled by levy ing an assessment of $3 per member. It was so arranged that the assessment will be paid on the installment plan of li") cents a week. By this means the deficiency i by Van Guelpen will be made up, lieved, by tlie first of January. Furniture-workers" Union No. 15 is pre paring t'< celebrate the eleventh anniver sary of its existence. It will hold a grand reunion and ball at 1159 Mission street next Saturday evening, and members of all labor unions are invited to be present. They will be furnished with complimen tary tickets of admission. Taxes Coining In Slowly. Up to yesterday noon the amount of taxes paid in to Collector Block was $035,000, as compared with $920,000 for the same period of last year. A long line of taxpayers ex tended down the main corridor of the Hail all day, however, and the money came in rap idly. Taxes will l>e delinquent on, Monday next, and many will hurry to get them in be fore that time arrives. The shortage in the amount collected is attributed to the uncer tainty as to the resuit of the test case nov." be fore the Supreme Court, many of the large property-owners and business concerns hold ing back in bopes that the decision will come before delinquent day. Cannot I'se I.iquiil Fuel. The Fire Department Committee of the Board of Supervisors refused yesterday to Krant General Warfleld, manager of the Cali fornia Hotel, permission to use liquid fuel in his caravans— on the ground that the dan ger would be too great. All the bids for the construction of an en gine-house at Ocean View were rejected, on the ground that they were excessive, tne low est being $5190. SAN FRANCISCO "CALL."
