What the Eepavement of Market Street Would Mean to Prop erty in this City, Real estate business has been rather quiet during the past week f.rom many cause?, the principal of which is the ab sence of many dealers from the City on their annual vacation. There seems to-be a strong undercurrent of opinion, how ever, that it will hot be long until a hap pier state of affairs may be expected. There can be no doubt that prosperity is returning, and there is every reason to believe that a marked change for the better will have taken place before fall trading actually begins. The only thing to be desired now is the passage of the tariff hill by the Senate. As soon as that measure becomes a law there is certain to be an industrial awakening that will start the wheels of commerce in ait branches of trade. • ...... The proposition to found a "Minion zoological park" is exciting considerable comment in commercial circles at this time, both pro and con. They believe that It would be the "acme of extravngance and folly." "San Francisco, with a population not probably exceeding 300,000 peopie," says iheir circular, "is better supplied with paries than any city of Jikesizein the world. We have Golden Gate : J*»rk of 1013 acres. There is also the whole Pre sidio reservation of 1480 acres,. which is maintained .by .Uncle Sam without a cent of expense to the City. Oar peop'e hare as fvill use of; the. reservation as though it were a part of the City. There is al-o Buena Vista Park of 3G acres, from which exceedingly fine panoramic views of trie bay and hills east, north and southward, are to be hadv In ad tition to this there is the Cliff House and Sutro Heights above it. If the taxpaj'ers were loaded 1 with money this Mission Park scheme would be an uiter worlt of supererogation ; but when H is rememb.-red that with nine people out of ten a dollar a day is as difflr cult to obtain as three or five were in the »ood times five or six years ago the out rage of such a project is fully seen." Among those reai estate men who take decided issue with this view of the siiua ton is Charles Campbell. Though he is in favor of the scheme as a general propo sition, he nevertheless believe* that the principal burden of the expense should fall upon the residents Of that section which will receive the largest benefit lrom the proposed park. ' : 'Land in ti.at direction 1* very cheap now/ he asserts, "much cheaper than it is likety to be not very lonu from this time, and the inhabitants are very anx ious to sell. As regards the" feasibility of the proposition, to my mind it admits of no doubt. We have parks in eyery part of the City but the Mission, and in justice to it nothing would be fairer than to give it fin equal show. As 1 said, however, the people of that part of the t'ity should be willing to pay the major portion of the expense." ■ • ■■• : . As a means of benefiting the City Campbell is heartily in favor of' starting the agitation for the re-, pavement of Market street at this particu lar time. In his opinion there is nothing that would haye a tendency to create: a more favorable opinion of the City in the minds oi the visitors than that their first sight of the principal thoroughfare should he that of a well- paved street and not a mass of cobbles. He believes that there pavement of Market street alone would have a strong tendency. to advance the price Oi real estate in tceiteral.
