12 DOCTORS WORK AS THEY TALK Dental Congress at the Clinics of Yesterday's Session. Eight Papers Read and Discussed in the Afternoon and Evening. Three Sessions Will Be Held To-Day, Concluding the Congress Pro gramme. The morning session of the Pacific Coast Dental College began promptly at 9 o'clock yesterday, and it consisted en tirely of clinics, both operative and me- chanical. The operatire clinics were by F. C. Prague on "Administration of Nitrous Oxide"; Clyde Payne. "Local Anesthe sia"; F. L. Piatt, "The Restoration of Contour With Amalgam"; Russell H. Cool, "Pyonhea Alveolaris"; W.A. Bry ant. "New Method of Making Retaininz band"; A. M. Barker of San Jose, "Bridge Work That Will Not Result in Gingivitis and Ultimate Lo-b of Piers"; S.E.Gil bert of Philadelphia, "Cataphoresis' ; Max Sichel, "Use ot Sichel's New Dental Alloy"; A. J. Litcbtield of Healdsbunr, Cal,," "Method of Fitting and Setting Lopan Crowns." _ The prosthetic clinics were by L. E. Custer of Dayton, Ohio, (a) "The Electric Oven for Continuous Gum Work" ; (6) 'Fusing Platinum"; I. W. Hays Jr. of Grass Valley, Cal., "Gold Crown"; C. E. Post, "Restoration of Cutting Edge of Central Incisor "With Porcelain"; L L. White, "Seamless Gold Crown." These clinics are the practical work of the congress, and the dentists are taking a great deal of interest in them. The op erations were watched with the closest at tention to the end, those of Drs. Cool, Payne and Piatt being the most interest ing of the operative clinics. Dr. L. L. White, in his mechanical clinic, pre sented some new methods, which called forth favorable comment. An hour of the afternoon session, which convened at 1 o'clock, was taken up in discussion of the operations seen at the morning session. The first paper was presented by Frank C. Payne, who had been assigned the sub ject, "Incidents of Office Practice." Then he changed to "Bad Habits," and enumer ated as some of tbe bad habits of a dentist the use of intoxicating liquors and cigar ettes, having untidy offices, not keeping himself neat and careless work. Drs. Corwin, Scott, Whitney. Love, 'league and Reed joined in the discussion. Dr. L. P. Leonard of Waseca. Minn., read a technical paper on "The Prepara tion, Measurement and Filling of Occlu°°a- Approximal Cavities." It called forth considerable discussion from Drs. Piatt, Goddard, Barber, Van Orden, Payne and Hoit. "The Application of Electric Railroad Current to Dental Use" was described by Dr. H. W. Moore of Santa Barbara. Drs. Custer and De Crow discussed the paper and described their apparatus. The pa per by Dr. Z. P. Parker of Santa Ciuz, on "Bleaching Devitalized Teeth with Pyro zone" was a description of his manner of performing the operation. Dr. Payne opened the discussion, and was followed by Drs. Moore, Merriam, Post, Goddard, Piatt. Whitney, O'Connell and Waite. The last paper of the afternoon was Dr. Clyde Payne's on "Evolution of the Gold Tooth-Crown." It was one fuli of data, tracing the gold crown from its first use in 1873 by Dr. John Beers of this City up to the present method oi Dr. L. L. White, also of San Francisco. "Dental Jurisprudence" was the title of the paper presented by Dr. F. H. Metcalf of Sacramento in the evening. Drs. God dard, Moore, Scott and Chance uiscussed the paper. Dr. C. L. Goddnrd illustrated his paper on "The Canine Tooth in Comparative Anatomy" with an exhibition of skulls and lantern slide. In replying 10 a ques tion from Dr. Chance as to what relation his paper had to the theory ot evolution, Dr. Goddard replied that evolution was, in his opinion, no theory, but an estab lished fact. "State Dental Laws — Efficient and Defi cient," by Dr. Edgar Palmer of Denver, concluded the evening's programme. After a discussion by Drs. Prague and Barber the congress adjourned. The members of the congress took din ner together last evening at the Bay State restaurant. It was an entirely informal affair for the purpose of the doctors be coming better acquainted socially, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The programme committee has so ar ranged the list of papers and clinics that they will all be completed in the three sessions to-day. Clinics will be tbe pro gramme for this morning, at which time, by special request, Dr. Russell Cool will give one on "Tbe Use of Silk Ligature." Papers this afternoon and evening will conclude the congress. At a special meeting of the trustees of the State Dental Association, heid just before the congress met last evening. Dr. William J. Young, was elected delegate to tbe International Medical convention at Moscow. The congress has been in vited by the faculty of the University of California Dental College to attend the commencement exercises of that college, which are to be held at Metropolitan Hall to-night. - " ■ The costliest crown is that worn by the Czar of Russia on ceremonial occa sions. It is surmounted by a cross formed of five magnificent diamonds, resting upon an immense uncut but polished ruby. The ruby rests on eleven large dia monds, which in turn rest on a mat of pearls. The coronet of the Empress is said to contain the most beautiful collec tion of diamonds ever massed together. SAN FRANCISCO "CALL."
